NEWS Proposed 20 team NRL Competition

It is a good question. It sounds like the NRL want it to be a bitza team, part here, part there. Part Pacific but mostly pseudo-Qld team. If they want to do this, whatever, just make sure there is a good business case for it. Because if you have a team playing home games all over the place, that make it hard to keep top talent eventually if you kind of become wandering nomads, that isn't going to appeal to a lot of top end players.

For 18-20 teams, I'd go:
18. Perth (no brainer)
19. Pacific (whether NZ2 or Qld5 or some mixture there of)
20. Adelaide

I would also be moving the worst performing Sydney team to the central coast or deleting them and bringing back the bears.
Yeah I don’t know the logistics of removing or moving a team but the tigers after 12 years of abject failure on and off the field have probably waived their right to an nrl license. As @Foordy said.

Dissolve them and let Perth have first dibs on their squad.
I also think new teams should get confirmed 2 years in advanced and the NRL should pay each player a %bonus outside the cap for new team / relocation rebate. To establish them.

10% of their contract value on top of their contract as an example. Along with a $200k marquee player bonus.

Otherwise you will be relying on Wayne Bennett to force fringe players to avoid the spoon each time a new club starts

As to overtaking the AFL, I just don't see how that happens... Still, it's great to have a goal and expansion, relocation out of Sydney should have happened faster many years ago.... better late than never though.
Haven't we already overtaken the AFL, at least in terms of vieweship? Pretty sure a lot more people watch NRL matches compared to AFL.

NRL has been ahead of AFL for viewership for at least a decade, if not more. They've always had better stadium attendance but NRL has always led pretty easily for TV ratings.

Which is why it's a crime that Vlandys the dodgy **** sold out to his buddy Rupert for way under market rate.

If Western Australia is such a hotbed of rugby league talent why hasn't it produced any NRL players? PNG and the Pacific Islands are able to scrape together a whole bunch of test teams - both league and union - and some of them are even competitive.
The path to get to NRL is on another planet harder compared to if the same player lived in NSW and QLD would be the biggest hurdle to that.

Their best clubs wouldn't even be playing at the same level as the East Coasts 4th or 5th tier, plus the East has to actually find them to bring them over, which is a big commitment because it wouldn't be professional either.

You put a club there and that completely changes.

I think if it's financially sustainable to do so it's in the games interest to go there if it can, you fail every hand you don't play.

I think Melbourne is a harder nut to crack than Perth would be imo, Lots of South Africans in Perth who have ties to a very similar game where the skills can transfer to our game.

I think the only Caveat I would give to that is AFL games are much longer so more opportunity to put ads in, but now the gap is growing and I doubt there is any difference if not favouring League in the last few years when you put that in.

NRL has the advantage in that QLD and NSW have more people than the rest of the country and the gap is growing.

You are correct.

I was brainwashed by how well Auskick does in the schools, seems like the AFL venture into Brisbane and Sydney has done much better than the NRL into Melbourne.

Seems like like to watch league but not play it.. makes sense.

They would play it at school if it's available, which is isn't, easier to sign up without winging mums stopping you lol, I remember when my School signed up for a Rugby 10s competition in high school in the late 2000s and we had nearly the same amount of people go for it as Soccer, soo many got turned away because there was too many and basically only a handful of people in my grade even played club footy.

It would of been even better if it was League.
