PLAYER Darius Boyd Discussion

You're a cockwomble. Although why you ask me to call you one again is beyond me. I'd guess you just want me to do it to throw your weight around, but I did as you asked anyway.

And I'm not saying people can't be critical of him. At times he deserves it ( and so do others ). But Why does there have to be such disrespect towards a bloke who has done a lot for this club. You can be critical without the disrespect.

Respect is a 2 way street.I could ask why is he disrespecting the fans by not having a go.

It's such a tough situation. If he wasn't captain I have no doubt he'd have been shifted to the centres or dropped entirely. But he is, so it's not a straightforward decision for Seibold. I suspect the feeling at the moment is that Boyd has earned the right to be given more latitude than the James Roberts of this world.

It's a tough call for Darius to make himself, as well. You want to go out on top and on your own terms, and I can imagine that he's hoping that there is some kind of miraculous reversal in form so that he can do just that. But I can't see that happening, so there's a tough decision coming for someone. I'd have a lot of respect for him if he put up his hand even just for a positional switch. Depth at fullback is a worry, but he's not the future so we might as well start trying out alternatives.

Seibold should have made someone else captain when he came in.

I really don't think he is, he is just shot as a fullback. He just can't do it anymore. Maybe he can't see it, who knows. I more than likely think I can still do things I can't, and it would happen to a lot of people. It's down to Seibold now to do something about it.

Will playing him in the centres solve anything? He will be targeted and carved up. He’ll concede 5 or 6 line breaks per game.

Possibly not, but I think he'd be a little less exposed there than as the last line of defense. But it would mean that he could retain the captaincy and provide some consistency, if that is the reason he is holding his spot.

Seibold should have made someone else captain when he came in.

Ideally, yes, but I can also see why he kept him. Also there weren't a ton of viable alternatives.

Like I just said, I don't mind the critisicm, it's the disrespect I can't stomach.

I said it elsewhere, but he is meeting all the markers the coach is setting down for him. If he feels he is doing what the coach is asking, whats he to do? I do think somebody needs to pull him aside and have a chat, but I'd say nobody is.

Nowhere have I been disrespectful. How is saying that he is past it at fullback disrespectful when his form shows exactly that. Fullback is one of the most important positions on the field and quite simply his body will not let him perform it. He no longer has the speed, agility or balance to perform at the level required.

He quite simply cannot be meeting the markers being set for him, and if he is we are in far more trouble as a club than we realise.

I didn't say you were, just in general there seems a lot of disrespect. I don't see the need for fake tribute posts.

I agree with all your points about him, I've said so myself. And he is meeting the markers Seibold is setting at training, or at least he was last time I heard a couple of weeks ago.

After the Rooster's game I began to think that Darius was coming back into form. After the Warriors game I thought his value as captain leading the young guys on was worth overlooking his shortcomings. I wanted to really believe that we could get by with him playing the way he was. I wanted to believe his form was improving and we had seen the last of his 'slip ups' After yesterday when he simply fell over at the thought of moving latterly to cut off Roberts it has become clear that his spot is just no longer tenable.

For the first time in thirty years I simply don't believe in the Broncos team with Boyd as captain and fullback.

They must be some very low markers.

I know the feeling, I've been following the Broncos since my father drove me up from country NSW to watch the Broncos play in their first ever match against Manly way back in 1988. And as a genuine supporter you have to be prepared to take the both the highs and the lows and accept that there will be days your just beaten by the better team. The team will also face times where they will be rebuilding and that means expectations will be different.

That said as a fan you can definitely be disappointed and critical when they just outright aren't putting in and when genuine changes need to be made. So far I have to say this so far this season ranks as one of the most disappointing seasons in my time as a broncos fan since 1988. Even in 1999 after such a glorious premiership win in 1998 when we were deadset struggling I still felt that side was genuinely putting in, eventually things turned around and they made a hell of an effort to make the finals even if they were flogged in the first round of it. Hell Alfie was so emotional as captain he didn't want to let the side down and ended up retiring, some would say he was taking the easy way out but that was the sort of bloke Alfie was, he didn't want to let anyone down.

It's time for Seibold to send the message to the team, especially those on the big paychecks. Shape up or ship out. I think you can start at the very least by dropping Boyd to the intrust cup.

And BTW I want to apologise for my over tendency of over defending Bennett in recent years, with hindsight and more willingness to have an open mind I can now see why people were critical of a number of the decisions he made after returning.

That pin dropped for me when he kept hobbling around for first half of 2018. Wayne kept picking him irrespective of his suspect hammies. Seriously, how long did it take others to realize. Think long and hard, when was the last time he broke multiple tackles to score a slashing try over 25m, (or even 15m for that matter) hardly ever.
35yr old Mick Gordon is more threatening at a third of Voyd's price.

I just cannot believe that he still thinks he’s up to it. Someone posted a gif of Ponting the other day - he’s a really good comparison to Boyd. Both were top tier in their primes, but they stayed around too long after either their eye or body betrayed them and almost ruined their legacies in the process. Boyd has done more damage to his reputation in my opinion because Ponting arguably stuck around because there was no one else to come in and he was still scoring big knocks on occasion: Boyd has just lost it and refuses to go.

Since there’s no real stats like in cricket where you could say “Ponting’s average has dropped from 56 to 51, he’s cooked” people will continue to defend Boyd.

Why is it down to Seibold?

He’s already made plenty of tough and somewhat unpopular decisions in less than half of his first season (that the most experienced coach ever couldn’t make no less); need he make another that may get some players noses out of joint because Boyd simply won’t do so himself?

Plenty of players have retired at the top, or very close to it, to avoid such a situation. They’ve taken the team first approach by removing the tough decision from the coaches hands.

Don’t get me wrong, Boyd has absolutely earned the right to be given time to prove he still has it, but surely that time expired long ago.

What I am trying to say is; you talk about disrespect but then go and lay the responsibility at the feet of a relative rookie coach whilst removing any and all responsibility from one of the most experienced players going around, a bloke who’s played close to (if not more than) 350 games at the highest level.

Seems like double standards to me.

Am in the same boat. Few of us are I think.

Yep, the modern day FB has to be one of your key strike weapons, not just a link man. It's why, apart from no one else being realistically available, I've been shilling for Folau on here, because he would be the key man in our side in terms of try scoring threats and he'd be involved in pretty much every single play. Imagine a player like Folau in the 20 around Milf and second phase play compared to Boyd.
