THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

This. Reynolds going off with a bad hammy is just a regular day at work, but now we've lost Ezra? Did HGR **** his foot again? The season is awful but acting like this is the coach's fault or a recruitment issue (okay, back-row notwithstanding), we have the tactics, we have the fitness, we have the players, they're just all on the ****ing sidelines!
Nah **** that sack the coach and hire someone else... they'll fix it and when they don't sack that ****ing spud as well... who the **** hired that guy!! sack him too!!

So because I do team lists to cope with sadness, 2027 currently looks like this:

1. Walsh
2. Karapani
3. Staggs
4. Mariner
5. Poates
6. Mam
7. Pezet
8. Willison
9. Paix
10. Barnett
11. Piakura
12. Riki
13. Carrigan

14. Mozer
15. Jensen/Semu (if either comes back)
16. Talty
17. Tawful
18. Duffy
19. Verhoeven

If Jensen and/or Semu don't come back, oof.
Our best 19 when fully fit is gun. Just our depth is shocking.

I’d start Mozer and bring Billiam Walters off the bench. I’ve seen more from Duffy at 7 than Croft, I mean Pezet

Sack Hunt and Reynolds.

Absolutely factors that need to be considered for sure. But our forward pack has signed with Souths next year, there goes almost our entire go forward. Our coach's plan to address this while he is out this year? Put the one guy with go forward into the second row. Patty has looked cooked all year, so what do you do? Play him longer minutes.

Reynolds and Bunt both looked close to being done last year, Reynolds especially, so what do you do this year? Make them both undroppable. And who do you sign as depth / bench forward? Fletcher Baker 2.0.

If I'm trying to be fair though, at least Verhoeven and Poates are getting tastes of first grade even if it is going to destroy their confidence. There was an opportunity the last couple of weeks as we got some troops back to make a statement and Maguire does so with Mam but only sort of. Never mind the two 89 year olds who are both looking broken / bent, they don't get dropped and neither does the handbrake we have at 9 despite both Mozer and Bukowski being available.

This is where we have to look hard at our retention and recruitment. Having a good team and no depth is a dangerous game to play. Overpaying players because they appear to be superstars, or have the potential to be superstars is something else we seem to do. The squad is unbalanced with too many high earners and not enough workhorses.

When you have Walsh and Ezra you don't actually need anything crazy from your 7 & 9.

9 just needs to put good passes on the chest, and at least offer the threat of running.

7 just needs to get the long kicks into corners, ideally on the grass, and get Walsh and Ezra the ball when they need it.

I think in that sense, Pezet will be fine next year. 9 is still a big concern.

At least Pezet will actually be a running threat...though his hammies seem dodgy too, so at least there will be some squad consistency I guess.

We also seem to let the right type of players go. People talk about Coates and Walker etc.

For me, I can’t believe we let Smoothy go, Capewell. Hetherington.

Put the one guy with go forward into the second row.
Pick your poison.

At least Willison can defend somewhat on an edge. With the others there, Willison was never going to get the ball to make metres to begin with.

Patty has looked cooked all year,
Maybe lately but before his recent stretch of form he was the Broncos best according to the fine folks of BHQ.

Something doesn't compute.

Only after they both returned from serious injury. Pretty sure Bukowski is out again (need confirmation, Seagulls have the bye this weekend) and Mozer hasn't exactly been banging the door down.

Still don't know about this. I think these the workhorses like Talty, Paix, Gosiewski etc. are getting exposed a bit. It's a different era of the game too - a kill or be killed era and the guys just look miserable after digging deep and falling short.

I'm more convinced of it tbh than ever. I dont think its a new thing for me either, i think we over pay a lot of players who dont earn their contracts, and then we end up with players like Gosiweski, Jhunt, P.Riki etc who i dont think are up to it. I dont see a lot of middle ground.

We prioritise athleticism over footballers believing we can teach the athletes how to be footballers. Athletes stand out in junior carnivals usually because they are bigger, stronger or faster than everyone else, but in the nrl everyone is big, strong & fast.

Karapani, Anderson, Arthars, Duffy, Jensen, Hoeter, Rogers...

The list goes on and on.

Otherwise it's all a bit vague.

'Players aren't playing to their value!'

Ok, well I think the players should simply score more points and concede less points. They should also avoid injuries and giving away penalties.

Oh and above all else win.

It doesn't really get to the how or why.

Sure, I think you can be critical of how imbalanced the roster is and how they ought to have signed a backrow specialist. However lord knows who was even available.

Well right now Capewell is available funnily enough. Blore too but apparently he wants to go back to Sydney. But there are quite a few decent second rowers in England.

I feel that’s basically been the scouts mantra since we lost Cyril - just get the biggest and fastest kid at the carnival.

And of the smaller kids that are more footballers than athletes, we don’t seem to hang on to them or develop them properly anyway

I would trade a Reynolds and Hunt for a Capewell

Madge has to be taken some responsibility for where we're at as a team. The Recruitment and Retention team also needs to be cleared out. 2025 was a miracle. We've been bad way more than we've been good under Madge and Kevvie.
