2026 NRL General Discussion Thread

well said Joey

I don't actually agree.

In regards to the Sorenson one, if the pack tackling technique requires one tackler to go in with the shoulder only, that there is the problem. If they have to cut back the number of tacklers there to two in order to have a legal shot at the runner, that is the solution. It brings the hard-running middle forward back in to the game.

In terms of bunker intervention, why try to even hide the fact that the bunker has more influence on the game than the on-field ref? The guy on the field is just a proxy anyway. The bunker just needs to not suck as badly.

The inconsistency I agree with.

You might not agree with that one example and if so, fair enough but the rest of what Johns said is bang on. I'm frustrated, I'm sure most are.

Johns might be looking for a new job this week and its a shame that it takes such a space cadet to talk sense.

Dunno if anyone still dabbles in 360, but I found this very interesting. Problem is, the inconsistent rulings impact this as well.

Also shows clearly which teams get pinged more than others for imo similar offences. It's a shock to nobody that Storm and Penrith are on the low side, and Dogs would have been until this past weekend.

Wahs and Phins was interesting though.

Abdo has spoken ... there has been no crack down, it is on the players / coaches. he said:

“Well, I think it’s a collective responsibility in the game, right?” Abdo said.

“It’s an incredibly hard job because you’re looking at a very technical game played at speed. The adjudication in a sport such as ours is never going to be an exact science.

“There’s always going to be areas of judgement. I think we also need to accept that - we need to do better and we will. Hopefully we’ll see that playing out in the next couple of rounds.

“We also don’t want to see the incredible increase in high tackles that we’re seeing at the moment.

“As a game, we’re not going to take a backward step on player safety and protecting players. Equally, we also want a game that flows and I get the frustration around the stop-start nature of too much intervention, particularly the use of technology.

“So we’re going to think about that and adjust accordingly.”

Asked whether he was concerned that the game could suffer another black eye during Magic Round, which was blighted by sin-bins and send-offs three years ago, Abdo said:

“I don’t think we’re at that stage.

“Hopefully we get that balance right. It’s not an exact science, but we’re certainly going to keep looking at ways in which we can get the consistency that’s required, that howlers are not missed and the obvious ones are not missed.

“There’s always going to be those 50-50 calls and those are the ones that will be debated. That’s okay. As long as we aren’t missing the obvious ones or we are not overreacting.

“There’s been no policy change, but obviously the implementation of the policy is where the issue is and the bunker intervening. It’s meant for serious acts of foul play and I think that there have been instances where it hasn’t met that threshold.

“So we want to obviously reinforce that threshold with the referees, particularly the bunker, because it does have an impact on the game when you pull it back and no one likes that, right?

“It’s really there for howlers. It’s really there for an exceptional serious act of foul play. We’ll work on that this week and make sure that everyone is really clear on that, because there have been a few issues where there were some errors made and there were some sin-bins that we don’t think warranted for sin bin.

“But equally, there were some that actually could have gone the other way.”

Abdo insisted the use of the bunker wasn’t solely to blame for the rash of sin-bins.

“You know, the thing about rugby league is that we’re all very passionate about our views,” he said.

“So I get the frustration. I will say, too, that unfortunately this season, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of high tackles and that is playing a role because more high tackles is always going to mean more penalties and more sins and we don’t want that.

“So there’s also an opportunity for us to try and make sure that the players are focused on avoiding dangerous, and high contact, wherever possible.

“It is a balance. That is what we’re trying to do - we’re trying to get that balance right.”

p.s. the NRL are getting blasted from every angle ... and sounds like the refs will be told to settle down for one week to avoid a black eye during magic round.

It was ****in ridiculous, if I didn't play supercoach, there's zero chance I would watch any game that doesn't involve the Broncos.

What I find amusing is that they've sold out the stadium on the Sunday (or at least the tickets they made available have been sold). Couldn't buy any on ticketek.

Broncos, Storm and Dogs are all Sunday, it was always going to be a sellout.

Broncos have sold out every year and every time we've been on Friday night... so only 2 games... I'd imagine Friday is the hardest to sell out followed by Sunday, because people thinking they need to get home at some point.

Having 3 games helps, but NRL can basically schedule it so whoever is the worst drawcard can just be chucked with us and that day will be a sell out.

Interestingly it looks like Friday night has the most tickets available.

Lol at dolphins tickets being the only team allocation available.

I've stopped watching NRL totally now. Dont like how the game has gone, cant stand how its officiated. Its not even a Broncos thing, i just think the rule changes have got out of control.

Explains why you've been a bit quiet on the NRL threads lately mate, understandable.

I have similar thoughts, I'm still watching, but I'm a sucker for punishment 🤣

I only watch the ESL. I watch NRL games if I'm not out or nothing else is on. I never watch a non-Broncos replay. As you all know, I prefer the AFL unless the Broncs are playing.

I don't think Abdo won any fans with his 'charm offensive' tonight. Trotted out the same lines on 360 and whatever the channel 9 version is. As always he spoke in vague terms and popped out some unimportant statistics. The guy is way out of his depth.

Maybe we're just ill disciplined, especially with the high tackles? I don't remember too many bad calls against us regarding high tackles (not enough to explain that discrepancy between us and say the Warriors or Dolphins).

I've been frustrated for years now. This is just the same post-crackdown blow-up as every other crackdown before. Refs using malicious compliance to prove they know best, while simultaneously trying to hold on to their position of power through game manipulation.

It's all power-plays now. Between the RLPA, the Refs (who had their own internal faction wars already), and the V’landys gambling gang.

The NRL is ****ed. The introduction of the 6-again was the most notable problem, but before that it was the 7-tackle restart on kicks into the in-goal. They just keep making changes to make it "more entertaining", but all it does is ruin the game for people who liked it a certain way before, all for the sake of a newer generation of punters, who have more disposable income.

I think quite a lot of the sin bins have been fair enough. I've been surprised how lazy some of the tackles have been especially amid a crackdown with no real attempt to lower the contact point and no mitigating factors. Not really sure how the NRL can go about lessening the punishment for head contact?

The issue is consistensy. It's all well and good to have a crackdown but when you're excusing some head highs because the other team already has a player in the bin then it becomes counter-productive. They're exposing the fact they're in the entertainment business and that they're not treating this like a real sport.

I feel like the crackdown ramped up this weekend, because they ****ed up the Sitili knees... that was a send off and they didn't even bin him.

The Burton one has been swept under the rug and media either gagged from talking about it or have successfully forgotten about it because he's a Sydney darling boy... either way it was 100% game management and is an example of how the refs manufacture situations.

They knew a binning there would potentially see broncos put on enough tries to kill the contest as it would've been 13v11 for about 5mins i think... so they deliberately chose not to bin him because they didn't want their faces in the papers the next day and any sort of suggestion that a ref decided the contest... completely ignoring that the dogs were head hunting the whole night.

Integrity of the game is destroyed when officiating is making decisions based on perception rather than alignment with the rules.
