Pre-season

Dobbo on the radio this morning said Milf came back after Christmas 2kg lighter for the first time ever. Then went on to say reckons Macca will be starting this year and is Smokie for Captain

I cannot believe I am saying this but I do think Macca will be captain, he kind of has to be by default. Glenn is barely first grade standard now and could not pull the side together under adversity last year. Carrigan is the heir apparent but he isn't ready yet (sorry @Wolfie). Macca should not, nor ever be captain but here we are, he is the best (read only) option.

Funny though, the last three captains have all been rubbish:

1. Boyd - Barely first grade standard and went three seasons too long
2. Glenn - Was shopped around and seemingly proved to be unfit for the role
3. Macca - Punted on a loan deal because he wasn't wanted, comes back as captain

4. Carrigan - Will be there but not ready yet, no problem with him having taken on the reigns in the short-term
5. Milford - Marquee player who is just not a leader, never was and never will be
6. Croft - Haha yeah, this happened

These are the captaincy options for Brisbane...unless you go left field and you know what, now I am typing it...it might not be the worst idea (certainly a sad best option if it is) - John Asiata.

Walters told Foxsports.com.au that although Niu will spend a lot of time at right centre during pre-season he’ll likely see some games at fullback too.

“He’ll be training in the centres and a bit of fullback — he’ll probably be used in both of those positions. It’s good for his development to train in different positions,” Walters said.

“That’s what pre-season is all about, to get them familiar with their positions and different situations that they find themselves in, both in defence and attack.

“He’s a guy with great athletic ability, so we're very happy with his progress. Obviously he has a long way to go but very happy with what he’s been doing so far in our pre-season.”

“I feel he can be good in both positions. We see that with a lot of players where they can cover multiple positions and Tesi that style of player.

“Just for the moment we’re parking him in that right centre position — doesn’t mean he’s going to stay there — and we know he’s had some good games at fullback as well in the Intrust Super Cup. We’re happy to have him on board and we’re just working on those areas that he needs improving in.”

Just curious @Sproj in your list of possible candidates, 4-6, why there isn't 7. Matt Lodge?

Honestly, I am not entirely sure he will still be at the club and also, I don't think this club needs that kind of PR nightmare at this point in time. Harsh on Lodge? Probably but it is what it is.

....he needs a position to grow into, but given the absence of any credibility in terms of geniuine premiership challange this season, we should face the facts it will be a development year, particulary with such a young backline with no obvious strike players there...

I have to say there are some "quality" journos around this sport ... I just saw an interview on NRL.com with David Mead, and this is the question he was asked:

"Are you going to push for a regular spot?"

what did she think the answer was going to be ... "nah, i'm just here to make up the numbers"

seriously, lol

If you asked Kahu that question last year, that would have been his answer.

Was that Croft they cut away from as he struggled to finish his lift?
