2026 Pre-Season Discussion

This is the right succession plan.

What is in this for Smith? We already won it without him and if we win again, what difference has he made? If we don’t, that doesn’t reflect well on him. Such a weird appointment and has Melbourne attempt to destroy us from within written all over it.

He screwed us over for 20 years on the field, why let him do it now off?

His impact on the leadership group could be long lasting. Might not see much impact immediately but if Smith is going to make leadership his jam it could have a Luke Hodge Lions impact on the Broncos.

Luke Hodge did way more than one day a week in preseason though.

A preseason that will last about 2 weeks for guys like Patty, Payne and Staggs, due to internationals and WCC in Feb.

35yr old 300+ gamers in Reyno and Bhunt should get a lot from it though

You'll come around. Just like you have with Madge.

Hodge and Cotchin have done the same thing at the Lions.

Yeah but Cotchin came in before the Lions went on to win it. We've already won it. Hodge obviously had way more influence than just a part-time gig and you know it.

Hodge was part time and so is Crotchin, like I said they're very similar roles to Smith.

Hodge will take the role on a part-time basis from next season, having officially announced he was retiring from his storied playing career at the end of last season.

The four-time premiership player will 'offer leadership advice, mentor the young and emerging players and assist with craft work' in his new position with the Lions.

Again, after he played for us in a full time capacity as an on field leader to help us become more mature. Smith is coming in after we've won it after destroying us for 20 years and after apparently asking for Bellamy's blessing for some reason. One of these is not quite like the other. Context is REALLY important here.

It's really not, I said he could have the same impact as Hodge, which he could. He doesn't have to have played for the Broncos and again Crotchin didn't play for the Lions.

I was providing the context of Smith's role and what it may look like and I know it's very similar to the Lions model.
