CQ Capras Vs. Brisbane Broncos - YouTube

Game is joined in progress as Liam Pickersgill scores on the fringe for the Capras.

Brisbane hit back basically right away as the Capras allow the kick off to bounce over the dead ball line and concede a penalty. Cullen finds Kieran Duffin with a cut out pass and the Capras defence in the middle is exposed.

10-4 Broncos

Then Cullen cuts the Capras right up the middle, finds Greinke who turns it left to Taefu who is caught by Rhys Williams. On the next play, Cullen goes down the blind but Alick is deemed to have touched the sideline as he attempts to ground the ball.

The disappointment quickly fades as Hughie Stanley makes a meal out of it out at dummy half. It was one of those situations where a penalty could have been given, but Stanley's attempt to milk it was silly. Broncos with the scrum 15m out work their way to a backline play and Paia'Aua slices the Capras apart in heavy traffic to score.

14-4 Broncos

Brisbane repay the favour seemingly straight away as Adams (?) spills it deep inside his own half gifting Capras a set in prime field position. However, the Broncos defence holds resolute and Barba is able to return a fairly drab grubber back into the field of play.

Broncos make their way up field and Cullen attempts a 40/20 which goes close but the ball stops just before the line. However, Capras turn it over inside their own half. The break is short lived as Cullen drops the ball cold as he takes the quick tap and is looking very likely near the line.

Capras rebound with exactly what the doctor ordered a TRY. After working their way down the field, the Capras put one up the air, which Barba spills and Blake Wallace picks up and beats the cover defence to score a very timely four pointer just before half-time.

14-10 Broncos

To make matters worse, Brisbane compound the error by kicking out on the field. Capras with one more shot at the Broncos line but Sam Pierce knocks on just as the Capras were looking likely.

Half-Time

Brisbane off to a poor start, two spilled balls inside their own half from Lee & Paia'Aua respectively. Weight of possession tells on the Broncos as Duffin & Adams fail to take on prop John Clayton who CHARGES his way over the line.

16-14 Capras

With all the momentum, Capras make good ground and Pearson puts up a towering bomb, which Paul Barba does a good job of taking, but the cover defence tackles him in the in-goal. Goal line drop out and in a soft try, Gallen forces his way over from dummy half to extend the lead.

22-14 Capras

Capras are making ground with ease and in a moment of pure deja vu, five eigth Pearson puts up another towering bomb, but this time Barba is able to keep the ball in the field of play. Then out of no where, Sam Gee makes a BIG break through the middle, links up with Paia'Aua who throws a speculator of a pass to Jayden Nikorima to score a SENSATIONAL try right underneath the hay-diddle-diddle (Rugby League 2003 reference yo).

22-20 Capras

Off the back of a really good Rhys Williams kick return, the Capras surge deep into the Broncos half and cause a turn-over as one of the Broncos at the line spills a grubber from #1, but it can't be Stanley, perhaps it's Baker? Anyways, the weight of possession once again tells and Baker (?) sends Delapena over on the blindside.

28-20 Capras

From here, the Capras receive a couple of opportunities at the Broncos line but simple mistakes prevent them from icing this game. Brisbane are awarded a penalty and given a sniff at a comeback, but a Byrnes pass is picked off by former NYC Player Brent Williams who goes 60m to score and put the game to bed.

34-20 Capras

Capras make a mistake off the kick off and then concede a soft penalty which eventually bites them in the ass as Jayden Berrell borrows his way over from dummy half to add some respectibility to the scoreline.

34-24 Capras

Broncos try to roll the dice late in the game, but they run out of time and the Capras hold onto win a solid come from behind victory.

Well that was simple. Right up the middle and Capras scored. No one was going to stop that guy.

That was a nice no look pass to Nikorima. The halves combine to bring the score back to 22-20.

Central Capras 34 (Pickersgill, Wallace, Clayton, Gallen, Delapena, B. Williams tries) defeat Brisbane Broncos 24 (J. Nikorima 2, Duffin, Paia'Aua, Berrell tries; Barba 2/5 goals)

Bit of boys v men stuff in this game. It took awhile for the Capras to wake up, but once they did, they just played a better all-round brand of footy. They really took it to the boys with their defence and they were just able to make ground a lot easier than the boys.

For the Broncos, I thought Cullen was easily the stand out. Head and shoulders above the rest but he was taken off after the first half and the game seemingly swung with him off the field. I'll give brief thoughts on the others...

1. M. Barba - Pretty sure he was relegated to the wing after gifting Blake Wallace his try. Pretty much sums it up.

2. P. Byrnes -Kept getting him confused with Barba because I couldn't see the number on their back and they're both around the same size. I thought he was safe as a bank at the back, but his intercepted pass was the straw that broke the camel's back tonight. Didn't really offer a lot otherwise.

3. Taufu - Didn't offer much other than being easily taken by Williams

4. Tuttle - Similar deal, seemed like a bit of a turnstyle too in defence. Kept swinging his arm out.

5. Alick - Looked awkward on the wing. Seems a touch slow and doesn't really make any Vatuvei esque hit ups to counter that. Should develop as he puts on some size, but tonight wasn't a good performance for him.

6. Paia'Aua - Was sort of played out of the game, did score a pretty simple try and did well to set up J. Nikorima but otherwise, not his night.

7. J. Nikorima - Similar deal, except you noticed him everytime he touched the ball. Seemed a touch faster than everybody else on the field and his second try was an absolute beauty. He's got potential to be really special.

8. Ofahengaue - Did he even play? I don't think I ever saw him.

9. Cullen - Was dangerous everytime he touched the ball. Silly mistake aside, another quality showing by him. Just a shame his defence is so ordinary.

10. Hala - Did he even play?

11. Adams - Seemingly played the whole game. Was just okay I thought, highly involved but had his misgivings too.

12. Greinke - I just don't have a big wrap on him. He's an average fringe runner and more often than not he was dominated in the tackles which hurt our momentum.

13. Arrow - Was okay in his stints I thought.

14. Berrell - Thought he was a bit ordinary tbh. Threw a bad pass to begin proceedings and his only highlight was the determined borrow over try.

15. Lee - Actually wore 19, but I thought he made some good in-roads at hooker and looked as switched on as he usually does. Wasn't as good as Cullen, but I thought he was better than Berrell.

16. Gee - Was the most damaging forward we had on the field. Made a lot of strong charges, including one that set up the Nikorima try I've been crowing about. I think he'll be a cert for Round 1.

17. Duffin - Looks like Granville's brother with the hair. Played the workhorse role and played LONG minutes. Thought he was one of our better players.

18. Barr - He's a tall bugger but like Greinke, just didn't seem to offer a lot on the fringes.

How could they have led for over half the game and not one player played well?

You know it'd help both you and me if you actually read my post. I posted positives and gave certain players wraps, but based on what I saw (second quater on, as that's all that was there on the stream) it was a scrappy passage of the game by both teams.

Thanks for the write up BP. Top notch as always and is greatly appreciated

Didn't you read it? He said that Nikorima and Gee did well. BP marks them pretty hard but is almost always spot on, you should probably go through it again.

Sorry guys, read it and missed the Cullen bit. Definitely feel you're marking them hard. Would love to see your ratings for a NSW Cup game or even English Super League. I think you need to remember this definitely wasn't a first grade game.

I just call it as I see it.

As I saw it, it was a low quality game filled with a ton of fundamental errors which would have been crucified in first grade and proved costly tonight. By no means have I written this team off, I've just given honest feedback on what I saw as I hope it will be useful to other members.

I've got to admit, as a member and a mod, I'm tired of people knocking others for having an opinion they disagree with. How about instead of making the thread about that person's supposed agenda, you actually argue the points you disagree with or post your own thoughts on the match?

Would any of these guys be pushing for a first grade spot, depth or otherwise? It sounds like Cullen was a stand out at this level, but was out of his depth in 1st grade trials. Having not actually seen either game it hard to know.

My point was short but still brought up. The fact that it was pretty much an under 20s vs Qcup game between two average teams in both comps should allow you to be a little less harsh on your feedback. I did not just disagree with your opinion at all.

If both teams were average, then it's an even game, and more players should've stood up and made a name for themselves, it's not Pete's fault that not many did, I appreciate the honest evaluation of the game from him, much prefer compared to the Griffin evaluation.

Capras facebook page has the game on it. Doesn't work till the 4 minute mark though

I watched Cullen play in the cowboys trial. He looked pretty good in attack but couldn't handle it in defense. Fell off most tackles and allowed the cowboys huge metres up the middle

Yes but I don't watch Qcup and Under 20s and expect State of Origin quality.
