THE COACH Kevin Walters

Every team in every sport in the world would have teammates who hate each other, it's non news.

Every job I worked I could name 5 ***** I couldn't stand the sight of.

Who's got all the players on instagram. I reckon it'd be pretty easy to pick up on the divide via there.

I actually think this is a positive in a way. If we won 13 games with the players hating each other, we can surely win a couple more if they like each other
I'll start. Adam Reynolds, Alex Glenn and Karmichael Hunt often make positive comments. Reynolds is thick with Oates.

Found two groups pretty quickly.

Patty, Kotoni, Keenan, Payne, Brendan, Reece, Deine
Billy, Herbie, Flegs, Kobe, Blake, Ezra, Cory Paix
Jordan Riki has his own thing going on.

The amount of denial around this place is pretty funny. Being a realist is like being a leper around here these days.

The club shit the bed entirely. We can all create our own theories around why that is or how hard it is to repair in time for next season but to pretend something didn’t go severely wrong mid season is naive.

Kev and Ikin obviously have some level of dispute. Some players obviously aren’t happy with either the club, Kev, or each other - at the very least Matterson was disliked by some and something annoyed Kev’s brother enough to leave. There are obvious flaws in team structures. Selections could be better.

I’m not death riding anyone, it just is what it is. Cant pretend every single story is a conspiracy against us.

we all know there is only one way to fit in on BHQ

and we all also know what the one way is.

Seen Keenan, Brendan and TMM out together one night in preseason actually, definitely 1 but likely 2 of them smoking as well ffs.

I get a strong sense that gamble was a big problem with the group. He seems like a likeable bloke, but I think his personality would wear thin pretty quickly too.

And to the people saying "you have people at every workplace you hate" of course you do, I do as well. They aren't working at fucking kmart or on a job site ffs, there are certain jobs that you need team spirit and to work together lol...

Keenan, Brendan and Patty share a house.

The team song during our win streak started out with everyone going bonkers like a team of champions. That enthusiasm slowly died out even with the later wins. Something happened amongst the playing group.

When did Payne ask for his release? That would definitely cause something within the playing group

There's a very long history of successful sports teams having players who hated each other. It's not uncommon.

Those players were able to put their differences aside for the team, but they still hated each other. And quite frankly, there's always going to be players that don't get along. That's just reality.

No way the boys would have put in the effort they did against the Raiders if they hated one another. That was as gutsy a win as you'll see this season.

I believe the Lewis reports, especially in light of the Kelly-Haas and Riki-Flegler dust-ups. I don't believe they were the reason why the Broncos form dipped so badly towards the end of the season. I believe cracks had formed after the loss to Melbourne and they weren't ever addressed. Kev constantly kept stressing the same thing over and over again yet nothing changed.

Mid season wins mean **** all really. As shown this year. Raiders were well below their peak that night

The Broncos have been weak through the middle for years...opposition coaches have always targeted use through the guts. It's a technical and tactical issue. Our defence has been diabolical for years. The dip in form is lack of mental toughness and shithouse defence. If anyone thinks it will change under kevvy, next season all the best.

But supposedly the boys hated each other at that point, you don't put in that type of effort for each other with all the chips stacked against you if that's the case.

It's neither here nor there, but I've lost track of the amount of premiers who trace their success to a mid-season win.

Reynolds:

“As long as we stick solid and follow Kevvie, in his direction, we will end up in a good spot. There is a lot of talk in the media about this and that but I love ‘Kevvie’ and I love Benny. The club is heading in a good direction. Everything is good. We are led by Kevvie and he’s a great leader. You need a bit of luck along the way to build a premiership-winning club."
“I was at Souths for 10 or 12 years and it’s not built overnight. It’s built on a long, hard journey. That’s what we’re trying to do here at the Broncos. We had that success many years ago here and it’s about trying to get back to that and sustaining it for a long time.”
“The last month was pretty disappointing. Aside from that it was a pretty successful season for us. The club is on the rebuild and trying to get to greater heights. It takes time to build for a premiership. We know that."
“In saying that, we put ourselves in a great position to do good things and we failed. It gives us a lot of hunger to move forward into next year. We need to be better, but there were positive signs and that’s the exciting thing about the club. The best teams are all good defensive teams. They don’t leak many points. That’s the area we need to be better at. The addition of Reece Walsh is going to help with the attack but that’s not the problem. It’s the defence at the moment."
“It’s a long pre-season and we need to have a good look at ourselves, see where we want to get to, where we want to be and who we want to be as a club. There’s no doubt we’ll be asking those questions in the first week of pre-season, addressing them and getting them right.”

Chris Johns:

“The criticism of Kevin Walters has been totally over the top. Ben Ikin has been given the head of football position and this is no disrespect to Ben at all, but his role has to only be one position in the football department. It’s not about giving Ben more of a say, it’s about providing support for the head coach and what Kevvie has done over the last 12 months is exactly the trajectory we need to go on. Now is not the time to say let’s give Ben Ikin more power, it’s time to say let’s build on what we did last year, do your jobs, and work together to win another premiership for the Broncos.”
"The season has been a pass mark and Kevvie should be given more credit for what he has done,” Johns said. At the start of the year, if you said Kevin will coach the Broncos to 13 wins, will everyone be happy? I think everyone at the Broncos, including the board, would have been ecstatic."
“This was Kevvie’s first proper season to start building properly with a CEO and football manager and it’s been a magnificent year. They have set some solid building blocks and foundations for the Broncos to go forward again."
“The key is they can’t go backwards now, they have to learn from it, go forward to the finals and push for a premiership. All the premiership teams have a strong bond between CEO, coach and football manager. I don’t think it’s a matter of Ben Ikin being a big part or a small part, he just needs to be one part in the Broncos machine. I just hope they get together and work out what’s got to be done for the benefit of the Broncos.”
“The talk about us putting pressure on the club is ridiculous. There is no way the Old Boys should have a say in how the club is run. We are prehistoric, we last pulled on the Broncos jumper 30 years ago. We have opinions on the club because we are passionate and we love the Broncos, but the club has to be run by Kevvie."
“The head coach lives and dies by his decisions, not a football manager or anyone else, so Kevvie is entitled to run his football program how he sees fit.”

Justin Hodges:

“I have seen a heap of change, you can’t say the Broncos haven’t improved as a club under Kevvie. They did fall away at the back end (this season), but they have made massive strides and missing the finals this year is something they can learn from and it should motivate them to be better. Reece Walsh will make a difference. The Broncos have a good spine with Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam and with Reece slotting in at fullback, they just need a consistent No. 9 and they will have a very good spine. There’s no reason the Broncos can’t play finals next season with Reece Walsh back at the club.”
