OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

It's bennet desperately trying to buy a comp before he retires/dies. All the talk of him being the best coach are surely fading now that he hasn't delivered a comp in 15 years
To be fair, in that time he did win an Origin series that at one point relied on a right flank of both Brenko AND Edrick Lee.

He's made several statements over the years that he wanted to stay with Brisbane until they won a premiership. He's done that now and, if they all stay healthy, will be in with a chance again this year. He probably thinks that it's time to move on to the next challenge.

His on field efforts have been amazing but he was never going to be the "face of the club". Reece and Patty have that locked up and all the the third party agreements that come with it. Perhaps he thinks that there's a better market for him in Sydney.

As much as he's done for the club, good on the Broncos for not being held ransom by his management. They have a great young squad and that extra money can now go towards securing and extending some of the young guns.

I think he will be a big loss. He is the best prop in the game. Hasn't even peaked yet.

However, I think we are better placed to deal with it than we were a few years ago. It's annoying it happened now when some other replacements are now off the market. Not sure there are any good replacements off contract.

But good luck to him. I don't begrudge him taking the money. It will give souths a very stacked pack.
He's 100% peaked. His body is starting to show the wear and tear of how much work he does on the field. I'm guessing he will become more and more likely to miss games over the remainder of his career.

It's hard to comprehend why he would leave now, we just won the comp.

Does he enjoy being the best player in a shit team? He's not that here anymore. He will be at Souths though. They've got some rep players but hardly anyone you can build a team around. Fifita's proven to be a hack. Latrell spends too much time on the sidelines, Cam Murray is an honest toiler. Cody Walker has to be thinking about hanging them up.

What's the go?
I think it must be family related. You have to remember both he and his partner are from Sydney. His daughter just started school so it could be that he wanted her to be at a school in Sydney instead. Also, we don’t know what rabbits have offered him (house, schooling etc). Also his mum is in jail in Sydney too. He must just believe he has done his time in Brisbane and wants to start fresh in Sydney, personally I think he deserves that. He has done amazing things for the club.

For his sake I hope you are wrong. Hope he doesn't go like Taumalolo.

the massive **** up for the club would have been increasing his offer over the $1.2 million a year because they panicked. they've done the smart thing here
we've lost possibly the best prop ever... who has been a monster and hasnt even entered his prime yet. you can cope as much as you want as you always do, but this is a monumental failure

Keep in mind, as good as Haas is, he was playing alongside the likes of Reynolds, Hunt, Maam, Walsh and Carrigan.
The calibre of players around him.have dropped significantly with this move, his opportunities will be fewer and further between and he will.have to carry a hell of a lot harder than he ever had to at the Broncos

Are you sure about his mum? The crash was in qld wasn’t it?

Thanks Payne you're you've always given us you're best but I won't miss the annual bullshit around extending you.
IMO the sum of all the other parts is more important than keeping Haas. He's priced himself out and we've done the right thing letting him go.
Souffs is an odd choice though. Can only assume it's based on cash and nothing else ( min 1.5), it's hard to see a lot of success in Souths immediate future.

Penrith let JFH go and at the time, he was being talked up as either the best prop in the game or one of them, they would have loved to keep him but they knew they couldn't, is he the reason they didn't make the GF? You could never say that with any confidence.

I think that's where we will be in the future. Absolutely would have loved to have kept him but he won't be the reason we don't feature in the finals.

Do we see the club going all out and trying to get him to stay before the cooling off period closes?
I get the feeling the club knew zero of this and his management outsmarted us. No leaks anywhere. I say it completely caught the club off guard. Seems like such an odd decision. Brissy is cheaper, his mates are here, he is settled (well, so we thought..) the club is a serious chance of continuing on the growth that we saw last year.
Imagine the $$ he would have earnt from life after footy in Brisbane too. Something just isn’t adding up. We aren’t going to find all the ins-and-outs but something tells me there is more in this story.
To think the club has their launch day tomorrow, and the team fly out to England, just adds more questions then answers at this stage imo.

I don't understand the thought process from Hass:

Just won a premiership;
Exciting things happening in the spine with Walsh, Mam, Pezet, Billy, and Mozer;
Good outside backs;
Decent forwards;
A coach that is getting the best out of them;
Hass family is around Brisbane, and well supported.

It just doesn't make sense to leave for a couple extra dollars that will be taxed at the highest rate.
