AFL & NRL Asked to take mid season break during World Cup

Farina sues the Roar

Sacked Brisbane Roar coach Frank Farina is suing his former club for more than $325,000, as well as compensation for the loss of all potential future income.

In documents lodged in the Supreme Court in Brisbane, Farina alleges the Queensland Roar FC Pty Limited and the Queensland Roar FC Partnership - the companies behind the Brisbane Roar - terminated his contract in a way that significantly damaged his reputation as a football coach.

Farina appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court in November, where he was fined $500 after pleading guilty to driving with a blood alcohol limit of 0.120 on October 2.

Exactly! Drink driving with your kid in the car didn't do any harm to your reputation did it? Douche sucker.

Not just that but he was on his way to training. So turning up to training drunk apparently is what all good elite coaches do.

Also while driving their kids.

I honestly think the FFA are onto something here - the World Cup is bigger than the Olympics, and the economic benefits to this country will be MASSIVE, not just for the government/companies, but also for the everyday person such as you and me.

If NRL/AFL clubs are in such a shoddy position (financially) that they cannot afford an interruption to business, then I think it says something about the strength of our #1 and #2 codes, respectivelly.

Whats a sport that i have about 5% interest in gonna do for me? Besides stop the sport i care about for a few weeks 2 years in a row?

If you work in retail/hospitality or are reliant on tourists in anyway, shape or form then the extra income the WC will help you to no end.

However, it will likely result in higher taxes for years and years to pay for the excess expenditure required to get stadiums and infrastructure up to scratch.

Given the governments we have in power at the moment, you're probably right. [eusa_doh

FIFA demands the right to overturn Australian liquor laws under a push by global soccer chiefs to seize control of our cities if we host the World Cup.

The move to override existing local liquor laws - at a time when cities are fighting alcohol-fuelled violence - is contained in the contract cities trying to woo the world's biggest sporting carnival in 2018 or 2022 must sign, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph reports.

It includes demands that participating cities, which will probably include Brisbane, close any road organisers wanted, cut promotion of other major sporting events, remove rival advertising from city streets and ban other cultural events, like concerts

Really punching above their weight on this one.

Does anyone else think that FIFA is just a cover for the modern nazi movement? Their demands are ridiculous

Sounds like they are afraid of any kind of competition for people's dollars - banning all other sporting and cultural events is ridiculous.

FIFA has no place in this country. Would the yanks do this for them?

America hosted the tournament in 94, but I don't know the story behind FIFAs policy and how America adjusted for it or whether it was actually different back then.

Given the DT's high-quality journalism, I reckon that is full of arse. That did not happen for Germany 2006.

Finally the Federal Government does something useful.

RIVAL football codes will receive Government guarantees that they can continue their seasons uninterrupted if Australia wins the right to host soccer's World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

The Daily Telegraph reports assurances from the Rudd Government remove the fear that the AFL, NRL and Super Rugby competitions would have to be suspended - or even cancelled - during a World Cup hosted here.

The Government sweetener also includes a multimillion-dollar package for the rival codes to compensate for switching their games to non-World Cup stadiums.

The Federal Government will include the guarantee that the seasons won't have to be suspended in an agreement that will bind all codes into supporting the bid - with the Government prepared to sign it.

That and compensation for lost revenue have been the major issues confronting the taskforce charged with securing agreement from the other codes.
