Sam Thaiday did a double-take when he looked to see who was on his outside shoulder and Jordan Kahu is coming to terms with job-sharing with his boyhood idol, but how Benji Marshall fits into the Broncos set-up in 2017 remains a mystery.

With the full contingent all now back in training the ballwork sessions run by the Broncos coaching staff on Monday morning gave a few insights into the structure of the side this year just three weeks out from the Downer NRL Auckland Nines.

Although only nine of his 255 career NRL matches have been played anywhere outside the halves, Marshall spent Monday's session switching between left centre and fullback with Thaiday revealing he has also spent time training at dummy-half.

With Kodi Nikorima (shoulder) pushing to be fit in time for Round 1 the likely scenario for Marshall to line up against the Sharks would be a spot on the interchange bench and Thaiday admits that it was odd to have the former Tiger and Dragon looming up on his outside.

"It is a bit weird," Thaiday said. "He's been bouncing into a few different positions as well, playing a bit of dummy-half, a bit of centre, jumps into the halves as well so who knows where we'll use him this year.

"He's great to have around the club; it's good to have another old boy around. We're a dying breed at the moment," added Thaiday, with Marshall pipping him by four months as the oldest player at the club in 2017.

Kahu's path to the NRL mirrored that of Marshall having come through the famed Keebra Park High School program on the Gold Coast and was heavily influenced by the former Kiwi captain's emergence.

With Tom Opacic still nursing two shoulder reconstructions back to full health Kahu is the leading contender to fill the left centre vacancy created by the retirement of Jack Reed but said Marshall would make a good fist of any position he was thrust into.

"I think he could play anywhere if he wanted to," said Kahu.

"I've known 'Benj' for a while now so it's good to see his face at training and he's a bit of a character and training really well.

"He's right up there in the fitness and all those sorts of things and teaching the young boys a fair bit as well.

"Obviously he had a similar path [to the NRL]. He started at Keebra Park and every kid that goes to Keebra Park kind of idolises Benji Marshall because he started all of that with all the Kiwi boys going through there and making it to the NRL.

"He's had a fair few injuries so to see him still running around at 43 – I think he is now – is good and it's a blessing to have him here."

Due to turn 32 next month, Marshall played 16 games for the Dragons in 2015 before being thrown a career lifeline by Broncos coach Wayne Bennett.

Given his bargain-basement price he was an experienced insurance policy too good to pass up with very little back-up for halves Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt on the roster, either of whom could be called up for Origin football this year.

Bennett keeping everyone guessing.

He would already have a pretty good idea on where he is going to play Marshall.

Training on an edge, in the middle and out the back?

Sounds like he's coming off the bench with a roving commission to me. Probably our best option to be honest. Not sure whether he's got the kind of composure /control we would want in the halves, or the familiarity/reliability at centre.

Off the bench he's got a good balance of instinct and experience. Maybe not as dynamic and quick off the mark as Kodi but he's got the benefit of experience and a diverse kicking game. Could work.

you can tell its offseason. not sure what the mystery is here. This is exactly as expected, he is training to fill a utility role, if he's required in the 17.

I have absolutely no doubt that Bennett knew exactly where and how he planned to play Benji before he even made the offer

I guess it'll just come down to whether or not benji shows a little more spark or skill set at centre compared to kahu (which i think he does, especially match experience and kicking game)

I love kahu as a player. Love him in every position. But i can see benji playing a similar role to hodges did at the back end of his career

He can't tackle. I can't see him playing in the centres being anything but a disaster.

I remember the same being said about Roberts. I remember the same being said about Ash Taylor.

Hello!! Tackling can be done differently by different coaches at different clubs. I have full belief that if his defence was an issue at the broncos in preseason, we have the right personal to fix that element of his game and get him up to scratch.

He's been brought to the Broncos as a specialist goal kicker.

Seriously. The guy is in his 30's and has never been any good at tackling. That is hardly going to change now. Don't go comparing James Roberts or Ash Taylor to him either. They don't relate at all.

How do they not... everyone said ash taylor would be a turnstile.. he wasn't. Roberts had pretty decent defence last year apart from a few games where he was off his game (we all know why he was)

Show me proof that he can't defend at centre right now during this preseason... since bennett is a big believer in defence first, i highly doubt he'll put him there if you're right

Is it possible Bennett spent 100K to mess with the media so they obsess over it taking focus away from the other players and how the team working on a new top secret game plan? Sounds insane or sounds like Bennett?

Bennett doesn't care at all what the media thinks. So yeah, probably not.[emoji14]He's just an insanely great buy

The proof is Benji being in the the league for 10 years and being a liability in defence. That ain't going to change now. I'll happily eat my words if Benji is a revelation in the centres and somehow becomes competent enough to defend there.

Exactly!

People think that because he is now under Wayne he will no longer pass the ball to the crowd or kick the ball out on the full on the 5th tackle and miss 5 or 6 tackles per game.

He will bring enthusiasm and experience but being experienced at missing a lot of tackles is not really adding value.

I too will sit down to lunch with you for that word-eating-fest but I think it is the majority who are blindly now all of a sudden Benji fans that will be the ones enjoying a smorgasbord of errors.

Bring it on. I just trust bennett and trust marshal when they say those errors and lack of form can be attributed to both the pressure of being the main playmaker and being unhappy. By coming to the Broncos, he's been inspired to again be a running player, he's rediscovering his love for the game and will probably rediscover his talent.

Defence is also down to attitude. If he was unhappy where he was, that can easily attribute to a low engagement and in turn poor tackling technique.

Adam Blair is a good example here of how a change of club and outlook can turn a career around

I don't think anyone is championing Benji as a revelation in the starting first string side. Not that I've noticed.

Some (myself included) consider him a handy pick up for minimal coin who will provide depth cover and /or versatility off the bench.

I don't expect him to miraculously fix his defence or completely weed the errors out if his game. I do expect we will employ him in such a fashion that we can minimise the extent it will be exposed though.

Well said Rally Towel, the only real things that made signing Marshall attractive for most is the minimal contract cost, experience and depth positional/utility options(and you need more then just one halves option if something happens there during the season). From the get go I don't expect him to make a dramatic improvement defensively, there is potential to drop his error rate but realistically that is something he would have to work hard on to do so. I'm willing to give the bloke a go but as far as I'm concerned his position in the regular 17 should be decided on effort, performance and what is best for the side.
