2018 NRL Side

We all would.

While I appreciate you qualifying your statement, I was only pointing out he's not the only one that cops it (and copping it doesn't equal scapegoating, imo).

Fair point, i just dont think he is anywhere near a poor captain as others make out. He has huge respect from the players, and he wouldn't be getting that if he wasnt a leader.

People like to take a look at a few moments and make up their mind about players while ignoring everything else.

Just the way it is.

I agree to an extent. I think his leadership off the field is better than his on field leadership - which isn't bad per se, just not as good as it could/should be.

Some of the criticism of his captaincy is mixed in with criticism of his ability/performance at fullback as well.

Just the way it is.

Look, I like Boyd. But he has an element of the pea heart about him...he just does. Whether it's not having a dig trying to stop tries, or returning the ball, or whinging after being tackled - it's something that is obviously ingrained in who he is as a person. It's a bad quality for a leader. I was happy for him to become captain last year, but he needs to cut that shit.

He simply doesn't like getting tackled hard, who does right? But you just look like a bitch waving your arms about after being smashed. Milf cops it on here for whinging (probably justified), but again, he's had Hunt and Boyd to look up to the last few years, top notch sook-when-it's-not-going-our-way types.

Am I scapegoating Boyd by saying this? Is the whinging reflective of our team in general?
Absolutely fair criticism.

Boyd was incredibly consistent in 2016, and I think he was the best option for captain off the back of that.

His maiden season as captain was reasonable, but if he wants to be a great leader, he's got to set a better example to his troops.

Hodges may have been waning in 2015 but his attitude was always first class. Always kept his chin up, and fought tooth and nail on every play. In retrospect, Parker may not have been the leader we needed in 2016 but he was a warrior too.

Not expecting Boyd to play like he's a young Karmichael Hunt but the whole team would benefit if he rolled up his sleeves, quit the milking and showed them some hunger.

Have his on field performances been that bad though? I'd say they dipped a fair bit by his standards when he picked up that injury in Origin, but aside from that i'd say he was very good for us before. Until that time, he was the best fullback going around imo, and he certainly pretty much has been since he rejoined us.

A lot of our problems are team problems - predictable attack, lack of finishing, handling errors, unmotivated defence, lack of mental toughness etc. Boyd is very good, and my criticisms are things I think he can fix - depending on his fitness and mentality. He was excellent in '16, the best with Billy out (I also think Billy taking his spot last year and performing so well might have affected him mentally), but he is sometimes inconsistent and I don't see a plan B from him when things aren't going to plan. This troubles me. It's not really a matter of 'that bad' but sometimes 'good enough?' - that goes for his leadership as well as personal performance. And again, this is not scapegoating, even though as captain be shares the blame for failure and enjoys credit for success. But I like him, alot, and when he is healthy and happy, he's one of our most important players and I love what he does, despite having some things I would like him to improve on.

Then what happens to Boyd? Can we throw him in the bin and get our 3 plus million dollars back?

Nah, jokes aside what is the future for Boyd guys? Surely fullback will not be his position in 2 years time. It would have to be center I assume. No one pays that kind of coin for a winger.
How do you know what we are paying for him?

Because he read an article in the paper... and reporters never guess or make shit up [emoji14]

Although in this case $3 million over 4 years would be pretty close to what a fullback of Boyd's standing is worth...

He is not the right fit for captain, but Wayne sees differently.

It has been reported that it even too the Great Darren Lockyer several years to grow into the captaincy role. In fact his making as a captain wasn't until the 2006 Origin series.

Boyd should be given a proper shot.

Besides, all you see of Boyd is a few minutes a week and only what Nine or Fox decide to show you ... and you do realise that there is more to being a captain than just those few minutes a week that you see Boyd, right?

Hell, there is even more to being a captain than just game day.

Search Round 17, 2013.

That game was a lot closer than what the scoreline suggested. We were well in it but Maranta just bombed try after try after try.
He had an ability like no other winger I’ve ever seen before (and hopefully won’t again).
I’ve never seen someone choose not to back themselves with a clear saloon passage to the corner or simply drop the ball with the line begging more consistently than Maranta.
It was like some kind of sadistic torture watching him on the wing. And he had Hodges inside him - how can you look bad outside Hodges!

So according to article so far, the Broncos front-row will be:

8. Lodge

10. Flegler-Tagataease-Sims-Joffa-Thaiday-McGuire

That number 10 is going to be hard to find a jersey to fit.

I reckon Sims and Lodge to start, Tagatese and Joffa as relief....just want the season to start

I'm a Boyd fan, but I can't argue with this

Well i do have a small clue what NRL life is about - i did play here and English league. If i was a player in that team - out of frustration i would be nearly choosing to stand up and lead myself (potentially this did happen last year during a few games too). There are too many instances where he is just not hungry/angry/to no prisoners enough. Yes i understand off the field life however on the field a job still needs to get done and that potentially he is too nice.

What makes him not the right fit? Like i said, the players totally respect him both on and off the pitch, He is one of our most key players on it as well. To see some of the ( quite valid as well based on his performances after his Origin injury ) comments about him you would think all he does is timidly bring back the ball and whine about getting tackled. The whining i agree with to a point, i dont like the look of it, but his kick returns not having much impact were down to him not being 100% fit. The club obviously thought he could manage it and they also must obviously think a 70% fit Boyd is still a much better option than any of our other fullbacks.

On top of that, i actually think we have a lack of leaders anyway. Outside of maybe Macca, i dont see much captain material at the moment out there.

I don’t believe you.
