THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

Funny he ended up signing for the bloke he first claimed was ripping him off. His first deal with us was 5 yr for 500k under Bennett iirc. He wanted constant upgrades throughout that contract.

We know Payne's salary from his court documents when he was suing Orr.

2017- $85,000
2018-$110,000
2019- $250,000
2020-$448,000
2021-$548,000
2022-$748,000
2023- $798,000
2024-$848,000

Take away 23 and 24 because he got an upgrade and signed for 25 and 26. After that upgrade the 23, 24, 25 and 26 would be over a million. But Broncos got him cheaply for a long while.

He wanted one upgrade in 23 but constant sounds better.

His figure was $300k-$350 which in 2000 was great money. The cap was 3 million.

In 1985 he was probably saying he'd only pay $45k for a front rower.

The figure has to go up but the stance is still the same.

So 1.4-1.5 million (whatever Haas is on) is not marquee money?

“That (not pay forwards top dollar) was a long time ago, that was before the salary cap changed,” Bennett said.

“But it’s all relevant to your ability. The more ability you have got the more relevant it is.

“And I think the really good ones have always got it (ability).

“Karmichael Hunt came out here at 18 and was outstanding, Darren Lockyer was 18 here when he played and was outstanding.”

Pretty clear his stance has changed and this is from 9 years ago, before he signed Paas on what is clearly marquee money. I wonder how much he's paying Difita and Murray too. Pretty ironic he is going to have an amazing forward pack and some really quality backs and no one to guide them around unless Walker can battle his age for a year or two and Reynolds and Bunt are both showing that is pretty difficult to do no matter how talented you are.

I'm not sure if Bennett was ever quoted but that figure was brought up in relation to Petero in 2007.

The cap for 2008 was $4,000,000.

How has he not changed his stance if a prop is the highest paid player at the club?

Seems to me like we've got a huge development and environment problem at the club. Loads of kids are choosing different options these days. Likely our priorities aren't right when scouting talent and choosing who to develop.

Is the problem Qcup and not the recruitment? We all hear about these amazing Qcup players, but they're mostly duds. Is there enough investment at that level? Or is it blind hope like lots of Qcup fans have?

I do think with them it depends on how they come into an NRL side. You kind of dont want to bring them in to struggling sides if you can help it.

Not having really followed it for a couple of years i'm a bit out of touch but there has always been the talent at that level. Some players kick on after they dont get a gig with an NRL club, like Toby Rudolf for example.

I thought the QCup worked out pretty well for Mariner and Karapani last year.

I can't think of too many hyped QCup players in the recent era who didn't work out. I've seen fans try and hype up Broncos juniors only to be told they're not setting the world on fire in QCup and act like they know better only to find out.

They were talking up a 17 year old as if he was the next Aflie...

Does our club even rate the Q Cup level of players.. can't think of the last q Cup player we've signed that ended up any good.
