OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Drongo Dobbo is likely just fibbing for a night's worth of clicks coz he didn't get his article off in time yesterday.

I cant remember the last thing he got right?

He blocked me from commenting on his YouTube videos because I commented that he had a voice like a distressed pug with a loose epiglottis - so blocking me is probably the only thing he’s gotten right thus far

The thing I still cannot fathom +24hrs on is the reports around being offered 1.2m at Souffs and same 1.2m to stay with us.
We are so in a premiership window, and the core of this squad is locked down for the next few years. You can't tell me that Fifi and Latrell are the reasons. And with Payne's standards, those two aren't anywhere near him. Patty is his best mate, they have endured everything together. Souths spine is on par with our spine 4-6yrs ago. They won't do any damage at the pointy end of the season with this roster + Payne. Think back to when we were stacked in the forwards, we had stages but we had no 6 or 7 to steer us around the park. Enter Reyno.
The R360 clause may be the reason he is heading there but ffs still doesn't add up.
Certainly is the greatest fu that Wayne could conjure up.

Now that we have sat on this news for a day, I must say Im probably not as heartbroken as I was this time 24hrs ago. I think we will still be there, or there abouts in 2027. We will have some $ to upgrade and keep the majority of the squad together and also probably be able to attract a big name to the club in the process.

My only concern with this is, are we seeing Madge ask too much of the players already? Yeah we know we needed a hard edge, we know his methods got us to the promise land, but there is no harder trainer then Payne. It still doesn't add up that he is walking out on what we are building. Maybe he has seen a few things around the place that he isn't happy with. I keep thinking back to when he was talking about Coby Black right after we signed Pezet and just before he signed with the Raiders. Its unlike Payne to make much noise around players in the media, but it felt like he went out of his way to praise Coby and side with him sticking around in Brisbane and putting that 7 on his back. Literally a couple of days later the club released him to Canberra.

What I’ve pieced together today with chats-Payne’s management said last week we’d be keen, Souths met with his manager Friday and put forward their offer, Payne spent Saturday having a think and said yes Sunday.

This same guy has had to think long and hard about every deal at Brisbane but made up his mind in 24 hours for Souths.
Yep. Something dodgy there .

With the money thing, the journos posting these stories are maximising views and clicks.

Does writing that he has gone for 1.3m in 27 rising to 1.5m in 28 and 29 get as many subs and views as "Blow for Broncos as Payne snubs them for close to same pay at rival"?. No, it doesnt.

1.3m is close to 1.2m, so they aren't 'lying'.

I still think its more money and clauses, or same money plus R360 clauses. The end goal is still possibility of more money or guarantee of more money.

We won our premiership with him and I will be forever grateful for the role he played. But the reality is when it will come down to rating my best props in a Broncos jersey he will not be in it. He wouldn't have been even if he stayed.

8.Webke - 4 prems
10. Petro - 2 prems
13. Carrigan - 1 prem
Someone pointed out something to me today....

Replace haas with 2 origin standard props (same cost)...

Still win the 2025 premiership? Yes, all walsh

Still make the 2023 gf? Highly likely...

Have we won a spoon with him having a good year? Yes, player of the year 2020 i believe.

2 gfs, 2 underwhelming games... jfh + leota got him scared in the gf too...

I actually think he's leaving becuase walsh got all the credit (rightfully) for the premiership lol. I remember an interview post gf he did where I thought it was very obvious. Interviewer mentioned walsh and haas started downplaying his performance lol

On that, **** id love jfh or leota. Would save about 600,000. Here's to hoping warriors or panthers have salary cap issues this year....

Some people are in denial and rewriting history.

Webcke and Petero I can agree with if we're purely talking GF wins but on talent and capability they aren't a match for Haas. They've all said as much as well as Throrny, who played with both. I trust them over jobbers on this forum.

From the outside looking in there were reports awhile back about Haas agreeing to a 3yr deal.

After a couple months of nothing it was that he agreed to a 1yr deal.

He then signs a 3yr deal with Souths after 24hrs.

I'd say his manager already had the details of the 3yr deal.. all the money, etc. was sorted out from Haas' side, but the sticking point must've been the clauses.

The 1yr deal that was agreed seems like that was the only guaranteed year and there were get out clauses for the rest.

Souths get a heads up from the manager and all they have to do is agree that Payne could leave basically at any point.

Wayne doesnt really care... he could retire or leave at any point as well.

Souths would care a little, but they've just created a shit ton of momentum by getting a Haas that they didn't have 2 days ago.

Also once he's through the door you're at an advantage to keep him longer term.

It's similar to titans getting Fifita... they offered massive overs just to get him through the door.

Their hope was that he'd want to stay at GC, they could build around him and maybe the contract stays even or reduces through loyalty, but to get anywhere near that point they needed to get him through the door first

If haas backflips are we booing him or cheering?
Booing the **** outta him. He is done with Broncos as far as im concerned. I really hope we are not trying to counter offer on the back of this public display of bullshit. Haas gone sucks, but is not the end of the world and gives us some great options going forward.

My gut feeling is he's won his title, he's satisfied in that regard, but now he's been put through Madge's grueling pre-season again and has had enough. The desire isn't there anymore. He's got his ring, now he's off to join Fatrell and Fifita on easy street under soft touch Wayne so he can focus on his family and siblings.

I haven't seen them say that but that is ok. The guy is a freak and on pure talent would out do them. But I also witnessed these guys dominate from club through internationals. I may be a jobber on a forum but I don't rate just on the glitz. I haven't seen Payne dominate in anything above club level. No one is scared of him, he is an engine, a high work rate and a dominate runner. But I have never seen the bloke shot someone or intimidate anyone.

I would name the guys a named. I don't even lord Lazo, in fact I have more fond memories of Andrew Gee to be frank. Any way do you remember Jason Tomalolo, who was apparently the best, not any more and in the honest take department he will not be remembered as being the best. Either will Payne, especially if he goes to union.

Pretty damning to say he has no desire and wants to take it easy.

Many players you could level that at but I'm not sure about Payne.

There was a suggestion today from someone (not a broncos supporter) on another platform who supposedly heard from a source he trusts that the Haas deal is worth around $5.4 million across the three years..

Now $1.8 million / year sounds absurd but has there ever been a play from Haas and his management where more money wasn’t at the heart of it ?

He’lol be getting paid more at Souths than at Brisbane.. I’d bet good money on that
