Where to From Here? Let's Plan for 2021

Briton Nikora might be on the outer at the Sharks, a NZ international would be a good signing for the 2nd row.
has been a bit off this year but on last years form for sure....but need a coach to bring out his best

i reckon Proctor a better buy at mkment for same money. the old lifeline.....

I reckon an English Super League side would perform to a higher standard than the 2020 Brisbane Broncos.

Fair but this thread is about 2021. Change the coach. Focus on defence plenty of positive things i think

I was implying that swapping the entire team with an English Super League team would be an improvement on what we've currently got.

Aside from the coaching situation, we have crap players all throughout our roster. The more I see, the more I am becoming convinced that we need a major player overhaul. A few players here and there would definitely help, but to really turn this mess around, we need to make some hard decision to create a competitive roster. That starts by getting rid of dead weight, and buying players who can do their job to an acceptable standard.

I would be thinking a spine of Bird, Milford, Dearden and Turpin for 2021. With Granville off the bench. Green on a 2 year contract.

Welch coming in to support Haas and Carrigan and Proctor
1. Bird
2. Kennar
3. Farnsworth
4 staggs
5 Isaako
6Milford
7 Dearden
8 Welch
9 turpin
10 Haas
11. Proctor
12 Teo
13 Carrigan
14 Riki
15 Flegler
16 Bullemor
17 Lodge
18 Coates
19 Oates
20 Hopoate
21 Croft

Paix

Fair enough. I respectfully disagree and honestly believe we have a decent roster. But we need some decent coachingto develop that. We would beat most SL teams at moment if played under SL rules

If I was in a position where I could get rid of anyone I'd like from the current team, the only players I would definitely keep would be Dearden, Staggs, Farnworth, Haas, Carrigan, and Coates. That's only 6 players out of a 30 man squad, and they've all played less than 50 NRL games. Out of the rest, I would possibly keep Flegler, Paix and probably Isaako since I value his goal kicking (keeping in mind Fifita and Pangai will not be at the club moving forward). Once again, these guys aren't experienced first graders. Besides them, I would happily get rid of everyone else for someone better. That is absolutely shocking, and it should give people an indication of how terrible our roster is.

Obviously I understand, this is not realistic, but still a pretty significant roster upgrade is required to get us competitive again. I'm not talking about getting superstars in every position. I'm talking about getting players who are reliable, professional and solid first graders. We need players who take pride in their performance and who can drive their high standards throughout the rest of the team, particularly to the younger guys.

The fact that our senior guys are some of the worst players in the team and are constantly getting shown up and carried by the 6 younger guys I mentioned is a disgrace.

we are paying large for Milf and Bird why subsidise another team. Both will be playing for contracts. make them earn it. Rather this than subsidise them to earn it elsewhere

Why so big on Coates i have seen nothing that justifieds the wraps

Are you suggesting we turf a 19 year old winger who has played 12 NRL games, and has scored 6 tries to date?

He's been one of the few shining lights to come out of this horrendous season. He has shown glimpses of what he can do once he matures physically. He is nowhere near his full potential as a player and I am willing to let him reach that.

At the moment, he is not physically strong enough and he is getting manhandled by the opposition defence quite often. Likewise, his defensive positioning and decision making needs work, but that is expected of someone so young and inexperienced.

Not really sure of the rationale behind your comment. Seems a bit strange and confusing.

not saying turf him. 3 of those were intercepts. Yes has talent but gee whiz has let plenty in. good in the air but not executing. He is a keeper but need nuruturing. not NRL standard at moment. Compared to Hammer Staines And orhers at same age

When Hancock Sailor Carne Faloua Tuiquiri etc came in as 19 year olds we never said the needed to mature they dominated They hit the ground running. Didnt let tries in dominated the opposition. This is my point. Coates may be good but I havent seen enough to say he is a mainstay. Yes persevere with the glimpses but not earth shattering. I sincerely hope he fulfills his obviois potential

EXTRA LONG POST WARNING

I've been thinking about this for a while, but this would be my plan moving forward:

Head Coach:

IMO, there isn't much quality from the available Aussie coaches so i would look to the ESL.

Assuming Seibs is sacked (most likely outcome):

Chase Shaun Wane. he has an impressive record in the ESL. current England coach, but who knows how long before international rugby league is back.

another potential option could be the Castleford coach, Darryl Powell. has a 64% winning record from a coaching career in England starting in 1996.

Assistant Coaches:

Regardless on if Seibs miraculously survives or gets axed, we should chase Kevvie Walters and Stephen Kearney. I don't think either makes a great head coach, but i do think both are excellent assistant coaches.

I'd also like to see Parker and Hodges around the group a fair bit.

Recruitment/Retention

1.
Cameron Smith would be my number 1 target, and i would pay to get him (even if that makes him the games highest paid player). not only could he add plenty on the field, but he would add plenty off the field. he would especially be a good mentor for the likes of Turpin and Paix.

Should Smith remain with the Storm, the we should chase Harry Grant or more realistically Brandon Smith

Should Smith retire, chase Brandon Smith, as Grant is a shoe in for the Storm hooking role

2. we need some experience in the forwards to go with our talented youth. I'd be looking at Jesse Bromwich (who has 2 years of those player options we all love) or Aidan Tolman. both would have a couple of years left in them and could add some value. Mitchell Aubusson could be another decent option.

3. We need another quality fullback or 5/8. not much on the market for 2021 though/ we could chase Drinkwater or Hughes for 2021 as fullback. so in the interim, i'd re-sign O'Sullivan to keep some depth and give us options/ Tristan Sailor could possibly be a good option

4. I'd also like to see if we could get Opacic back from the Cowboys. adds some depth to our outside backs

5. I'd try to offload Milford for 2021 instead of Bird for 2 reasons; he'd be an easier sell to other clubs (given Bird's injuries) and I think Bird could offer us more if we can keep him on the field.

6. I'd offer Te'o another budget contract; also Luke IF we don't sign another hooker.

7. I'd also try to move on Ofahengaue

Possible 2021 Team - if everything goes to plan

1. Sailor
2. Farnworth
3. Staggs
4. Opacic
5. Coates
6. Bird
7. Dearden
8. Bromwich
9. Cam Smith
10. Haas
11. Glenn
12. Te'o
13. Carrigan

14. Turpin
15. Flegler
16. Oates
17. Lodge
