NEWS Where there's a Willison there's a way through Broncos' crisis

With the Broncos so banged up that they had to request an NRL exemption to select players from outside their Top 30 for Friday's clash with the Bulldogs, former rugby union winger Xavier Willison has put his hand up to guide them through the crisis.

After starting at lock last week in place of the suspended Pat Carrigan, 23-year-old Willison will rise to the challenge again in Round 8 as a starter for just the 18th time in his 59-game career.

“I want to do the jersey proud – it has a lot of history so while I’m in it, I want to do my best in it," Willison told NRL.com

“I’d like to push for that starting position. If they can see me doing my job for the team, that will hopefully be in my future."

When Payne Haas exited the contest just before half-time last Saturday night with a knee injury, Willison merely put his foot firmer on the accelerator joined by Ben Talty, Jordan Riki and Jack Gosiewski.

Willison topped the Broncos in run metres (172), post-contact metres (68) and tackles (54). Throw in four tackle breaks and two offloads for good measure.

“That’s our main thing – next man up will do the job,” he said. “It starts with our prep during the week at training and getting that right.

“Everyone training well brings the standard up.”

When Haas went off, Willison, who stands at 205cm and weighs 123kg, let no negative thoughts creep in as he pushed through 72 minutes.

“I just thought, ‘OK, it’s my time’. I didn’t get panicked or anything. I just stayed calm and tried to keep producing under pressure I guess," he said.

“I don’t really mind – second row, lock – I just want to be out there. So anywhere in the middle basically."

That philosophy has earned him Maori All Stars selection and two Tests for the Kiwis, with that likely to be extended by New Zealand at this year’s World Cup.

It has also greatly impressed coach Michael Maguire.

“I’ve got players who are growing, like Xavier,” Maguire said. “He was excellent [against the Tigers]. He played plenty of time and obviously saw one of his good mates in Payno go to the sideline.

“He had to roll the sleeves up and spend more time out there. He’s one of the guys that doesn’t get talked about a lot but he’s someone who’s really telling in the team at the moment.”

Scouted by the Broncos and brought to Australia as a 15-year-old, Willison was enrolled at the fertile rugby league arena of Palm Beach-Currumbin High School on the Gold Coast.

He played for Norths, Wynnum Manly and Burleigh in Queensland Cup (2021-224), while also playing a handful of NRL games. He made his debut in Round 20, 2021, with a win over the Cowboys and scored his first NRL try the following week against the Knights.

Lock him in long term... he is our Payne replacement.

He's showing that he can be a workhorse, but he also shows some physicality in the middle as well.

Not enforcer type physicality, but I bet the opposition forwards are aware of when he's on the field through his tackles and hitups... absolutely ran over someone to create that missed opportunity for Buk.

I think he takes the starter spot this year with Jensen's health issues, but even beyond that Jensen has been a bit down this year, so I think it's time.

Hopefully Semu can work towards being Willison's replacement on the bench and we can still have that impact forward off the bench.

He needs to be our priority re-signing, it's that simple.

However, given Jensen's issues, we probably do need to sign another either journeyman prop or fringe up and comer.

I would love for those rumours we were in to Lahrs to be true. Otherwise, we might be in a bit of trouble. Yes we have some good kids coming through but this doesn't make for great reading:

Ins - Barnett (great pick up)
Outs - Haas, Te Kura, Jensen (depending on health)
Currently out of Contract - Junt, Gosiewski
Out of Contract November 1 - Willison, Talty

Currently available recruits according to Zero Tackle:

LOCK OFF CONTRACT

Nathan Brown, Adam Elliott, Kalani Going, Blake Hosking, Kit Laulilii, Liam Le Blanc, Kurt Mann, Cameron McInnes, Hohepa Puru, Hame Sele, Morgan Smithies, Ray Stone, Jack Todd, Jake Trbojevic, Dylan Walker

15 players off contract

PROP OFF CONTRACT

Tom Ale, Jake Clydsdale, Harrison Edwards, Emre Guler, Tuku Hau Tapuha, Jack Hetherington, Lipoi Hopoi, Samuel Hughes, Jaiyden Hunt, Jaimin Jolliffe, Tui Kamikamica, Sean Keppie, Kaiden Lahrs, Blake Lawrie, Jett Liu, Matthew Lodge, Ata Mariota, Toni Mataele, Francis Molo, Michael Molo, Josh Papalii, Vena Patuki-Case, Junior Paulo, Toby Rudolf, Daniel Suluka-Fifita, Siosiua Taukeiaho, Braden Uele, Leeroy Weatherall

28 players off contract

Out of these, I'd be interested in:
Lahrs, Guler, Edwards, Rudolf, Suluka-Fifita, Smithies and Uele

So it is critical we lock up Xman asap.

In that list Ata Mariota is one that should be getting a lot of attention. He's having a bit of a break out year in Canberra this year.

I think in general teams might start looking at the Ford type body shapes.

The game is becoming so fast that the middle guys might be moving towards guys that can defend laterally and can get through a ton of minutes.

Outside backs are doing a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to yardage, so you don't necessarily need your middles to be big guys that can roll through the middle... those guys could end up being liabilities if they can't get back the 10m with those quick ptb.

Every now and then you will find a specimen forward that is big and also has the big motor and can move laterally... we've got one in Willison so we need to lock him down.

But those guys will be expensive and you can build around them with more of the workhorse Jackson Ford types.

The market to look at might be the bigger workhorse second rowers.

A name like Kelma Tuilagi popped up around here the other day and there was no appetite for him on an edge (including myself), mainly because it looks like his defence probably can't hold up to lateral requirements out there anymore.... but if he's physical enough is he someone that can become the more modern day middle?

I'm not saying he is or he isnt, but if his physical traits match up to the modern day middle, then you can potentially grab him on a good deal before the market catches onto him.

Dogs did that with Tupouniua... everyone was like why did they buy an edge when they had Kiks and Preston already... then he was instantly converted into a middle.

Riki is a perfect option that we have in-house if we happen to find a stud backrower coming through.

Ford was an 80mins backrower coming through
Tupouniua was an edge at rorters, but he's become an impact middle for dogs
Ipap flip flops between prop and edge
The Couchman's I think were locks coming through?.. but theyre definitely undersized as far as traditional props go
Jack Williams flip flops between the two positions
KK is dominating at prop
Barnett was originally an edge/lock
Frizell is now a prop rather than backrow
