THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

Riki and Semu, sorry I meant re-signed.

Semu in a vacuum is a great signing, he has shown a lot this year. The non-vacuum flip side though is that we still don't know what his chest issue was. If it was heart related, he might be done before he even began sadly. It would be good for the club to come and say something, either that it is serious or not even if they don't give details.

Piki on the other hand is not a kid and he's been a journeyman for a reason. His first game was decent and he has just gotten progressively worse. He is looking like Tawha - two very poor recruitment decisions.

Yeah, and if Jensen doesn't make it back due to his clotting issue. Our middles are looking grim next season.

So we didn't even play on the weekend, but our majority shareholder still managed to write no less than 3 negative articles about us. All of which have a bit of a dig at our premiership winning coach.

The first one was about Te'o leaving and the "Te'o Effect"

The second was about how "Cobbo's resurrection" at the Phins is another "black eye" for us after Cobbo struggled to adapt to life under Madge. Most of the article was about his performance for QLD rather than for the Phins, but they do have a Cobbo quote about how Wolfe helped rebuild his confidence... FTR, Cobbo never shit on Madge or the club

The third was about how Billy "broke" Payne Haas and how if rivals follow his blueprint it spells trouble for us.

The timing is very odd. I get the Te'o one tbf. The Payne one, well, he's never been as consistently brilliant for nsw as he has for the Broncos, but he's still never had many bad games for the grubs.

The Cobbo article is off to me. He's played brilliantly for the Broncos, then he's let himself down through his application. Its not like he has been out of this world every week for the Phins, he's just on a hot streak for a team thats on a hot streak.

Not to come across like sour grapes but his NSW performances really do show that Payne is missing some intangible at this point in his career.

He is all effort, he is a freak athlete but he just doesn’t add that much to the success or his teams.

It’s really hard to figure out. Maybe it’s aggression or something. He chips away endlessly motoring along at 80% for massive minutes.

Never has put on a big hit, rarely has a run that makes you gasp due to the heavy contact.

It’s really weird because he is elite in pretty much every tangible measure.

Hard to argue with any of that. Must admit, i've always said with him he lacks aggression and physicality.

I think Hass is just a decent forward, but can do it much longer and consistent than most other players (which is where the "elite" part comes in).

So while that time and consistancy helps with his stats (and our rotations) at club land - it can easily be countered with 2 decent forwards (like a Tino and Collins) doing the same thing i.e. minutes, meters, etc. at origin.

Funnily enough Payne's best origin series was probably 2024 under Madge... but if you listen to the media he's apparently now leaving because of Madge.

But the lack of physicality and aggression is basically only evident in defence.

It's not like he plods up to the line like Terrell May 20 times a game.

He's not making 10-15m a hitup doing that.

I'd say Tino missing the 2024 series would have helped Payne out considerably. Still, that was the first series where his Origin form was better than his club form.

His time at the Broncos feels monolithic. However there were times where his form wavered and he struggled to make an impact. 2021-22 and 24 come to mind.

To his credit, his 2025 was pheonemal capped off by that game against the Panthers. Stats won't show it, but him covering the Talagi ricochet to deny Penrith and his chase on Cleary were unbelievable for a prop forward who played 80 minutes.

He's got different strengths and you need to blend it with other forwards. We have both him and Carrigan who are just machines really, but we lack a forward who can really hit hard and intimidate.

I'd still take Webcke over him every day of the week.

The media suck and that Cobbo one really highlights it. He actually commended the club for letting him go, that it was the kick in the pants he needed and they were right to do so.

He only answered a question, didn't give the response they wanted, in fact the opposite, yet he still is being represented as a Maguire issue. I'd imagine this one is pretty close to slander actually. At best misrepresentation to what was said.

I was thinking about this while I was studying Tawha but that era of Warea-Hargreaves is over. If you try to emulate it, you end up like Kaufusi or Asofa-Solomona and you're effectively stamped out of the game.

It seems to be more about pushing off the line than actually looking to put hits on.

I dont think you need to be like JWH to hit hard. Its still possible to put on hard shots and that in turn would intimidate your opponent. The more thuggish type of forward is as you say getting stamped out of the game.

Jay dubya wasn't known as a hitter .
More of a grub . Dog shot merchant.

Radley is a better example. And he's still getting away with it .
