THE COACH Kevin Walters

Well it's obvious, but I'm glad Reyno is openly stating that our defence needs to improve dramatically if we want to improve. Kevvie recognised this towards the end of the season and mentioned it too in a number of his press conferences. Sadly though, nothing happened. In fact it actually got worse the more he highlighted it.

There needs to be a a massive overhaul of our defnsive structures and it needs to be drilled and drilled and drilled throughout the pre-season.

We're not doing anything worth getting excited about in the finals until such times as we become a TEAM that prides itself in dogged defence.

Get that sorted and then we'll be going places.

Kevvie has talked about nothing but defence since he arrived at the club. I don't think I've ever heard him even mention attack, and certainly never anything about wanting something specific from say, the dummy half. The aspect that impacts most on our attacking structures, and one he shitted around with aimlessly, while every observer commented on it.

Meanwhile, while we had a handful of impressive defensive efforts, our tries have largely been off the back of individual brilliance, like a Cobbo/Oates intercept. When we've had the opportunity to hammer a line, we've looked impotent.

Our gameplan in the middle of the season was about wearing the opposition down through maximum effort. As we began to face fitter teams, our own players bore the brunt of injuries sustained through being serial battering rams, and we settled into a more sustainable rhythm, we broke apart.

Reece Walsh will improve our attack, but he comes with issues of his own. One of these is wanting to be the centre of attention and call all the shots. It will be interesting to see how he relegates himself alongside Reynolds and Carrigan. Mind you, if the shots he's calling are marshalling our defence, that might be a good thing. We certainly need that.

What Kev did manage (for a while at least) was aiming up in defence. The effort was their first a period - some really brace efforts that won us games we probably didn’t have a right to win. This is massive and Kev and the plates deserve a wrap. The issue is the structures weren’t there.

Working your ass off becomes demoralising when you aren’t equiped with the skills and structures to be successful. This is the area they need to fix - they need to improve the defensive coaching because in patches the effort was definitely there.

There are some highly intelligent and highly coachable players in this team scattered enough for that to no longer be an excuse. Patty, Reynolds, Capewell, and apparently Herbie. That is basically every second player if you look at how they line up in defence. Walsh needs to focus purely on organising the defence and improving his tackling technique.

Not sure if this has already been discussed but surely we have reached out to Madge to come on board as an assistant. There talk the faiders will get him but living in Canberra or Brissy, theres no question there...
Also, Canberra will never get rid of Ricky, he’s a protected species down there so if Madge played his cards right, he may fall into a head coach roll at some point depending on how we go next year and beyond.

Kev isn’t going to bring on people who are a threat to his job. Wouldn’t even let Ikin into his tree house.

I don’t really think the assistants spot will be entirely left to Kev. Ikin and Dave will get just a big a say if not more for this one. He got his way before and he shit the bed.

that's DD's job to decide each person's responsibility ... so blame him if you must blame someone (assuming this feud is even a thing)

I’d like to think so but Ikin has apparently been frozen out and Dave isn’t even involved enough to define their roles

Do you throw darts at Billy walters head in your spare time? Better yet, do you stab little Billy voodoo dolls?

I think fans believe too much of what they read, especially in the media.
You mean the direct quotes from Kev, Tallis, and Dave? Or was Matterson being sacked, Walters brother quitting, Cobbo sitting out, dropping out of the 8, and Haas asking for a release all media lies?
