Ben Hunt's field goal woes

If he lived up to the extremely high expectations some people have on here with his form, we wont get beaten what so ever by any team.

MOTM every game. Every kick perfect. Every run a tackle break. Every pass a try assist. Every field goal nailed. Maybe then he'll be decent.

Not only has Ben Hunt failed to kick a field goal in the NRL, he never managed to kick one in his time in the NYC or Queensland Cup (where he played for Norths in 2009 and Comets in 2011). In fact, it took the Brisbane Broncos U20s side five seasons to kick their first field goal with utility Chris Binge nailing one to give Brisbane a 29-22 victory over the Manly Sea Eagles in Round 25, 2012.

It's alarming and in a sense typifies Hunt's chaotic nature on the field.

Life is like a Ben Hunt performance, you never know what you're going to get.

Except for no field goals.

We already had that game lost when our young forwards struggled against an enthusiastic Tigers pack playing well above their pay grade. Perhaps our youngsters were believing in the pre-game odds or were taken by surprise, but they definitely didn't provide the right platform for Hunt and Milf to do much.

Joe Offa pretty much says that in today's Courier Mail. How many times was Hunt forced to kick from well within our own 40mtrs..?

Having said that, and the Tigers definitely deserved to win, that we came so close to knocking it into Golden Point and lost the plot was really frustrating to watch. All Blair had to do was run a few meters and get a quick play of the ball - we were right in front on the 4th tackle FFS!!

It was disappointing for Blair to offload to Hunt, it was equally stupid for Hunt to run out wide himself looking for a Roberts miracle, rather than handing off to a forward to take the tackle.

As people have already pointed out - it wasn't Hunt's ability to kick field goals that was the problem, it was were he took it from and the pressure he was under.

I would bet 4 times out of 5 he would have knocked it through from straight in front, 25 meters back with plenty of cover.

Blair didn't offload to Hunt.

He passed it to Wallace.

In light of Big Pete's confirmation that Ben Hunt has never kicked a field goal in his career(!) I'd suggest you hold off on placing any bets involving Ben Hunt kicking a field goal.

Hunt's positional play and inability to set up for the FG might be a factor in his inability to kick field goals but there's no evidence, zilch, that Hunt can actually kick a field goal under 'the right' circumstances... we've only ever seen him muff them. I don't want this to degenerate into the Ben Hunt is overrated thread but my point is Hunt's inability to kick a field goal is something that needs to be addressed - either he practices harder or the Broncos make a strategic decision for Milford to take all their field goals, as I doubt there's ever been a halfback with a worse FG success rate.

I'm still astonished Hunt rather than Milf attempted the FG vs the Tigers... sure Milford missed a sitter last week but he's proved he can hit them consistently, unlike Hunt who consistently misses.

Kevin Walters never kicked a field goal. It's not the be all and end all. Milf has shown he should be first choice in those situations. It'd be nice if they were both guns, but what are you gonna do? Except train for those moments, which comes down to Bennett, not Hunt.

It might help if we had stats on how many hunt has attempted.

There's been a few. I know he took a few shots last year.

Off the top of my head, I would say about 10. I seriously can't remember many.

Who cares about his FG kicking ability, that isn't important. In some teams, that's left up to the fullbacks, or hookers, why should Hunt have the sole responsibility of being an FG taker? What IS important, is identifying who is the best FG kicker, and setting them up to take the shot, in our team that should be Milford every time.

I've watched countless games where top class players fluff every FG attempt they take. It's not an easy task, guys like Thurston just make it look easy. It's not like Hunt has had many attempts, it's just that with FGs, it's hugely noticeable with each miss because it's a game defining moment usually. If Kahu kicked better this week and last, we wouldn't have had to kick for a point to stay in the game.

Also, I don't think NYC stats are that important, seeing as most games are pretty high scoring affairs where a field goal isn't usually the difference. It's only with the NRL and the referees artificially making each game a tight affair that it's become so important.

I agree....it should be Milford taking fg's each and every time. He's a much better striker of the ball than Ben Hunt.

Given the fact that Hunt hasn't attempted any FG's this year, I would assume that the strategic decision had already been made. Seems they forgot to tell Milford he needs to actually put himself in the right position.

Sometimes, what goes on in Milf's head is as much a mystery as a worry

Sezer has missed five this year alone, here's how the rest stack up in 2016:

Hodkinson, Johnson, Roberts, Soward and Williams have missed three a piece.

Hastings, Marshall, Milford and Moses with two missed.

Of all of those only Milford (4), Hastings (1) and Williams (1) have successfully kicked them.

Field goals by nature are chaotic, often happening in the dying stages of a game or golden point where pressure is high and the defence is onto it.

Milf has slotted more than those other dudes because he's taken two or three 'for practice' ie when the game was already won.
