Ashes Discussion

Time for a late night rant.... because why not??

Is it only the garbage Australian media that just blatantly push agendas or is it every western media corp in the world that is looking for clicks??

Haven't bothered to read the below article, but saw it and the use of 'Golden Boy' to automatically trigger a hit piece.

I wasn't quite sure if it was on Marnus (who Warne loves to hate because he moves around too much... even though he loves Smith)... until I read Marsh and realised it was about Cam Green.

I mean Green is our answer to Ben Stokes and already has a better average than Marsh in tests and shield cricket, but no Aust media have decided that because Mitch "I've already failed at tests 50 odd times" Marsh scored some runs in a couple T20 matches that he should start to come into consideration because Green has had a couple low scores.

I'm just wondering if this happen in all western media (USA, England, etc.) or is it just in Aust??

When I was younger I watched a fair chunk of ESPN and got into American sports... pretty well through video games (Madden, NBA, NHL, etc,), but it was the tactical analysis from ESPN that made me interested in the sport in the first place... I had no idea what was happening in the sport to begin with but that sort of coverage tweaked my interest.

I know tall poppy syndrome is legit, but Green is our answer to a genuine all rounder in I don't know how long (if ever) and should be given massive leeway to find his way in test cricket (just like Michael Clarke was), but nah let's dump a heap of pressure on him just to get some clicks....

He's a good bat (avg's 50 in shield), bowls at 140km/h, is tall and gets bounce and swing.... he's as much of a slam dunk as is possible in cricket...IF he's allowed to develop correctly, but nah let's heap a ton of pressure on him to see if he fails....

Why is it (other than clicks) that Aust media have constant vendettas against certain players, but then let others off?

I do think Green needs to be given as much red-ball as possible if he’s going to fulfill his number 6 role properly. So perhaps that means missing a tour here or there in the next year or two and playing Shield or County instead, playing 5-10 shield games rather than say 4 tests in the same time.

Another low score and the calls will grow louder. At the moment we’re beating up on England a bit and can carry his stats so far, but he doesn’t want to get to the 15-20 test mark and still averaging ~20-25 and getting out as badly as he has lately

The article was pretty fair, it has Waugh and O’Keefe analysing Green technical flaw and then discussing alternatives if it continues and how he can improve.

Marsh was raised by D. Martyn.

Green is the golden boy of Australian cricket who surely has a long, bright future ahead of him – but he risks opening the door to competitors in the short term should he not be able to overcome the issue.

Waugh acknowledges Marsh.

Waugh doesn’t share that view, but agrees that Marsh isn’t entirely out of contention to play against England this series.
“I suppose Mitch Marsh is lurking around the corner,” Waugh said. “But I think Australia has invested heavily in Cameron Green.
“He bowled beautifully at the Gabba. I think he’s a genuine all-rounder and gives you great balance.

“I think while Mitch Marsh is spoken about, I think Cameron Green will get a lot of chances this summer.
“But for his own good and his own career he’ll want to start turning his form around with the bat. I mean, he’s made runs in Sheffield Shield cricket this year but he’s been out LBW three times, so he needs to think about it, but not burden himself with it. It’s a bit of a juggling act.”

It's pretty standard Australian cricket mid Test writing- two players do the heavy lifting with some technical stuff and throw up an alternative should it continue.

I don't think there is anything wrong with anything that is written, anytime you get out the same way four games in a row it should be noticed and written about if you're good at your job.

People also need to accept that an all rounder will very rarely do both well in a game. Green bowled well at the 'Gabba but is batting terribly at the moment.

He has only batted twice for too failures. Lets see how he goes in the next few tests. I would bat him at 7 after Carey. His bowling has been good. Last summer he bowled sparingly due to injury and explains the time taken to get his first wicket. Marsh is certainly peaking too and could also be picked at some stage but Green does not deserve to lose his place atm.

If Green can't bat at 6, he shouldn't be in the team. He has had 2 innings, he will be given the entire series. If we get to a point of picking him to bat 7, I'd go with Neser ahead of him for that role.

They’re being too cute. Left them out in Brisbane so they could dominate the D/N Test then bowl too short anyway.

Play a spinner in Brisbane then drop him for Adelaide where he could have an impact.

Finger spinners in Australia are a lost cause but if you’re going to play them then surely Adelaide.

1998 Such was the last English spinner to get more than 10 wickets at less than 35.

Ali five at 115
Crane one at 193
Dawson five at 80
Giles nine at 50
Panasar 13 at 48
Tuffnell 19 at 41
Croft two at 68

Lyon 204 wickets at 33 in Australia so we have a massive advantage over England already.
Haven't you heard? Lyon sucks and finger spin doesn't work.

I'd love to know how Renshaw is going... behind the scenes that is.

Thought I heard that he still wants to be an opener, but I believe he's been batting down the order in limited overs cricket... not sure how far down he's batting in shield though??

When he first came in his temperament was excellent and could play spin very well for an opener... before the Aust media destroyed his mindset / confidence he was an opener that knew exactly where his off stump was (seeing off the new ball... i.e. the opener's main job!), proficient scorer through leg and off his pads if the pace bowlers strayed, and could play spin once he had seen off the new ball.....

but "nah nah nah ... he needs to learn how to score through the offside because he can't keep up with Warner and is stifling him." ... and now all of a sudden he has become a nicker outside off

Unfortunately I think he has now done a full 180 and somewhat turned his attention to short form cricket in order to make a career out of the T20 circuit... so I'm not sure how easily he could revert to being that patient scoring opener.

He's a bit more mature now, and Cricket Aust could do worse than give him some assurances that if he can get back to being that patient player and fix his game outside off, then I'm sure he could be an answer at the opening position.
Joe Burns has one openers spot for Qld, Bryce Street who just scored a ton for Aus A is the other opener .
So how is Renshaw gonna get a run at opening ?

Renshaw just hasn’t got runs, it’s as simple as that. Been dropped from the Queensland and struggled.

He really hasn’t preformed since 17/18.

17/18- 804 runs with three 100.
18/19- 394 runs with 0 100.
19/20- 182 runs with 0 100- dropped in February after 29 innings without 100.
20/21- 500 runs with 2 100
21/22- 318 runs with 1 100

I think naming him for Australia A shows he’s still supported but he hasn’t returned that support with runs for Queensland.

Lyon at home 204 wickets at 32

Every other spinner over that time here 180 wickets at 63.

How long before a team doesn’t even bring a spinner here?

I saw another interesting stat the other day on cricinfo about Harris.

He averages 63 on suburban grounds and 33 on the big test grounds. Really confirms he just isn’t up to standard.

I think the travelling spinners struggle so much here because their pace attacks are usually getting decimated by batsmen like Ponting, Smith, Clarke, Hussey, Hayden, Gilchrist etc. Aside from the recent India side that came out, the English team in 2010/11 and RSA in 2016/17, I can't think of many teams that have really had parity with our pack attack.

Of those 3 sides, if you were to pull out the spinners from those tours:
England 2010/11 - Swann 15 wickets @ 39.80 v. Doherty 3 wickets @102
RSA 2016/17 - Maharaj 4 wickets @ 40.50 v. Lyon 6 wickets @ 57.66
India 2020/21 - Ashwin 12 wickets @ 28.83 v. Lyon 9 wickets @ 55.11

Aside from Ashwin, the numbers aren't impressive but they do show travelling spinners have had the better of their Australian counterparts when the pace attacks have also had success.

The bottom line is don't bring out a rubbish pace attack to Aus and expect to do well.
