PLAYER Gehamat Shibasaki

What contract is Shiba under with us currently? I read earlier he is with us for next year already... is that correct?

Yes he's signed for next year already... see below... Madge also confirmed he is with us next year in his captain's run presser last week

Found the below tweet from earlier in the year, below is dated March 29, but it occurred in the preseason so he could play Round 1... can't see anything official from the broncos yet again... it's like the broncos just haven't been wanting to announce signings this year

It's strange because everyone keeps saying he isn't signed and is still on a development deal. He also said he is still on one. But he was obviously upgraded to top 30. Dobbo was trying "he is an origin player so obviously needs an upgrade" which Madge shutdown saying it was already done. The levels podcast was saying we will not be able to keep him after origin. I hope we have and can keep him, has become so valuable to our team.

Levels were more if he's off contract next year (ie no job as of November 1) then we wouldn't be able to keep him, because our cap was struggling as it is.

But 2027 Reyno and Bhunt will be gone... possibly Billy, etc. so the cap probably opens up a bit by then.

CBA is also due around that time so cap could explode and we might have a ton of money left.

Sydney has decided to ignore that he's got a top 30 contract next year already... doesnt help that NRL.com is completely useless at keeping their own contracts page up to date... Shiba isn't even on there and they didnt have Karapani's on there to start the year (I'm assuming he's on there now)

Also hasn't helped that broncos haven't ever formally announced that hes even on a development deal.

Yeah it's all a bit strange. Hopefully he shows loyalty and we don't offer a chicken sandwich.

But in all seriousness what do people think he is worth currently? My thoughts is 350-400k. Levels said 500k but you would think you need to see sustained performance for that.

Watch the media move on this but. It will be the talking point for sure. A perceived crack they can try and manipulate to destabilize us.

Gordo will go from saying clubs can't win when they get players on good deals to saying we are ripping of Shiba off with the insulting contract he is on haha

The reality is, he has had half a good season in 7 years.

He doesn’t get 400 to 500k off the back of that.

You give him $300k on 2 years. Upgrade him early if he keeps killing it for the rest of the year and next season. Old habits die hard, getting up for half a season or even a full season isn’t enough to guarantee his career has turned a corner.

NRL talking heads are so dumb they are missing the obvious player to go on about - Deine Mariner. His pathway to first grade is blocked due to the emergence of Gibasaki. Where are the articles about us should be letting him go because he is a gun and The wanted him etc?

I would give him 300k and include clauses that increase the value if he reaches certain targets and a certain number of games.

...about to be written thanks to you.

I'd look to increase his contract half way through next season.
As much as I like him this year players in the past have had a red hot season and then they drop off.
Add some bonuses to his current deal for this year and early next then look for a upgrade when you know for certain the form is here to stay.

I agree, and while it’s fun to play coach-retention officer, I actually almost feel disrespectful speculating about it like this because there’s no indication that Shiba is anything but wrapped with his current deal and keen to stick around.

450k. It's a reasonable amount for his current circumstances, Shiba seems like the kind of bloke who would see that as a big win, and he also gets to stay at the Broncs under Madge who has unlocked him.

Media saying he is 600-700,000 now and has to leave the Broncos because we couldn't afford cobbo lol.... they don't even know he is already signed for next year...

We didn't want to pay cobbo anymore, and deservedly so. Take away 150,000 (at least) for getting him in this position/coaching, giving him the chance/a tint bit of loyalty, and him knowing that being in brisbane at his 1st club with friends around brings out his best footy. Then add on that we have a dozen off contract and can prioritise him of we need to, and an extra year where we can upgrade him, and why the fuvk are we under huge cap pressure to keep him. Never mind we just had cobbo, tapau and smoothy, and more to follow AND Reynolds taking a pay cut. Why aren't the Bulldogs under cap pressure with all their new origin players? Or storm with new debutants every bloody year? Roosters with toia means they won't keep him or they'll lose someone else?

**** I hate the nrl media and their obvious bias towards us because we get more clicks then most of their clubs combined. Problem is, many juniors believe it and they milk us dry with the "help" of their player agents in their ear (often thinking solely about money, not the players career).

Nah.

"Broncos in crisis: Mariner out at sea"

(I reckon he'll be back on the wing by Round 1 2026, as Arthars' fall will continue)

It would not surprise me if another club swoops in with a big offer, such as the new Perth team.

Honestly, if it does happen I wouldn't blame Gem if he takes the bigger offer. He's 27 with a family, he doesn't have many years left, at the end of the day he's gotta think about his family and if that means he takes the bigger payday, then good on him.
