POST GAME [Round 9, 2026] - Broncos vs Roosters

And the relation of this to why we care about what other clubs and their fans think is?
You’re so close to getting it. He’s obviously a fan of the other clubs, and he's only here to find scoops for his buddies in the media.

I'm in the same boat as a few others here. I've made far more money on tipping comps than I've lost over the past 10 years - I've lost interest in league so much that this year I'm not even in a single tipping comp for the first time in as long as I can remember.

I couldn't be ****ed. I don't enjoy watching the game anymore, so I don't, so I don't know form lines and who's in or out, so I'm not going to be competitive in tipping.

Maybe the new viewers are taking over from the older guys like me. If that's where Vlandal wants to take the game, fine. But I grew up watching and loving the Broncos - I didn't play because I was 5'5 and 50kg when I finished school lol but I would have if I was even of average build.

What should ring the alarm bells though is that none of my 5 boys are interested in the footy. At all. Despite me being Broncos mad. Two have played for half a season and gave up. The others either aren't interested in sports at all, or want to play AFL. In regional QLD. But anyway, numbers are all up across the board (nothing to do with increased population of course) so it's all good.

I'd have thought you'd want to both keep the diehards as well as gather new fans, but what do I know. It legitimately upsets me because I loved the game. But in fairness I have said for a long time I love and support the Broncos, not the N(SW)RL generally, so I guess they don't care what I think either.

Same, my boy grew up with me watching the games week in week out, 2 years ago he followed the Eels (yes, I know, I've failed as father), he played league at school, went to the NRL after school League stars, now he just doesn't care for the game, doesn't watch, doesn't play.

I wonder if part of the increase in numbers associated with the game is also in part due to the girls/womens comps. Has male membership/participation declined or stagnated? I guess probably not, but it also wouldn't surprise if me it had.

The game is not in good long-term health IMO.

I know Twitter or X is the devils work around these parts but Gerard Daffy, who is @ReadingthePlay there and knows a bit about the game, posted this comment:

So here’s the elephant in the room. 🐘

Was told this week by someone who works in the tv media space that the drop off of viewers in the final 30 to 40 mins of #NRL telecasts each week now significant, and in some instances at alarming levels.

The blow out results and touch footy shit style of game turning people off, literally. All for one more try and tv commercial more on average than last yr.

Good... hopefully the tv ratings are being hurt by the ****ing garbage they're trying to peddle

But in the end all it will lead to is changing the kick off rule... I wonder how much damage will be done before they start walking back the stupid ****ing six again rule

The second part of that tweet:

Major concern for both media opps is that in many instances a game is a lead into a major revenue show (like news bulletin or Matt Johns Show, etc) and so they in now so many instances they also now getting big drop off numbers.

Getting 9 tries a game and a few more commercials won’t mean jack shit in the future if the second half of your coverage is in free fall and your audience lead ins to key network shows plummeting.

We’ve let the tv and NRL game execs break down the original, traditional fabric of the game.

He’s been making stuff up for a decade now. He’s probably guessed this one correctly which makes it 2/4745 in 10 years plus.

The 6pm Friday game is also intended to be Faux's lead in to keeping viewers for the 8pm Friday game.

Thursday also a lead in for the Thursday Matt Johns show... I'd imagine that show is getting hammered if the Thursday game blows out.

I will not be surprised if the refs now manage closer scorelines ... I mean they've always done this because the NRL has been peddling "closest comp evaaaa" for years at this point maybe even decades... but I wonder how obvious it will become now that the back pocket of the broadcasters is being affected.

The difference in officiating during games has been absolutely obvious this year. Pea blown out of the whistle in the first half and it gets put in the back pocket in the 2nd. Nearly every game.

Unless of course the non-favoured team is a bit uppity and needs to be put back in their place a-la Saturday night...

Well I’d rate him more reliable than any Newscorpse journo - which I know is not a high bar…

They won't though because this disastrous rule is Vlandal's baby. What about him suggests that he is going to admit he has got this sensationally wrong?

The only way it happens is if the idiot can find a fall guy for it. Hitler is basically teflon now because he has bought off the media, so no one is going to call this disaster out because they want his grubby kick backs to keep coming.

The fall guy can be Wayne Pearce... didnt he head up the Apollo thing around Covid which also brought in the new rules that have destroyed the game

lol ok so THIS is a sin bin and a week off thanks to being categorised as a Grade 2 thanks to the judiciary:

But none of this warrants anything beyond a penalty (and the flying head didn't even attract that):

Tell me again how Uncle Nick doesn't hold any sway in this game and it's all perfectly even and above board?

It's optics... NRL just tries to protect their brand... if someone is binned on the field they are basically forced to charge it with a Grade 2 otherwise they're saying the bunker got it wrong.

If the player doesn't get binned then they're not charging above Grade 1... because otherwise the bunker got it wrong.

If the NRL admits to the bunker getting it wrong then the media will tee off.... the bunker makes howlers in every single game... the NRL is just running protection for them to avoid highlighting it. Same reason Analsley doesn't front up on Mondays anymore.

If the NRL goes outside these rules then you probably just have to look at which team it affects, because it's likely agendas are at play... or whichever way the media has set the narrative.
