THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

Then he is now probably on thin ice.
What MM needs is a D coach who can set the standards. I still don’t reckon Teo is a capable D coach but he was taking away that portion of work load from MM which allowed MM to concentrate on broader things and plan well.

I for one, reckon that since Teo’s departure, nonstop injuries to the squad compounded by lack of focus, belief and trust amongst players have all constrained MM’s focus.

The primary mess up for mine is the end of year Ashes and the dreaded trip we over enthusiastically signed upto to that shithole country prior to season opener have severely impacted our preseason preparation. End of this season is not going to help in that regards either as we will have the World cup at season’s end so, another short preseason going into 2027 😏.

Is the problem Qcup and not the recruitment? We all hear about these amazing Qcup players, but they're mostly duds. Is there enough investment at that level? Or is it blind hope like lots of Qcup fans have?
I mean I don’t follow the Qcup at all but I think the way the winner of Qcup gets towelled up every year by the winner of NSW cup is a fair induction of the quality difference.

How much did Bennett just pay Haas? 😂
While having arguably the worst spine in the comp. A sub-80kg gnome at fb, a 40 year old 5/8, a sub-80kg rookie half, a fat perpetually injured hooker.

Old Wayne hasn’t won a comp since 2010 for a reason

Yeah they'll be top 4 probably but their spine is still below average imo. I'd be shocked if they win a comp with that core roster. Their main win condition in tough games is still going to be Latrell going nuts and carrying them. "if" (big if), he stays fit/healthy and actually puts effort in.. He can carry them like Walsh did for us.

As we all know very well, Haas is not an X factor type player and will not win you games single-handedly.

So 1.4-1.5 million (whatever Haas is on) is not marquee money?

“That (not pay forwards top dollar) was a long time ago, that was before the salary cap changed,” Bennett said.

“But it’s all relevant to your ability. The more ability you have got the more relevant it is.

“And I think the really good ones have always got it (ability).

“Karmichael Hunt came out here at 18 and was outstanding, Darren Lockyer was 18 here when he played and was outstanding.”

Pretty clear his stance has changed and this is from 9 years ago, before he signed Paas on what is clearly marquee money. I wonder how much he's paying Difita and Murray too. Pretty ironic he is going to have an amazing forward pack and some really quality backs and no one to guide them around unless Walker can battle his age for a year or two and Reynolds and Bunt are both showing that is pretty difficult to do no matter how talented you are.

I don't think he has changed at all. If you asked him to list his positions in financial order front row would still be near the bottom.

He knows you can win with good or even great front rowers on not big money. But the reality is sticking to your guns and offering Payne 300k would be laughable in 2026.

How is it any different to what Penrith have done- JFH and Leota are/were criminally underpaid given what they have achieved for Penrith, but Penrith prioritises Cleary, Yeo, Edwards and To'o.

People said in 1989 they'll never pay 100k for a house and that's all well and good but if you're sticking to it in 2026, you're homeless.

I'm not sure if Bennett was ever quoted but that figure was brought up in relation to Petero in 2007.

The cap for 2008 was $4,000,000.

Yeah, Petero brought it to ahead, but I think it came about before that. He talks a lot about the value of positions- I think that came about in 1985 and the type of player you pay and what you pay them.

Does our club even rate the Q Cup level of players.. can't think of the last q Cup player we've signed that ended up any good.

Shibasaki was signed from Cup. He's probably going to be the poster child for a while.

Delouise and Rogers I think have always been good when called on. Smoothy came from Cup.

Forgot about Shiba. Don't know if Rogers or Delouise are top liners from cup that I'm talking about though. Smoothy could be a really good modern lock/hooker hybrid in the NRL so I'll count him for sure

Del was a top center in the cup for years. He's 32 now, this is his 5th year at the Broncos but he was probably unfortunate not to get a shot somewhere earlier than he did.

Not a guy who developed in cup and has played over 100 NRL games though is he. Those are the types our squad needs

Well, he did develop at Cup level, but no, he hasnt played enough NRL games. I think if you can bring somebody in from there and get 50 or 60 games from them i think thats decent. With Del though i think he could and should have done that really, but it needed him to be at a different club. He's a solid option who doesnt let you down.

So 1.4-1.5 million today is 300k back then? And despite Bennett saying he has changed his stance, from the man himself...you're saying you know better and that despite he himself saying it, he is wrong? That's quite funny even for your level of never being wrong.

Their halves must be on 1.7 a piece or something.

It's written in your quote- he said he has special exceptions to his rule. He didn't say he doesn't think it anymore.

He gave Lazo 600k in 1995 too.
