FOOTBALL FIFA World Cup 2026

Alright well as perverse as it sounds i think there's a few positives from this game.

1. We know what works and what doesnt. We have two games now to base this on. Need to get it right for the final game. Play to our strengths, dont try and play chess with team selections.

2. Volpato is absolutely the goods and should start in the final game. Came on and instantly made us better. Plays like he knows hes the best player on the pitch.

3. We finished strongly. Take that confidence into game 3 and wipe the first half from the memory bank.

4. Still in a great position to go through, which we all wouldve taken at the start of the world cup.
 
I guess it's good we only conceded two.

Hopefully Paraguay can get a result against Turkey.
 
I think thats the one issue this Australia team has, they need to not concede early because they become very vunerable when they have to chase a game because they cant keep their compact shape.

I thought they still played OK tbh.

Leckie and velupillay offered less than zero so not only could we not attack them and put them under any sustained pressure, but it was a total graveyard on both flanks so we were constantly out of position when we turned it over. Hard to be a brick wall when only half the bricks are in place and outside of maybe circati, 1 on 1 our defenders will get cooked.

It was no accident once we had metcalfe and volpato on we looked instantly better - because we could make some meaningful passes and advance the ball without instantly turning it over.

The whole shape of you guys relies on not conceding early. Cricati is a quality defender, but i think he is the only one with enough mobility. I like Bos as well, but i dont think he had his best game either. The wing backs were excellent in the last game but this game they didnt really get forward well enough which you need from them if you play with a back 3.
 
Yeah I think again for the wingbacks to play well they need to link up with confidence to those ahead of them. If you're pushing forward in support and they turn it over you're out of position and then yeah, refer to us being cooked 1 on 1.
 
I wonder if Aus kind of looked at this one as a bit of a mulligan. Keep your guns as fresh as possible and go after Paraguay. Basically, even if Turkey win both remaining games and get a better goal differential, if Aus beat or even draw Paraguay, they likely go through as one of the best third place finishers. So this game was probably the one that didn't matter so much.

I'm not saying its right but Aus has a young team and with that comes inconsistency and all you need to do is be 2% off at this level and its over.
 
I just think its was disappointing after the high of last Sunday to come in so negative with team choices this morning.

They'll say they wanted them to come on fresh in 2nd half, but as Wolfie said, the whole game plan relies on not conceding early essentially when you aren't willing to change shape, and we didn't look in the game even remotely until the subs came on.

Still a good chance of going through, which youd have absolutely taken if offered, just think we submitted before the game even began with those changes.
