The next TV rights deal makes it delicate as well... Foxtel will be under new ownership, which will be an international this time around.

Will they be seeing the same valuation in league as what Foxtel under Murdoch sees.

Foxtel TV rights has been carrying the competition (AFL and NRL) to these heights, but if they go away or fall back to the pack (Ch 9, 7, etc.), will there be an adjustment to the salary cap and how does that flow on to these high salary players.

They wont want to reduce their salaries, but will the money be there after they've taken their slice

Whenever you see new ownership of any business of any kind, there's a golden rule: they will raise prices and dilute the product. They will have been sold the belief they can make more money than the previous owner. The previous owner sold because they could see a darkness at the end of the tunnel.

I previously have thought this. Payne is still better but if he was asking for 1.2mil as season at next contract negotiation, but willison was asking 750k who would you be keeping?

Tempting, as opening 450k to dedicate elsewhere to significantly improve a weakness (I.e second row, halves when reyno and hunt retire), for a bit of a loss in the middle. Carrigan, Jensen and kobe (especially yesterday) have shown they can play big minutes. Wilison is capable of more minutes too.
 
One thing I hated to see was the post game presser where Walsh took a swipe at Flanagan. Not that I don't think Flanagan is a fuckwit for having a shot in the first place, I just wish they would let their football do the talking. It also makes me think that Madge may not have them as disciplined as much as I would like.

Payne will definitely want his cash, but I think he also wants success... and from all accounts he seems very settled in Brisbane and best mates with Patty, so presumably Walsh as well.

If the team is successful this year and Payne is seeing the potential for premierships and ongoing success at the club, he may be willing to stay for a lower offer compared to the market.

Are we getting him for under $1m... doubtful... but that's why the next TV rights deal is integral to all this. People would expect the salary cap to just keep going up, the game is in a great spot with record revenue and TV numbers so why shouldn't it, but the deal has effectively been sole sourced under Foxtel with Channel 9 coming along for the ride as a simulcast.

The new owners may not see the international value associated with NRL... they might look to go back in for EPL and the other big European leagues given its international appeal. They may think Rugby is more viable due to the international appeal, etc. is there any English Rugby coverage in Australia?? who cares no one would watch it anyway.

And that would be the thing about the new owners (is it DAZN or something?), if they're looking at the domestic market they've bought into, they need to know what the demographic watches... the hope for us is that they see value of NRL in that market.

Presumably they've bought into the market for a reason... but maybe it's just because ESPN has rights for US sports like NFL, NBA, etc. Foxtel has SEN sports (I think they cover the European soccer leagues), but if they disregard NRL and AFL then the existing subscriber base will head elsewhere... and potentially the vast majority would ditch it.

Either way the NRL has mouths to feed so this may be one of the most important TV deals in its history.

I think that it shows it's front of mind across the squad... I agree that I would prefer it stay private within the group, but Bhunt might be quietly seething about it and be driven to prove doubters wrong.

Hopefully we put 60 on dargons in Rd 11 because of those comments and the squad wanting to stick up for Benny.

Fair game, and it was ribbing Hunt as much as Flanno. Just a bit of healthy banter between team mates. Nothing wrong with that.

Players will always leave. It's inevitable, and harder to keep them as the salary cap becomes a victim of your success. They can even leave for the most inexplicable reasons. Look at Jarome Luai, one half of the most successful halves pairings in recent memory. He left his comfy, record breaking position in the best team in the competition, for the wooden spooners.

Our threat level has amped massively since the arrival of the cashed up Dolphins, who look capable of becoming a premiership prospect. Man babies like Selwyn can simply move across town instead of further away from their childhood friends and family. Meanwhile, half our team seems spirituality more aligned with the Gold Coast than Brisbane these days. The Titans will always be a threat on lifestyle, just maybe not on anything else.

The reports are that Netflix will be possibly in the works for the next TV rights deal.

Madge isn't some over the top dictator who tells his players exactly what to say and how to act, they're men. They are still allowed to be themselves.
