OFFICIAL 2025 State of Origin - Game I Discussion

If we watch footage of the tigers and dragons game, Su'A kept getting caught out in no man's land. There were times he was slow ripping back into A or B when he peeled off from tackles. It was only just one game and maybe I'm over analyzing everything 😅

He meets the selection criteria but I thought he was all kiwi as well. Did he surpass cobbo in the pecking order or is cobbo injured?
Cobbo was injured coming out of yesterday's game, so I'd say that is the reason for him not getting picked

Gilbert is a big loss.

He's that type of no nonsense take no prisoners forward that's perfect for Origin.

NSW have had the better pack overall for a number of years now, but we've still won the 3 of the past 5 series. Hopefully Billy has learned his lesson from last series and has a plan this year.

The next few Origin series are going to be interesting to watch re: Billy Slater. I deadset suspect NSW are heading for their own dynasty period. We'll be wiped 3 and 0 this year, next year may not be much better, and the year after that will depend entirely on how our prospective youngsters trend.

How much rope will he really be given?

Depends if he trains the team too hard.

The big question will be halfback.

Sam Walker and Dearden are probably the likely ones that will be fighting for it, but neither has a kicking game that is winning you the territory battle if the forward pack is getting dominated.

Qld will be praying that Walsh can get his form back, because he hits them very sweetly.

You also need someone to show that they are clutch... Walsh hasn't really shown that as yet... Dearden is all heart and will always put himself in the spot, but being clutch is usually about kicking game when you're a half.

I think Sam Walker has kicked some field goals last year and I think on a couple occasions they were clutch game winners, so he might be the one needed moving forwards.

If your after a kicking game Fogarty or Trindall are good at that. NSW always had better depth but best they can manage is 3 in a row so dont see how that changes much now.

Fogarty is probably the best option when it comes to a long kicking game.

He doesn't bring much else, but I guess if you have Grant/Munster/Walsh in the spine, you could probably get away with having Fogarty there just for his kicking game.

My comment was more thinking about the long term future and the younger guys coming through.

Agree that Fogarty is the next best when considering kicking game, but he's already over 30, so origin is probably passing him by in the near future anyway.

Trindall is interesting, but I'm not as impressed with him given how he combines with his halves partner (ie Nicho)... it feels like he over calls and plays a bit of Hollywood ball at times.

When it comes to origin he would only be there for his kicking so we wouldn't necessarily be wanting him overcalling guys like Dearden, Walsh, Munster, Ponga, etc.

Is that because Nicho is just useless when the pressure is on though?

He is very useless when the pressure is on, but in general play he's been quite good at creating when he is getting the good ball... which has been happening more often in recent times... and that's what he has been good at since joining sharks.

The more good ball he gets the more effective he is, but them as a pairing it seems to get lost on who is meant to be in control and who should get priority in good ball situations
