THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

Karapani, Anderson, Arthars, Duffy, Jensen, Hoeter, Rogers...

The list goes on and on.

Otherwise it's all a bit vague.

'Players aren't playing to their value!'

Ok, well I think the players should simply score more points and concede less points. They should also avoid injuries and giving away penalties.

Oh and above all else win.

It doesn't really get to the how or why.

Sure, I think you can be critical of how imbalanced the roster is and how they ought to have signed a backrow specialist. However lord knows who was even available.

Its not the guys on cheaper contracts that we arent getting the value from, its the players like Paix, Walsh, Mam, Staggs, Ben Hunt, Reynolds, Piakura ( even though i feel Piakura plays decent enough when he is on the field ). I'd even argue that the likes of Rogers and Hoeter dont really offer us much in depth.

The other question is though why is our squad so imbalanced, and i think its because we have a squad that relies too much on Reece Walsh having a run of form like he did at the end of last year and having Carrigan and Haas setting the platform by being run into the ground.

Maybe i am wrong, and this is something i dont have the energy in me to do, but a rough breakdown of the squad and where the cap is going would probably show where we have got it wrong. My personal belief is we have too many Reece Walsh's and Ezra Mams and not enough Jack Reeds.

We need more speed. We seem like a very slow team sometimes.

All these shortcomings (again, back-row is acknowledged) that need to be "addressed".

We need more speed! Almost like we need a Mariner.
We need more dependable workhorses in the middle! Jensen.
We are losing our best forward! We are gaining one of the best and most reliable middles in the game.
We need a hooker who can engage the markers! William.
Hunt & Reynolds are too old! We signed Pezet and re-signed Dufty.

Literally all our concerns (except back-row) for this year and future years are known and have been addressed. We're just decimated with injuries.

I feel that’s basically been the scouts mantra since we lost Cyril - just get the biggest and fastest kid at the carnival.

And of the smaller kids that are more footballers than athletes, we don’t seem to hang on to them or develop them properly anyway

That has a flip side, when the Broncos sign a Mozer and it takes 50 Cup games- it's why is he taking so long he should be bigger and rushed.

Is it 8 or 9 of our top 30 are 6's, 7's or 9's? That seems to be a huge imbalance

Pick your poison.

At least Willison can defend somewhat on an edge. With the others there, Willison was never going to get the ball to make metres to begin with.

Maybe lately but before his recent stretch of form he was the Broncos best according to the fine folks of BHQ.

Something doesn't compute.

Only after they both returned from serious injury. Pretty sure Bukowski is out again (need confirmation, Seagulls have the bye this weekend) and Mozer hasn't exactly been banging the door down.

Still don't know about this. I think these the workhorses like Talty, Paix, Gosiewski etc. are getting exposed a bit. It's a different era of the game too - a kill or be killed era and the guys just look miserable after digging deep and falling short.

Bukowski got another knock to his collar bone last week and had to come off, same one he just spent weeks fixing and didn't play for three weeks.

No fracture but he gets this week off so hopefully two weeks enough.

Are you only allowed one fast guy? And how many years now has back row been an issue? Three? With a guy who yeah he’s a gun when he plays but is out as often as in with Piakura.

One dependable middle who ironically due to medical issues is now questionnably dependable. Are you not allowed to have more?

We went into this season and last at least one middle and two backrowers short. And we aren’t producing them in droves either.

And while I like the potential of Poates and Verhoeven, neither looks super quick.

Why do we let Smoothy walk? Hetherington I understand we couldn’t do anything about so that’s not on the R&R team.

He's picked some absolutely cooked teams, and not dropped some absolutely useless footballers. The recruitment team need a right kick in the ass too.

Injuries haven't helped, but players not wanting to play footy, and being some of the dumbest creatures on earth, certainly hasn't helped.

And to think, they can't even get up with all of Suncorp chanting away with Alex Glenn pumping them up. Mediocre top to ****in bottom. Just waiting for DD to jump ship to go get on the end of PVL as NRL CEO.

Completely agree with the squad being so imbalance, since Jensen was injured we have not been able to replace him, and he is not an elite player, Willison is better but he has been played on the edges not in the middle. I think Jordan Riki is good but I honestly think he is a bench player, week to week his efforts aren't good enough, P Riki, Gos both horrible, but there is nobody to replace them with because we seem to have 6 or 7 halves / hookers on the books, of which only 3 play!

So like Anderson, Arthars, Hoeter, Karapani etc. I just listed? They're in the squad and most of them are getting exposed physically and athletically. Players like Jack Reed don't just grow on trees, Brisbane are signing those players it just isn't working out for a variety of reasons.

I agree with Mam, Reynolds and B. Hunt. That's a case of going all into win a premiership which they succeeded in. We're now seeing the after effects albeit the worst case scenario where everything that can go wrong has gone wrong.

The issue is that quality players don't grow on trees. It would be one thing if these players were in reserve grade putting their hand up but the gulf is just too big. Like I said, I think Madge has favoured these no frills players and the side looks like it would struggle in the QCup let alone the NRL.

Anderson i like, Karapani has been good, but i'm not a fan of Arthars ( but i know others are ) and i think Hoeter is shot, even though i've always pushed for us to bring him in a few years ago. I still think the issue is we dont have enough Andersons and Karapani's. We dont have enough players on good value contracts who come in and perform to a good level every week.

This is more what i am saying, and maybe i am saying it poorly, we dont have the cap space because we are wasting so much money on players like Walsh, Mam, Hunt etc so we cant offer an extra $100k or so a year to a better level of player to give us better depth. Too much money tied up in players who arent giving us good value. I expect our high earners to turn up and perform week in week out, thats why we pay them the money.

I dont believe though the players arent out there. There are always good players who arent getting opportunities at other clubs that would be happy to get an opportunity here. Who they are i'm not sure, but i'm not paid to go and search out these players. I'm fairly confident if the Broncos want to give me a full time contract i could find them some!

I mean 2 Grand finals in 3 years isn't something to scoff at. Must have had pretty decent players to do that.

Teams go through ups and downs as players get older and new ones come in. It's just sad that its happened so quickly after winning a premiership.

I think the "good value" contracts are usually the rookies/juniors that come through and you get first grade standard out of guys on rookie contracts until they need their upgrade.

Unfortunately that's the spot where it's lacking as the "good value" contracts you want going to rookies is going to scraps from other teams.

BTK has provided 5 games from 2-3 years of top 30 contracts.

Mozer hasnt been getting selected, mostly due to injuries, but is there a plan to get him back in... and is he unseating Bhunt or Paix?... I think he should be but will Madge make the call.

Then you have guys like Jhunt, Tawha, Talty, Gos, Hoeter, Priki, Rogers, Perham, etc. taking up Top 30 contracts where it's like "could we seriously not find a junior that can outperform these guys".

If Madge doesnt want to use Jhunt, then why not give that contract to Jett??

That's probably my issue... why have guys on Top 30 contracts that the coach clearly doesn't want to use.

I just named 8 guys on Top 30 contracts... that's almost a third of the available contracts and does the coach even want to select them

Are these good under-appreciated players in the room with us right now, Wolfie?

I expect high earners to achieve results. If this is wasting money so be it:

As far as I'm concerned with this squad it's mission accomplished. This is the after effect of going down that route amplified by injuries and this refined touch football esque meta.

There is certainly room for improvement moving forward but there's only so much that can be done with this squad at the moment.

I think players like Anderson, Talty etc. are exactly the players being described. There's only so much they can do and you can see the down-side of those signings.

When you pay a bloke like Walsh so much money, i think its fair to expect more than one outstanding run of form and a premiership. I just always have the expectation we should have higher standards.

I dont disagree, we took a short term option to win a premiership. If we want sustained success, we need to be better in every department.
