POST GAME 2023 NRL Grand Final - Penrith vs Brisbane

All year when we where in the position we where at once we got to 24 points we kept attacking, we deviated from that probably because it was a GF and that is why we lost, had we kept playing how we normally would, we would of taken off.

That was the only part of the game where Penrith's line speed had died and it was the time to go for the kill, even if a Walsh edge play might lead to an intercept, just go for the jugglar.
Until they do that and it is intercepted and we are all saying play safer.

It’s frustrating that we could have done things better but Penrith were going to win that regardless. They are just so good and we were so inexperienced in finals and unfortunately our only two with experience had bad games by their standards. It happens and they will be better for it.

I reckon if Herbie’s dumb pass had gone anywhere other than give them a 20m head start down field we still win it regardless. That was the moment and the roll of the ball just went their way. If we had have scored there and then, and we were very likely to, Cleary never got the chance he took with both hands. So many ifs and buts and I feel sorry for Herbie that the two biggest ones really came down to his errors.

Not anymore, our last two GF losses have came in the same way with us being pussies trying to defend than go for the kill, playing it safe worked in 2006 but we had Lockyer.

I didn't think they played it safe on Sunday until they saw a pass hit the deck and be scooped up and change the momentum of the game. I bet the leaders of the team and maybe even the coach got a message down straight after that to calm down. That's a hard mentality to get out of when there is only 17mins left and you are up 3 tries. It's hard to blame them. They did not do anything like what they did in 2015. Everything had to go right for the Panthers in the last section of the game. Kicks missing legs and falling into the in goal. Deft kicks from centres from 30m out plopping right on the goal line. Cleary just coming up with play after play. Penrith took it for the most part.

line speed was absolutely non existent in the last 20 though, and the kicking was way too conservative, it definitely looked like a protection play from there on.

I dont know if the line speed was a result of trying to conserve the game. The kicking (when reynolds actually kicked it) was horrible.
He didn't actually try and kick it out. He was just bad. The dump the ball to piakura on the 5th was horrible. I reckon he got confused with the tackle count. It was loud after that Walsh break. Broncos fans there I think reckon that was the moment it was going to be really finished for good.
That is inexcusable if he didn't know the count though. He was a dear in the headlights for such an experienced player. It wasn't even right on the goal line. It was like closer to 20m out. That's what makes me think he didn't know it was the last. If you are going to run it you have got to atleast do it close to the goal line and jam it in a corner.

Also if anything going for short flat drop outs aiming at the sideline which I actually think is always the right play when you are up in games was the opposite of conservative.

we went into the failure strategy of trying to protect a lead rather than win.

The best defence is attack, that time we didn't kick it on the last when in their 20 near the end showed it all, I could see in the stands how there was no plan to actually attack at the end it was full protection strategy stupid shit.

There was just way, way too much time left in the clock for them to have shifted to that mindset too. You could tell from the first of those tries that Penrith could runaway with it. The momentum they gained was huge.

I wonder if anyone had a thought to show the 2015 grand final as an example of what happens if you try to go conservative too early and kick to a win and play hang-and-wait defence

I have to question how it wasn't seen from the sidelines for a message to Reynolds by Alf.

Surely Kev's sending instructions during this period from up in the box.

Over-committing is one of my pet hates. You see it all the time with outside defenders running across to cover a winger, who just casually steps back inside and the defence has far too much momentum to go with them.

I'm not going to give it to Riki and Walters, I love 'em both, it's just something that's annoyed me whenever we concede tries like that over the years. There's a balance to it, an art.
This happened with the Crichton try as well. Total over commitment by walsh. Then he had no commitment on Cleary.

There’s footage of both coaches reactions during these moments. Kevvie is surprisingly calm and quiet. It was Cartwright giving the instructions. Kevvie was there for 2015, he should have saw this coming.

You can see it when at the ground how it didn't look like there was any attack strategy, more of a get tackled on their end and think it will be good going forward, usually on the 5th they would have the Walsh edge play plus wings sorted for a kick if Reyno did it, but there was none of it.

We abanded Broncos footy essentially.

You'd think losing two grand finals in the same way will force them to focus on closing out games.

For ***** sake, Reynolds HAS to have the ball ready to kick every last tackle. NO ONE ELSE should be touching it. This is a communication issue between him and the hooker and knowing when it's the last every time.

As has been said a hundred times, It's the fundamentals that are killing us. Cut out the errors, get to a kick and put pressure on. Cleary/Crichton did that to perfection when it mattered.

Oh yeah didn't mention it before but Broncos fans definetly outnumbered Panthers in the GF, embarrssing for a Sydney team to be outnumbered by a QLD team at home, but we are soo well supported it was basically inevitable.

From what I saw it looked 60/40 split on the fans, until the end every panthers chant turned into a Broncos chant.

if Vlandys is serious about every year bidding for a gf and it's at Suncorp and we are there it will be a Broncos home game lol.

I do feel as though after that hit Reyno got he wasn't the same, he was not kicking like he had all year from that point.

Not that it matters anymore but my wife sent me this from her FB feed:

It was absolutely devastating and there were tears at fulltime last night, but I do want to point out one significant fact about the last 5-10 minutes of last night's Grand Final. Gale force winds picked up in that time and made it impossible for the Broncos to get the ball out of their end with those goal line drop-outs. If Reynolds had tried to kick long balls (which would have been the ideal play for the Broncos), the ball would have ended up in the grandstand to the left of where he was kicking. Even the short balls were ending up on the left sideline. Without that gale force wind picking up toward the end of the game, the Broncos would have won the Grand Final last night! 💔😪 THAT'S MY TEAM! 🐴🐎❤️💛❤️💛❤️”.

Can someone who attended the game confirm this?

There was definitely more wind at the end, cold wind which cooled this fucken oval bullshit it was before, it's hard to tell how strong it was due to the shape of the stadium but due to how much the temperature changed I would say that's accurate.

basically the first 55 mins or so the area had no wind the stadium was like 10 degrees hotter than outside the stadium due to the shit design of Homebush which doesn't have air gaps on the edge of the stands like Lang Park and Commbank, It honestly wouldn't be that big of a renovation to fix it but NSW dogs are too lazy to fix their shit stadium.
