PRE-GAME [Round 6, 2025] Broncos vs. Roosters

Reynolds injury doesn’t seem too bad, but I think Hunt can handle it for a week or two (maybe Walters to 6, Mozer 14?).

We're running out of edge forwards...

This will test our depth.

I actually would love to see us take a risk and play Black but I think we will go Madden. So:

1. Walsh
2. Cobbo
3. Staggs
4. Shibasaki
5. Arthars
6. Hunt
7. Madden
8. Willison
9. Paix
10. Haas
11. Gosiewski (if his wrist is ok)
12. Carrigan
13. Hetherington

14. Walters
15. Jensen
16. Taupau/Te Kura
17. Hunt

Last year I would've agreed about Black, but since Hunt's arrival rushing in Reyno's understudy is no longer as urgent. I think he could do with some more time in Cup.

From what I've seen of Madge he prefers minimum disruption. If Reyno is out - I'm not sure he will be - I expect Madden will slot straight in. In a similar vein, shifting Billy to 6, Hunt to 7 and elevating Mozer or Smoothy would be the more disruptive option. Now is probably not the time to push the button on Mozer. That one should be permanent.

Second row is tough. Our cupboard is bare. Someone might have to makeshift.

Lots of potential talent on show in this afternoon's game: Black & Milford vs Madden; Mozer/Smoothy vs Bukowski; Te Kura, Taupau, Leota. Shame it's only televised on EmptyV.

I agree with everything you've said here and I know the Black pick won't happen and it is fair enough that it won't. I guess though if you ever want to take a risk with it, why not against a team that has Townsend and as Smith as it halves pairing, that's the definition of below average halves. At least we would still have Hunt and Walsh.

Agree that Madge seems the type that wants minimal disruption, which is fair considering the guys we have, so I'm expecting Madden to come in if Reynolds misses next week's game.

What would be interesting to me is whether Benny moves to the right?

It's his normal side, and is also the normal side for a right footed halfback, but it does become disruptive to both defensive edges.

I'd imagine we want Ben to be the halfback if Reynolds is out, including the kicking, so the logical thing is to move him to the right rather than have him playing halfback and doing all the kicking from the left.

The other alternative is Madden comes in and plays 7 on the right, including the kicking... that would be the least disruptive, but that just seems like the worst approach, because we should be wanting the ball in Benny's hands as much as possible.

I really like the idea of Walters to 6 and Mozer into the team... I think Billy can definitely do a job at 6 and then we get to bring Mozer into the team... but agree that might be a bit too disruptive and Mozer is coming back from an injury.

I'm against Billy at 6 proper. It's an 80 minute role that should be - along with 7 - the brain of the team. It's where you'd expect to find your best player. That's not Billy. He's in the team because of his talent stack, not because he's the best at any one position.

Billy can play 6 cover, where he can perform all the perfunctory duties of a 6 for ideally only a limited stint. If you notice, when he does cover the halves the ball doesn't tend to go his way; he has to go looking for it. Like last night, when it worked out pretty well for us when he chased after Selwyn.

In the absence of anyone better, I would retain Billy at 14, and elevate a specialist half. That's why we have them on the roster.

As for Mozer, let's see how he goes today. My hunch is he's a week or two away from joining the team. And that will be disruptive, as it will likely mean sending Billy back to Cup, something he's never had to suffer since joining the Broncos.

Yeah I’m not too keen on having Hunt switch sides, if Reyno was out long term I’d be down for the move but with Hunt defending with Gos I think the more time defending there the better.

Yeah and that's where the question becomes whether Ben can play halfback well enough from the left (mostly on the kicking side of things) or are you basically playing Madden at 7 over Ben, which I'm not a fan of, but I'm just not sure how well Hunt can kick from the left when he's having to do it for the whole game as the primary kicker.

I'm probably shifting Hunt across to the right and bringing Madden into the 6.

It's a little bit disruptive to the defence, but Ben has 300+ NRL games so I think he's probably the best placed to adjust game to game
