Next Broncos coach

Who should it be?

Unfortunately, I think Green will get the gig.

He won't last long, his excuses for why he failed the Cowboys are thinner than budget toilet paper and won't hold up here when he inevitable makes us miss the finals for the next two years.

Whoever he ends up being, he has a massive job on his hands turning this rabble around. We have about 3 million dollars worth of cap that need to be shown the door.

Yeah that is why I think the next coach needs a minimum 3 year contract.
You can virtually write off next season as there will still be a heap of players on overs who are underperforming so that will only be a clean out year.
Then hopefully we can sign a couple of quality experienced guys and bring some rookies through in 2022. Maybe a chance for top 8 by then.
Going to be a long haul though. There are no short term fixes the biggest problem will be all the fuckwits on the board who don't have a clue, they will be lead in the saddlebags to fixing all this.
If we get the right person as CEO that will be a big help but absolutely no faith in the board to get this right. If they do it will just be a fluke.

Brave brave man to take on this job. 3 years ago it’s a job that every coach in the NRL would have wanted or at least considered. Now it’s like signing to coach the bulldogs.

I can’t see next year being much better in terms of pure wins and losses but what I want to see is games being a lot closer (not being beaten by 24+ points every week). At the moment it looks like the players just don’t care which is the part that hurts the most. I can handle losing but what I can’t handle is players not trying or giving up and continually being beaten by 5 or 6 tries a game.

I can actually see a move to the middle of the pack with a decent run free of injuries, buying a couple of leader type players - maybe a prop, back rower and centre, Isaako coming back with a new lease of life, and a coach that gets the team to pay to some structures.
Defence at this level is mostly attitude so that needs a lot of work but it can be done.
If the new coach can get Milford’s head back in the game, him and Deaden will be a decent combo.

I just wish the broncos could somehow move on from Wayne Bennett. Hopefully the next coach is successful

Walters got a little bit embarrassing during Origin, with the 'coach whisperer' thing, and seemingly forced and corny media appearances... with the not mentioning the oppositions team by name etc, bit cringey. Hopefully he'd be more straightforward and have a natural approach if coaching the broncos

Yes, get the coach whisperer.

I’ve changed my mind I think I would rather hook now I think to big a job for a rookie coach

I will say this people who use the argument 'you can't win a premiership with Anthony Griffin'. I think the next coach just needs to worry about rebuilding this team and getting this team playing competitive again. The question who can lead this team to a premiership will come in time. You need to crawl before you can walk.

It gets thrown up that Kevin Walters inherited a good situation from Mal Meninga when he became Queensland coach. The truth is Walters did appoint his own staff and made some key decisions to put his own signature when he got the job. This point seems to get lost on a lot of people. Ironically one of those assistants he appointed was Seibold. Gus Gould has said there are great assistant coaches who don't necessary make great head coaches.

He also doesn't get enough credit for retooling the Queensland side after the team lost game 1 in 2017 after the team was looking stale. The team went on to deliver Queensland another series win when maybe it shouldn't have. Which suggests rebuilding isn't completely foreign to him.

And about another 2mil already in the wallet, so the next coach will get a chance to add some players over the next 2 years which is a positive.

Quotes from one of the candidates ... Kevin Walters:

“I’m over everyone bagging the Broncos,” Queensland Origin coach Walters said.

“It’s breaking my heart.

“I go to Sydney for media work with Fox Sports and I listen to people in the streets making a mockery of the club.

“They are having a field day with the club I love.

“I don’t like seeing the Broncos become a laughing stock. It upsets me. This is not the club we are.”

“I would love to coach at the Broncos, absolutely,” he said.

“I have some contractual obligations with the Queensland Rugby League and I will be coaching State of Origin this November which I am totally committed to. I love the Origin job. I am contracted to the QRL next year but Bruce Hatcher (QRL chairman) has said he wouldn’t stand in my way.

“People have criticised my record (at Catalans). In the first year in France, we made a preliminary final and the second year we made a Challenge Cup semi.

“I then went to the Melbourne Storm as an assistant to Craig Bellamy and came back to the Broncos with Wayne (Bennett) in 2015. That year we made the grand final and were one tackle away from winning the premiership.

“I won premierships as a player and my time in coaching has been successful. I won the minor premiership at the Ipswich Jets, the first time the club has done it.

“I’ve also won two titles with the Queensland State of Origin team, so for anyone to question my ability as a coach is disappointing.”

“I can get the players back to their best form,” he said.

“Anthony Milford played his best football under Wayne and myself because we understood how to connect with him.

“I think I’m the answer to turn things around because I understand the Broncos, I understand the culture of the club and I am a winner. I have a history of winning premierships.

“I’m like any Broncos fan or club legend, we are all hurting. We need to get the club back on its feet.”

he has support from Justin Hodges:

“’Kevvie’ has worked under the greatest coaches in Wayne and Craig Bellamy so I think it’s his time,” Hodge said.

“He has kept working at it and it would be unbelievable to see him at the club where he deserves to be.

“Kevvie will bring the happiness back to Red Hill.

“The best part of football is the enjoyment and having fun with your mates and having that pride in your jersey.

“Having a guy like Kevvie is all about that. It’s time to give him a shot and hopefully he can bring it back to where the club needs to be.

“Every Broncos fan and supporter wants to see the club doing well again.”

Article in the CM about Bennett being open to a return.

No quotes from Bennett, it just sounds like Hodgey wants him back.

Hodges does make a lot of sense in that article. It could work very well.

Sentimentally, i would love Walters to not only get the job, but also be successful

Logically, I don't think he is the right choice. While Wane would be my first choice, I have been warming to the idea of hook. I think he is harshly thought of by fans. IMO, his biggest issue during his first stint with us was that he was overly loyal to the guys he had in his u20's team, and it seemed that he couldn't make the hard decisions as far as they are concerned. That won't be an issue this time around (and it seemed like he learned from that mistake at the Panthers)
