2012 NRL Finals system changed

So it's sudden death for teams 5-8. That's exactly how it bloody should be! The fact that team 6 could still survive if they lose was a disgrace.

And I tell ya what, there's going to be some absolute cracking games in the first week! The top 4 teams playing each other just goes without saying, BUT the fact that it's sudden death for teams 5-8 means there's going to be some epic encounters.

Yes i agree, a totally better system all the way !!

Finishing in the top 4 will now mean you have the advantage you deserve

This is excellent news.

The Independent Commision has struck a major blow already :woot:

I've never had a major problem with the McIntyre system. with the new system finishing first is irrelevant (apart from the clubs financial gain). as long as you finish top 4 you get the same advantage. also now for top 4 teams since they can't be eliminated in round 1, the run the risk of serious injury to a key player in effectively a nothing game (although they will get higher tv ratings).

Winning week 1 is the difference between a week off and a home game week 3 and playing week 2 and playing week 3 away... If you get that far.

And you think that week 1 is a nothing game?

Awesome move by IC.

Should have been this way a long time ago

Finally.

Was a disgrace last year when we absolutely flogged the Warriors from here to timbucktwo only for them to end up finishing higher than us.

well 1 & 2 get home games where 3 & 4 don't.

so the difference between the broncos finishing 1/2 and playing at suncorp instead of finishing 3/4 and playing in melbourne/anywhere else is significant imo. but you still get the second chance (ie reward for finishing top 4) if you lose.

at least this year the warriors cant finish 6th, get smashed in round 1 of finals, then get an arguably easier (and well yes, lower finishing team) match up the following week!

it will mean less dud games ala last years 1v8 and 2v7 games in first week of finals footy.

and you run the risk of a serious injury to a key player in every game of the season, so thats *kind of* irrelevant.

i love the change. makes complete sense to me.

So who's worked out whether Manly wolud've been premiers last year or not if the new finals system was in place? (based purely on speculative winners of course)

So instead of us playing Warriors,Saints and Manly last year we would have had to play Manly-win get a week off then West Tigers then Melbourne in the GF or Manly-lose then Warriors then Melbourne then Manly in the GF?

There is absolutely nothing lost by this decision. And plenty gained. About flippin time.

Absolutely, however i bet you wouldn't be saying that if Broncos was in that position.

Doubtful.

I was on the Cowboys bandwagon in 2005 after the Broncos were eliminated and thought it was pretty ordinary that they somehow managed to make the Grand Final despite being flogged by 50 or so.

A team outside of the 4 don't deserve any second chances.

Which highlights another pro of the non-McIntyre system. We are less likely to see big scorelines like that. Like Rock said, should produce some epic games.

That was team 4 vs 5. I wouldn't have expected that score line.
