Jake Turpin Discussion

I can't think of ANY circumstance where Macca should return to the team. Sure, he racks up tons of tackles. Yet, in the bigger scheme of things, that seems to means dick. The few games we've been spoiled to have enjoyed without him were some of our best defensive efforts.

Seibold implying he's taking a break with his injury makes me nervous. He should've been shopped to a Japanese rugby club in return for a bucket of squid after the Dragons drubbing last season.

The circumstance is that his name is Andrew McCullough

On a (slightly) related note: great to see Niko falling on his feet - as some of us predicted - and having a hand in the Warriors final try to put the Dragons away. A good result all around.

I was at the game last night. I have to tell you the joy of seeing Boyd's try and the whole team come together to celebrate it was magic. The try was special for me as it was manufactured and executed by the 4 spine players. Turps, to Tommy boy, to Milf and the kick to Boyd. I know it's early days but to see the spine working together again gave me a sense of relief, that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

What worries me about all this uptalk about Turpin is that its symptomatic of the way we appraise players as fans. This week Turpin is the new lockyer. Next week he won't be able to do anything right. I watched it time and again. Wallace was first scapegoat to cop it. He fell foul to the new lockyer: Hunt. Then Hunt fell to Knik. Knik to Dearden. Now, Macca to Turpin.
Players give way to rising stars. This much is true. But at the expectation of some round here, they would struggle to see a season through, not as first graders but their careers.
Why must we continue to do this? Turpin had a good game, not a great one. He played against a team struggling to field any 13, let alone a strong one. They competed heroicly but lost because we played better, as a team. It wasn't for 80 minutes though and it wasn't without fault.
He is the first picked hooker for now, and if he plays for the remainder of the time he has until Macca gets back then: sure he will have earned that spot. What he doesn't need is any added pressure or expectation to be more than his role requires.
We shouldn't judge him or anyone else in the team by more than they can give to their role, but also as part of the team. What I found most positive about that whole game was the way players surrounded Boyd after the try. It showed not only that they looked up to him as their leader, but that they were together in doing so. It means we might see them gel as a group. No individual effort good or bad means as much as that.

Jake Turpin's energy and service out of dummy half was a contributing factor to us winning, but was he the reason we won?

No.

We would have won regardless. It wasn't even Turpin that got us back in the game, it was Glenn, Staggs and Milford. Glenn and Staggs' runs and Milford's is what got us back in the game and from then on we started running over the top of Manly.

It was only a matter of time until we started dominating them.

We did look better with Turpin at hooker, though.

Yeah well he hasn't proven shit yet.

It's easy to carve up weakened teams. Let's see how he goes against quality opposition.

Manly are still a Top 8 team.

We were a bottom of the table team, missing half our spine (Kodi and Macca) and our two leading point-scorers from last year (Isaako and Roberts). And we lost our most consistent player of the season in the 60th minute (Bird).

Yet Manly weren't able to carve us up.

I am vice versa, I still think Dearden is not ready. The other half we let go would have got at least a try or try assist(s) against Manly's shot defence. Cordner and Mitchell will be barrelling down his way all game, hope the kid steps up big time next week.
Not anymore

the quality of opposition is not an argument in my opinion. Macca has lost to Manly, he's lost to the Titans too... Turps has beaten them both and has a 100% win record. Does that mean Turps is a better hooker?

Even if he plays well for the next 5 or 6 rounds, I can't imagine McCullough's reign of terror ending yet.
No way in hell Macca gets back in if, and it's a massive if we win 5 of the 6 against good sides. As much as Macca is loved and respected by his team mates Seibold has no history with him other than Seibold watching a very poor and losing imitation of Cook. No matter what a doctor told me in those circumstances I'd be telling Macca you need more time to heal and then some time in ISC to get your fitness back. If Turpin keeps going well I don't see a scenario where McCullough rejoins. I'm not saying that's what Seibold will do, just my view.
