Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2025

The interesting thing about Madge is that he talked up Paix and Hetherington, and has gotten them putting in but he hasn’t actually re-signed either of them.

I wonder if it was a bit of a strategy to just get them working for it, while not actually improving their fates.

If you look at our off contract players, there’s actually the opportunity to reshape our squad quite a bit if Madge wants. A lot of cash can be freed up if you so choose.

Fletcher Baker, Selwyn Cobbo, Jack Gosiewski, Kobe Hetherington, Delouise Hoeter, Jaiyden Hunt, Corey Jensen, Israel Leota, Blake Mozer, Cory Paix, Adam Reynolds, Kotoni Staggs

Really, I’d be re-signing Mozer and maybe Reyno out of this bunch. The rest I’d be comparing with what is out there.
Jensen is really a no brainer if he's on the lower end of prop money as he's solid without being spectacular. Reyno on a reduced salary with the promise of a coaching role, Mozer has already been locked up. Cobbo is the next best pick but the rest are totally surplus money earners if they're over $300K. Staggs I rate as among our biggest earners who does not provide value for money.

Thought Mozer had signed for another 2 years.
These signing scoops really depends on which way the wind is blowing on a given day. Some days, we’ve extended Staggs while on some, we’ve extended Mozer but during some, we’ve signed both of them.

Just had to rely on Bronx social media to release the news for accuracy.

I for one hope that no one’s signed but mandated to prove their worth in the next 8-10 weeks.

I know that's an hilarious joke you like to roll out whenever someones uses the term but i think it's time to accept that 'taking a haircut' is a pretty broadly accepted term for financial loss.
I refuse to accept this! I guess it's my hill. It's just such a monumentally stupid term. Fortunately I am hearing it much less these days so I think it's on the way out, and I'm happy to take some credit for that. My hilarious jokes bringing about positive change.
Also, cheers for thinking it's hilarious

This is my view of the uncontracted players and in order of preference:
Re-Sign:
Mozer - Because apparently he's already locked up
Reynolds - On a reduced contract because I fear for us without him (I fear for us with him)
Cobbo - He's freakish and he is like our only back that actually makes any metres, we would be insane to let him go
Junt - Should be cheap and I dunno, I just like what he offers
Jensen - If he is a cheap wage only

Put On Hold:
Staggs - Look I'd love to keep him but he is nowhere near as versatile as Cobbo, he doesn't do the hard yards out of yardage which we need and for a player on his wage and age, he is way too inconsistent and if we need to shed a big name player, sorry Toes, you're it - not a priority re-signing
Leota - If he's cheap and I think he will be, he has massive potential but his handling is symptomatic of the whole club, I doubt anyone else is chasing him

Happy to Let Go:
Hetherington - I love his old school nature but he is undersized and doesn't have the motor to allow to work, he's keeping Patty out of his best position and just doesn't fold people enough in defense to make his starting spot work - something reportedly has to give in the salary cap and Kobe might be it
Paix - He doesn't want to seem to want to go anywhere else but unfortunately, his deficiencies are really showing - if he wants to stay for minimum wage or close to that's great, otherwise thanks but no thanks, we already have too many hookers
Gosiewski - If he is happy to take minimum wage keep him, if he wants a cent more - see you later

Fire into The Sun:
Baker - What a dud
Hoeter - Thanks, you've done yourself proud but its over
Taupau - Thanks, you had some nice moments but the game has gone past you sadly

Completely agree on Staggs.

It’s not even entirely his fault, the previous admin signed Mariner on a long deal, and Mariners best position is right centre. Does Staggs offer enough consistently to justify his and Mariner’s combined cost? I don’t believe so.

How much do we really lose if our 2026 backs are:

1. Walsh
2. Cobbo
3. Anderson/Shibasaki
4. Mariner
5. Arthars

And have 700k to use elsewhere?

Yep I think so too. If Staggs really wants to stay and we can afford him without losing Cobbo or Reynolds, he needs to transition into a second-rower.

Staggs does like to bully the smaller players - Has the speed to go well at 2nd Row, but how will he go consistently against bigger men.

I personally think he should transition as he becomes even more important to the team being able to play multiple positions. We have more moving pieces in the backs so would be able to accommodate his move well with the communication that he has time to transition -

Put Leota in the fire into the sun category already.

Sounds like the staggs deal is close anyway so no point discussing jettisoning him, he'll be here a few more years.

Probably would increase his chances in rep footy too as a second rower.
A bloke on the bench who can play backrow and centre well is pretty important. NSW had Cook fill in there a couple years back and it didn't turn out to well.
NSW and Australia has a long list of guys who can play centre probably a lot less guys who can cover both well.

You wouldn't, unless you were in the group.
Compared to Reyno's input and the way he guides the team around the field, Paddy's work rate and Haas' yards Staggs does nothing for the group mate.

There's more than what happens on the field when it comes to being a leader.

This. With our current injuries and suspensions in the backrow, he should be currently playing 11/12 while we have Mariner available to play right centre

I just don't see how he goes as a second rower. He has minimal workrate as a centre, how does that transfer to second row, where he'll have more to do. What kind of second row would he be? Definitely not a metre maker. A tackle bot? Not his strongest suit either. Maybe he could be like a Capewell. I just don't see it though.

If Staggs does choose to stay on the premises he remains in the centres, perhaps the option of transitioning Shibasaki into a second rower could be explored? If the Broncos website player profiles are to be believed he is 2cm taller and a kilo heavier than Staggs. Certainly has a frame that could fill out a bit if more muscle was required.

I would fashion him as something similar to what Capewell was and play him as 17. He would be able to cover Wing, Centre and Second Row when required, and put in a shift in the middle when not.
