2024 NRL General Discussion Thread

I'm not sure they'll have to. They'd really only have to spend 12 weeks there a year wouldn't they? They'd be like a FIFO footy player.
I think if they do that then they can't claim they're not living in Australia and therefore have to pay the ATO... so PNG tax exemptions won't mean as much.

Do NRL players spend the entirety of the year in the city their club is from... I don't think so.
A lot longer than what you're suggesting.

They'd be able to schedule it so they spend most of their time in Australia or NZ. Game on Saturday in Brisbane or Sydney? Lets fly in Monday and train in Cairns or Logan all week. In Sydney the next week? Let's stay here. Game in PNG the next week? Time to jump on the plane and head to the compound.

Chaotic lifestyle just what a team needs........

Speaking as someone who lived in Port Moresby for a while... Nowhere near enough. I don't think a lot of you blokes realise just what a dangerous place it is, and that's fair enough without having spent time working there.

I know, compounds, security guards, etc etc. Reality is that security advice when I was there if someone got in, was to grab your shotgun from under the bed, blow them away, then put a round into the ceiling as a warning shot so you could tell the cops you fired one.

The question is were you a professional rugby league player when you were living there.

These guys are going to be treated by the PNG public, like the Indians treat their cricketers ... i.e. like gods.

I have zero doubt that they'll be perfectly safe over there. Besides the reporting is that they'll be developing a fully secure compound for the team / staffers to live ... and you can bet your bottom dollar, this compound will be a combination of a regular town and a 5 star resort, they'll have all the amenities they could ever need

We're no betting bottom dollars.......we're betting NRL players lives.

The SMH have put together a top 30 roster for the new PNG team.

They've based it on a $12.5 million salary cap

"we have recruited only from players coming off contract in 2027, and a few in 2026 after urging them to sign one-year deals and keep themselves available for us 12 months down the line. We won’t be approaching anyone under contract – that’s illegal in the NRL"

again you prove you're dumber than dogshit.

literally the first thing I did when this was announced was complain about it.

there is plenty wrong with this move from the NRL ... you don't need to resort to making shit up
