NEWCASTLE is in dire straits. There’s no hiding it.
A 62-0 thrashing at the hands of Cronulla on Sunday is the latest embarrassment in what has been a dismal season for the Hunter club.
So what’s the answer?
NRL 360 co-host Paul Kent says the Knights must avoid a knee-jerk reaction by lashing out and spending big money on an established star.
He would rather see the money invested in developing someone they can build a club around.
“I like what the Titans have done with a player like Ash Taylor,” Kent told NRL 360.
“They went after Cherry-Evans, couldn’t get him, so they said let’s fine a really good young kid coming through and let’s invest in him.”
Kent has identified one young talent the Knights could chase.
“A player like Kodi Nikorima, who is behind Andrew McCullough at the Broncos, and is probably going to be behind him for some time to come,” Kent said.
“Say to Kodi Nikorima come to our club, you’ll play first grade, and we’ll start to build a club around you.

“Taught the right lessons early he could be a mainstay of the Knights for a decade.”
Nikorima has been playing off the bench for Brisbane for the past two seasons and has already represented New Zealand at Test level.
He is off contract with the Broncos this year.

Pffff, somehow I don't think Nikorima will be leaving us to go to Newcastle. Play on the bench and win a premiership, or go to Newcastle and be the barer of all their burdens just like his brother was to the Roosters before they threw him back to reserve grade.

More like come to our club and we'll kill your career.

**** off Paul Kent.

Kngihts will be fine once they get rid of deadshit old footy players who try to run these business'.

Instead of waiting for someone else to develop a player and then steal them, develop your own. It might work for the Roosters, but that's because Uncle Nick has everyone in his back pocket.

At times I feel sorry for the Knights, a lot of things went against them during Wayne's time. But then I remember how the old boys wouldn't keep their grubby mits out of it, and wouldn't let Wayne do his thing, and they kind of deserve it.

They're right - they need to do exactly what the Titans are doing - scour the state leagues and the u20's. If there's a kid that's killing it but has his pathway blocked, sign him up. They only need to "break even" season wise before their bargaining power is a little bit stronger and they don't have to pay overs.

If anyone plays football manager, that's how they need to approach it. Get rid of all the old/underperforming guys on big money, replace them with hungry youngsters who can do the job for less, pinpoint a playmaker or two that can give you what you need and promise him a starting spot and give him assurances he will be given time to develop and will be provided some sort of protection from the coach etc.

I could see Nikorima moving to a club like the Knights. Presumably he wants to start in the NRL - something which he wont do here next year.

Has to be frustrating sitting on the bench for most of the game.

you are dead on the mark nashy, the knights are full of old muppets who run there own agenda.
s#%t stains like craig smith are a blight on the club and wont let go. they still carry this ridiculous stigma of no outsiders needed.. we all know how that is working for them!!!
kodi wont go there.. its career suicide.

Depends on your personality and goals

I would MUCH rather be on the bench of a successful (on and off the field) club than be a starter at a club in ruins

I am very confident of which career path would ultimately offer me the greatest opportunities, financially and otherwise

The only question is do you have the patience?

I'd like to think that the better ones consider it an apprenticeship. You have to do your time getting $5 an hour and sweeping floors when you start out. What better club to do it with than the Broncos. So much history, great players to work with and learn from. On top of that, learn your craft by being injected in to the game at the exact point your skill set can benefit most from.

Or, go to the Knights, and learn from... Mullen? The great Joey spends his time coaching the halves from rival clubs, he's no help. Jayden probably didn't make the worst choice going to the Roosters - they may be morally bankrupt but they have enough cash to support their players with the best resources money can buy. But still, learn from Pearce?

I wonder if Tariq Sims ever regrets his decision to leave the Cows and go to Newcastle. He has missed one premiership so far and his new club is a rabble.

And in a bit of a sliding doors moment, how well has it worked out for Tyrone Roberts getting the shaft from there. Appears to be much more upside at the Titans at the moment than Newie.

I love having Niko coming off the bench for us, but I wouldn't blame him one bit if he left. He's basically no chance at a starting spot with Brisbane. That said, going to Newcastle would be a bad move.

Roosters are stockpiling jnr halves, why not mention them?

I just love this prevailing attitude that it's a wonderful thing when Broncos players are in the sights of other clubs but it's a horrible shame when good young players get poached by the Broncos
