Not going to lie kinda sick of this excuse getting parroted over and over. The guys we have now would struggle in qcup as well.
I can almost guarantee baker, paix, billy and kobe would look bang average in cup. At least someone like marty brings a hard edge at the very least. Not saying they should all be dropped, just an example.
Credit to Ezra, at least he looked out of place on the weekend and it's clear he doesn't belong there. The others above would probably fit right in.
Is there not a young fullback knocking down the door in Q Cup?
Cobbo ain’t it
The bye is a team no one wants to face.Well smash them and look good doing it. Everyone will be like "Were back! It's our year!!". Then lose to the bye, because that's the type of team we have.
I think backrow is one of the positions we shouldn't be chopping and changing week to week and in game, it throws everything out.I suspect a late switch between Willison and Piakura again... I'm just not sure how the minutes of Willison works if he starts on the edge.
The typical minutes would be Willson plays the opening 30mins and then Piakura comes on and plays out the game.
But Willison is also needed in the middle rotation... I wouldn't want him going into the middle after 30mins on an edge, because you lose some impact he brings from him already having some fatigue... so after 30mins Jensen and Baker would both be on for Payne and Kobe... and Piaks for Willison.
Patty doesn't come off until 50mins and that's to bring Payne back on.
So how do you get Willison back on the field if he starts and plays 30mins on the edge.
I'd assume he could play the backend of the second half instead of Kobe getting a second stint... but it just looks messy and these guys need their roles simplified as much as possible.
The preferred approach is going in assuming Piaks and Riki play the 80, and Willison plays a normal 40mins in the middle. If injury or HIA occurs then Willison shifts to the edge and other middles pick up his lost minutes in the rotation.
Or even if you want Piaks to play 50 and then Willison subs onto the edge after that, then Willison is getting about 20-30mins in the middle and finishing the game with 30mins on the edge.
Both of those rotations feel better and simpler than starting Willison on the edge and trying to figure out how to get impact from him in the middle as well
Because if h didn’t come in and make changes it would look like Kev could’ve just done the job so he had to put his stamp on the team - now he’s forced to commit to it or risk reverting back to the team Kev picked each week. In a sense proving that Kev had it right to begin with.Agree @theshed
My question (not just to you, but everybody) is why? Why can we all see the glaringly obvious, but Madge cannot?
I'm a mid 50s couch fan who's never played the game, Madge is a professional coach who has lived league his whole life, so I don't want to go the classic route of "well he must be an idiot"
He must be seeing something, or accounting for something, that we aren't - but what?
He's not even making any changes. Ezra is replacing the injured Ben Hunt.I sure hope Maguire doesn’t expect Ezra to fix his problems. The fact he isn’t making any changes besides Ezra is concerning (& that’s only cause Ben is injured).
He’s got dirt on him for sure.Is Kobe related to Madge?
That's sounds plausible until you look at the hooker rotation. He's copied Kevvie's system of burning two interchanges to bring Billy back in the dying moments. It sucked when Kevvie did it. It sucks when Madge does it.Because if h didn’t come in and make changes it would look like Kev could’ve just done the job so he had to put his stamp on the team - now he’s forced to commit to it or risk reverting back to the team Kev picked each week. In a sense proving that Kev had it right to begin with.
The thing that pisses me off about this squad is the 18-22.
I get it. Young guys shouldn't be seen as savoiurs or rewarded for poor form.in qld cup. Whatever. But that 18-22 isn't scaring anyone in the top 17 for their spots.yes mozer and te kura haven't been smashing the door down by all accounts but ffs jaiden hunt and smoothy aren't making ANYONE look over their shoulder, at least talent-wise.
It is the exact opposite of what I liked about maguires original teams. It DIScourages competition. This was also walters problem and he's just repeating history with this group of pea hearts who think their untouchable (and evidently are)
Problem is we tried that in 2020 and that didn’t turn out so good… Brisbane petrified of trying more than a few in a row now probablyWhether the reserves can do any better or not isn't really the point. The current blokes aren't good enough either and its one thing to talk competition for spots, it is another thing to actually feel it.
Take Bennett last week for example. They were down how many players? Yet he still dropped Tatola. THAT is what breeds real competition for spots and makes players improve their game.
I know a lot of you get sick of me talking about the Lions but last year, they were struggling majorly, like we are now, then they got injuries and so Fagan (the coach) was forced to play the kids. He openly said later he thought they weren't ready but then when they got their shot, it turned the entire season around. They went on to win the premiership.
Our players are dumb, they need extrinsic motivation - drop one or two blokes who aren't performing, deadset.
