Wayne Bennett slams ‘hypocritical’ call by Cameron Smith and Craig Bellamy

Wayne Bennett has slammed rugby league players as “hypocrites” after it was revealed the players association want five day turnarounds abolished.

Following last night’s win over Brisbane, Storm leaders Cameron Smith and coach Craig Bellamy admonished the NRL for scheduling them three games in ten days on the eve of the finals.

They said the NRL should adopt the AFL model of a six day minimum turn around and the RLPA would make a formal request for it.


When told of Smith and Bellamy’s comments, Bennett said the players were using double standards.

“Players are being hypocritical too. We go through Origin then back up in two days and play in the toughest game they play,” he said.

“They want to be fair dinkum they will make changes there as well and that won’t happen.

“That is double standards and I hate double standards.

Does anyone expect anything less? Smith is a grub, coached by a grub, playing around grubs. They'll whinge and bitch to get what they want, and if they don't, they'll just create some bullshit new tackle to get an advantage.

Funny how grubs become Captains in this sport. Gallen, Ennis, Earbiter. Farrah. Even our own Hodges has a few dirty tricks. (I hate some of the things he does especially when it doesn't work and costs us possession).

That was a pretty weird direction that interview took. I'm not sure Wayne put enough thought into it and got his point across in the right way.

Speaking of grubs, i had to laugh in the game last night when the storm did sonething grubby and we got a penalty and Rabs says "Bellamy won't be happy with that". I think everyone has missed the point.......even WB.

The NRL game scheduling is a complete joke. Not only do we have a team backing up short, not once....not twice........but thrice, we have teams playing against each other two times within the space of 3 weeks.

How hard is it to play everyone once ........then play them again ??

Further evidence that David Smith's NRL has NFI of what they're doing.

I liked Bennetts comment about the scheduling though. If you want to rub it out and take scheduling away from the networks, expect to take a paycut along with it because they won't pay as much if they've got to show Raiders and Tigers on a Friday night.

that's the thing isn't it ... people want to take scheduling away from the networks ... but the aren't prepared to take the cut to the broadcast deal that would likely entail.

clubs have to decide whats more important ... scheduling or money
