A thing that shits me is our players are all too busy doing other things on the side and not focused on winning games. Reynolds is the most disappointing, deciding to launch his new brand after getting absolutely flogged and showing no heart or passion whatsoever where he’s trying to sell a 300 games t shirt for $90 a pop. **** me he’s a shit captain. **** him off to retirement.

Dud take. Do you think the players are skipping training or recovery sessions for these side projects? Are players going fishing, golfing and gaming in their free time not focused on winning?

I don't have any evidence but anecdotally I'd bet big money on the fact that players who place a great deal of importance and focus on maximising their own off-field 'brand' and trying to be a social media superstar perform worse than those that just focus on footy and enjoy whatever hobbies / off-field interests that don't involve trying to be an influencer.

Whether intentional or just subconsciously, are you going to run as hard and give as much effort if it increases the chance that you might injure yourself and be unable to participate in the photo shoot / live stream you have planned for the day after the game? Are you going to treat football with the passion and importance you need to if you're making money off the field being a little celebrity without taking a physical beating? I think whether they're aware of it or not, a lot of these types of players start seeing footy as just a tool to stay relevant so they can continue to push their off-field venture / profile - it becomes all business and they play at 90% effort instead of giving it everything. You can cruise and still make enough money and use first-grader status to grow the brand - it becomes the focus and footy becomes an afterthought.

get rid of all the hookers and sign jacob liddle please... then start culling the rest

I see your point to an extent but I don't have an issue with players having a presence elsewhere, I think it just becomes an optics thing on when and where to promote your brand. No one would really care if you were winning. It's tonedeaf AF to go yeah we suck on the field but don't you wanna buy my shit?

no we don't.

but we're the dinosaurs mate. it's for the kids.

Yeah fully expected to be called an out-of-touch old man, but I think the evidence is there.

To succeed at the top level of professional sport it needs to be your almost singular focus - you need to be passionate to the point of obsessive and it takes 100% commitment and willingness to sacrifice physically and mentally.

When your focus shifts off the field to cultivating a brand / presence / business which isn't footy I think it's easy for these players to just cruise through doing the bare minimum, viewing their off-field brand as the number one priority, and it shows on what they put out on the field.

Which of the new crop of elite players are also part time influencers / wannabe celebs? There's far too many talented young players who want to be influencers more than footy players who never live up to their potential for it to just be coincidence... Kalyn Ponga being the best example.

Agree with this. A few of the boys (Walshy, Kotoni, Mozer, and the softest runner of them all, Riki) had some veneers put in by Adore Dental in the off season.

Everyone deserves a nice smile, but getting your dental work done mid career when you're a contact sport athlete, FFS.

I want some hard hitters with f**ked mouths like Cam McInnes, Ray Stone, etc.

Edit: Patty, Madden, Payne, and BAKER!!! also had them done. I noticed Herbie too lol but he gets a pass because he's British so got lost in the dream of nice teeth.

I get this too but even the kids will turn on them if they don't start winning. If Walshy doesn't have an NRL premiership to his name in 5 years he's just Bevan French with a nicer face and won't be cool

Yeah you can live with some pretty boy show pony types in the backs, but that sort of behaviour in the forwards is criminal.

oh 100%, maybe why they're like make hay while you're the current flavour, the NRL world turns quickly.

Yep and at the moment they are throwing year after year of their career away, because they are happily accepting shit efforts from their team mates... OR putting in shit efforts themselves.

Flog themselves through a preseason just to piss the year away, because "coach too hard on us"... "coach too soft on us"... "coach too technical for us"... it's a piss weak playing group and a piss weak leadership group... has been that way since the 08 NYC team started coming through.

I don't care what the the players look like or do in their spare time as long as they are putting in 100% and winning games as they are paid to do. But **** me when they are dishing up dog shit week after week, then yeah, priorities need to be looked at as a whole.
