i know our policy is breed not bought and look after our juniors SO i put together a side of bronco juniors with other clubs. You cant keep them all but this is a possible side from off the top of my head i have probably forgot a few..

1 ben barba
2 boyd
3 gagai
4 tate
5 beale
6 balin
7 cronk
8 kasiano
9 c.smith
10 leyroy lars
11 dave taylor
12 Tariq sims
13 Greg Eastwood

Is this a better side than what we have?

hows can you win premierships letting go all this talent.

What are we looking for in players to keep.

I rate that team better than the one that is going to take on the Dragons on Friday, I didn't know that Barba, Cronk and Kasiano are Broncos juniors?. Players that have full commitment to footy, a passion for the Broncos, well disciplened, have/show potential in their position and respect the Broncos culture should be the ones to keep.

Every other team has their dirty stinky paws in Brisbania, it looks bad because you pretty much count all other 15 sides as one.

It'd be a good effort to fit those blokes under the salary cap.

all players mentioned have all been on a broncos contract at some stage junior and /or senior

Just goes to show that we are still pretty good at identifying talent but you can't keep them all. You'd certainly have trouble fitting all the ex-broncos/juniors in the comp under the cap.

I agree...

a few things.

Boyd was never going to stay, hes a lost little puppy who would retire tomorrow if bennett did.
Gagai was let go for disciplinary reasons. He obviously didnt value his contract with the broncos enough to stay.
Tate was injury prone, almost career ending injury prone, and wanted to play centre but we had Hodges/Berrigan there.
Beale, eh, dont think hes that crash hot.
Ballin at 5/8th? we had Ennis as our hooker at the time, and he was going brilliantly. if he was on our books in 2005 or earlier then maybe we shouldve given him a go, but he didnt debut until 2007.
Taylor going was 100% bennetts doing. just wouldnt give him a game, and when he did he'd get 10 minutes on the field then drop him for another 8 weeks. who wouldnt be dirty at the club?
Sims was a package deal that we didnt want - it was sign Ashton AND Tariq or sign neither. Ashton had some great games, but far more mediocre ones.

I think our problem is we try and keep the WRONG ones sometimes.

You're looking at it wrong.

All teams are effected by juniors going to other clubs. The Broncos has (had) a 10 x advantage in recruitment over NSW sides, hence you being able to put together a very large list of Brisbane juniors who now play for other clubs.

In its hayday, the Broncos geographical juniors base was the same as that of 10 Sydney (including the Raiders) clubs.

Prior to the inclusion of the Broncos in the NSWRL, the cream of Qld playing talent went to Sydney. For a few glorious years (1988 until say 2000) that cream of Qld playing talent went to the Broncos.

Until the Cowboys, Storm and Titans entered the competition, the Broncos owned anything outside the borders of NSW.

Cue the 00's when NSW teams realised the depth of Qld Cup talent and started partnering with Q Cup teams (Raiders, Storm, Manly).

The Broncos now can't look back on the heady Cyril Connel days where you could just hold a state wide carnival, send Cyril out and get him to pick the best players for a contract.

The Broncos (and their fans) can't also just assume the nexy Darren Lockyer will come along in this generation to solve all our problems. Players like Corey Norman, Ben Hunt - very good rugby league players, would play first grade at any club (see Parra's big $$), but not the cornerstone of a dynasty like Langer/Lockyer.

With a level recruitment playing field the Broncos can't be expected to reach the heights of previous generations. The inevitablity of a second club in South East Qld corner will test the strength of the Broncos as well. The club needs to realise its fans rarely look beyond the petulant child glasses of "why we not win, I no support you now" and seek a more meaningful engagement with its fan base - the 25 year celebrations are a great start. But so would be petitioning Channel 9 to hold more Sunday games so we're a family club and not a corporate Friday night drinks club. Corporates will pull the sheet once the success dries up, loyal families who go for the experience together will still fork out their $100 a game plus yearly merchandise.

Hopefully the club still has enough "culture of success" capital banked to ride that into the next phase of the club and not make the mistakes of other golden era clubs that just thought the good times would keep rolling but have endured decades of - Souths, St George, Parramatta, even the Storm once the big 3 and Bellamy retire.

Back to the topic posed by the OP

Yes.

There are other market forces in play that prevented Brisbane from keeping a number of players mentioned in your team. Others (like Cronk) were not wanted by the Broncos and took their chances elsewhere and thrived.

What are we looking for in players to keep.

Great question. My view is we should have been building towards something off the back of our 2008 Toyota Cup side. The Hoffman, Norman, Hunt and Macca given control of the team from now on rather than persisting with Wallace at 7 and buying Prince would reap results in 3, 4 years.

I remember reading that Smith was never on a Broncos contract ... just because players have played in Brisbane doesn't mean they were on a Broncos players

I thought the story was that he and his parents were in discussions with the Broncos for a scholarship, but the Broncos declined.

Why not though.......I know Cyril is gone, but why hasn't someone else stepped up to the plate?

The same carnivals are still being played. We have six full time staff being paid to go and watch these games ......what the **** are they doing?

There's a lot of talk from ex-players about a cultural change, you mentioned cultural success. The likes of Pearl & Co are right, I think it has been eroding away behind the scenes for quite a while now.

We got rid of Cullen......who I blame the most. I like Paul White

who's next in line to be held responsible.

Andrew Gee.

Some of the decisions and missed chances really hurt. Smith and Cronk ....JT .....They say things like "well Smith was a skinny kid and he wanted to play half" We had a half at the time. (I think recently he just drove his car into a tree....on purpose

). Surely Cam Smith doesn't just turn into the player he is today over night. The talent should have been there for all to see.

Allowing Melbourne to use the Devils as their feeder club....worked out really well for Melbourne. Who let THAT happen ??

Eastwood going really pissed me off......

Reeks of Bruno Cullen.

Read a bit more about Cam Smith. Probably after the Broncos rejected him for a scholarship he played in an Under 17s carnival and missed out on the Queensland team. Anthony Griffin was at Norths Devils (Affiliated with Melbourne) and he liked what he saw, so he signed Smith to the Storm for $5000.

So Griffin CAN spot talent... what does he see in Norman that nobody else does?

Norman has plenty of talent, it's his attitude that needs readjustment, and his thought process too...

agree. also think norman has really been lacking confidence for quite a while.

he is definitely talented. i dont think we will ever see his potential at the broncos. who knows what will happen at the eels.
