Trashy Rugby League Journalism 2017

"Maybe we don't need to be like AFL, we don't need to think strategic and long term." - Ben Ikin

To be fair, that's not a bad call. With the current administration anyway - most of them seem to display a complete inability to think anything, let alone strategic or long term. They're better off concentrating on keeping their jobs and making sure they haven't accidentally tied the shoelaces of both shoes together.

I think we have a winner for trashiest of the year

THE career of NRL star Bodene Thompson is at a crossroads after his messy group sex scandal with a former Penthouse model was exposed on Tuesday.
Sydney Penthouse model and stripper Belinda Medlyn told The Daily Telegraph she consented to group sex with the former Gold Coast, Wests Tigers and New Zealand Warriors star and his teammates.
The pair has a 15-month-old son Hendrix, who was conceived in 2015 while one of Thompson’s teammates watched on. Medlyn claims she did not use a condom when Hendrix was conceived at the insistence of the New Zealand Test international representative.
Their relationship has turned into an ugly dispute over finances to raise their child.
Medlyn claims Thompson has been late in making child support payments.
Thompson’s lawyer has said his client “doesn’t owe a cent”.
The story has once again raised concern over the culture of NRL clubs and their actions towards women.
Medlyn told The Daily Telegraph the NRL has a “pack mentality” culture which makes players believe they can get away with anything.
Channel 7 sports broadcaster Mel McLaughlin on Tuesday described the affair as “ugly” for the NRL.
“I don’t think you can have a crack at the governing body, the NRL, per se anymore. I think they do a lot,” McLaughlin told Sunrise on Channel 7.
“It has been an ongoing problem. It’s something for me I saw in school. The attitude, the untouchable attitude. But it’s a two-way street. This is messy. It’s a messy story, the whole thing.
“But I think the pack mentality isn’t great. It’s certainly not all players. All men do not feel that way about women, but we saw that’s a two-way street.
“It’s an ugly thing if you’re the NRL. You’d go, ‘What more can we do? We educate. They’re not children’.
“We have to educate them to respect them. How hard is it just to respect women? Don’t see them as objects, but the girls as well, and it’s not all girls, but let’s say these girls are actively involved in the texting and maybe enjoying it, you have to be accountable as well.”
3AW Radio commentator Justin Smith told Channel 7 he fears what really goes on behind the closed doors of NRL clubs if stories like Medlyn’s continue to be made public.
“It makes me absolutely sick,” he said.
“If that’s what comes to the surface and to the media, what the hell is going on in these locker room.”
The scandal is another blow to Thompson’s career with the 29-year-old yet to be given a contract for the 2018 NRL season.
Thompson missed the end of the Warriors’ season as a result of a torn pecs after his contract negotiations with the Warriors reportedly stalled earlier in the 2017 season.
However, a report on Tuesday claimed the scandal may not cost him his rugby league career.
New Zealand Herald journalist David Skipwith reported on Tuesday the NRL has been monitoring Thompson’s scandal and as yet have not found any grounds to take action against the out of contract star.
The report claims the NRL are continuing to investigate Thompson’s situation, but have found no evidence he has “brought the game into disrepute”.
The Warriors on Tuesday also released a statement to declare the club does not plan to take any action against Thompson, saying the scandal is a “personal matter” between Thompson and Medlyn.
“The Vodafone Warriors have confirmed they have been aware of a personal matter involving Bodene Thompson and an ex-partner,” the statement read.
“Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George said Thompson and his lawyer had kept them fully informed while the club had also notified the NRL Integrity Unit about the matter.
“George said Thompson had breached team protocol which had been dealt with. He said the club had received confirmation from Thompson’s lawyer that he was up to date with child support payments, which had also been verified by documentation from the Department of Human Services in Australia.
“George added it was a personal matter which was being handled by Thompson, his ex-partner and their respective lawyers.”
Medlyn told the Telegraph they would meet behind coaches’ backs at hotels and sent photos of friends to each other to consider for group sex.
Medlyn claims she met up with Thompson in team hotel rooms where they had sex before his NRL matches.
Steamy text messages the dancer and NRL star sent each other have been revealed by the Telegraph. In one of them, Thompson sends a photo of his teammate saying: “This guy is so keen to f*** you.”
Thompson first “met” Medlyn on social media. His Tigers teammates went to Townsville’s Santa Fe Gold strip club after a game against the Cowboys two seasons ago and although he wasn’t there, a dancer introduced the two on Instagram.
From there Medlyn and Thompson had sex at his Sydney apartment, her place at Coogee in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and hotel rooms.
Medlyn said the culture in the NRL makes players believe they can get away with anything.
“There’s a pack mentality among NRL players,” she told the Telegraph.
“They think they’re rock stars who can do what they want, until it goes wrong.”
Thompson is now in a relationship with New Zealand dance star Kaea Pearce.

It's a personal issue.

I'm obviously a lot more conservative than most on here so I think instances like the Bryce Cartwright thing (cheating on someone etc) is a bad look, but this is just a bunch of (supposedly) single people having some fun and living with the unforeseen consequences.

According to the first line of the article his career is at a crossroad...

I actually first saw it in the newspaper this morning. An ad on the front page about the NRL's sordid culture or something similar for a page 4-5 double spread. They are trying to make a huge deal out of it.

So he had a threesome, all consented, and like every single male who breaks up with his baby mummy, he's getting fucked over in court by her.

What's the issue?

I wouldn't do the Daily Telegraph or any Murdoch newspaper for that matter the honor of using them to wipe my ass after a good shit. End of story. No post script required. They're gutter trash on borrowed time.

Consensual group sex, how despicable.

Welcome to the NRL, the organisation where wife bashers are accepted and are 'redemption stories' and consensual group sex as abhorred.

Ever wiped your date with Newspaper bro? **** that. A more apt position to take, IMO, would be "I wouldn't do the Daily Telegraph or any Murdoch newspaper for that matter the honor of using them to wipe my BBQ's hotplate down"

So you have used newspaper to wipe your ass?

To purgatory with the bastard!

Nothing unforeseen about it. All part of the plan.

Can confirm it's no good for the job

You guys live a priveliged existence.

The key to using newspaper is to scrunch it repeatedly prior to application. Softens it up remarkably. It's no Sorbet 3 ply but it will get the job done.
