PLAYER Gehamat Shibasaki

It would not surprise me if another club swoops in with a big offer, such as the new Perth team.

Honestly, if it does happen I wouldn't blame Gem if he takes the bigger offer. He's 27 with a family, he doesn't have many years left, at the end of the day he's gotta think about his family and if that means he takes the bigger payday, then good on him.

Yeah you couldn’t blame him for sure. I wonder though if there might be post-football options open to him as a motivator, etc. He might be at a point where he doesn’t care so much about the money though either.

This sort of buy and improve is what the Storm have done every well, they buy your loyalty because you've rescued them like a puppy. I would be shocked if anyone even makes an approach to Shibasaki for 2027.

He'd be the perfect club employee after playing, he works as a youth worker getting students to school and providing direction. He'd be great with young Broncos.

I was going to say he was already lining himself up with a job after footy... if he sticks around he suddenly becomes a broncos ambassador or whatever for youth and pathways up in North Qld (if he wants to return up north).

"Gehamat loves the Broncos after the season he has had and is contracted to them for next season," his manager Wade Rushton told Wide World of Sports.

"But they haven't been able to make him an offer beyond that and so on November 1, I'm expecting quite a few clubs to show formal interest.

"He's had a fantastic year and is a great story - and he will keep working hard on his game."

Not sure how it can be a salary cap squeeze when we are offloading Cobbo (a wing/centre) to the The. More dramatic clickbait if you ask me.

Yea if it's not a salary cap thing, it's probably that we are taking a wait and see approach before offering him an extension. That might backfire though if his value keeps going up.

My guess is we're waiting to see if 2025 is the exception rather than the rule.

Remember he's been in the NRL for about 8 years at 4 clubs and this has been his only consistently good year.

If 2025 becomes the new rule them I have no doubt we'll look to lock him up early next season

Shibasaki is great but he was a journeymen who was so unfit he was sent home week 1.

I’m not saying he doesn’t completely deserve a pay bump - but you’d want a coaching and recruitment team who backs themselves to do it again if needed.

So Shiba’s value to Madge isn’t the same as his market value. He’s worth as much as Madge is willing to gamble that he can’t find another bargain to turn into a reliable first grader.

I think it's the player manager putting it out there that his client is available for offers as of November 1... he's just trying to put pressure on broncos to come to the table.

As has been said above, I think broncos will have the thought of... let's deal with it after the season is done.

I think our cap position opens up by the end of next year when guys like Reyno and Bhunt are out of contract and likely to retire.

Broncos have bigger fish to fry... namely the guys off contract as of Nov 1 this year (Kobe, Jensen, etc.) and also sorting out Payne who can sign elsewhere as of Nov 1.

After Payne is sorted out theyll have a better idea on their cap position heading into 2027

I think it's smart to wait. We have him in Top 30 next year. If he goes well again next year he gets a good deal from us and it is deserved and appropriate. If he drops form then we aren't burning cap cash. Worst case is he keeps his form (great for us) and another team poach him on bigger money than we can't afford.

This is what Melbourne do over and over. Often it means letting players go for better opportunities for squad balance. In this case we get two good years out of him and have to go back to the bargain bin for another player. One thing I would do is to up his salary when we get some savings along the way like the Taupau exit etc.

Yep seems like good management to me. That said, if he’s willing to to re-sign for 300k, do it. If he wants more, let’s wait and see.

As good as he’s been, we still have Mariner waiting in the wings and Verhoeven to come. We aren’t desperate like we have been in the past.

100% - just remember, 2023 Riki. One great year and then that drive fades or it's too hard to maintain the hard burn and they fizzle into ordinary again.

And that would be a big risk for a team other than broncos to take.

He was a broncos fan growing up and has good mates at the club, including the guy that convinced him to give it one last shot... and this year he has shown his peak self in a situation that was basically do or die for him.

If you take him out of that environment and give him a big pay day will he still have that drive... or will the pay day be a good enough end goal considering where he came from.

I could see cows being a good environment for him, but they've got young guys coming through and would they be willing to outbid the broncos to an extent that would see him leave.

23 Riki ?
He`s a better alround player this year . That race down and bully the full back act was more show than go .
I think he`s much better with the ball this year and hasn`t missed as many tackles .
I prefer 2025 Riki myself .

I don't think he has been that player in every game this year. Riki can produce the level needed. He just needs to do it consistently every game. The big caveat is that maybe he has been carrying a niggle we don't know about.

The playing injured card was fair about 3 seasons ago .
Now it`s just an excuse .

Might be worth going through some match threads early in the season where people were calling for him to be dropped. That we had two crap 2nd Rowers etc. He was starting to look like the last 2 years of Lexi, the second someone touched him, he was on the ground. He's definitely lifted as the season has gone on, but he's not found the offensive form he had in 2023 yet.

He has done more this season in attack than he has in years .
Dunno what happened , but some thing has clicked after the 1st few rounds .
