Don't understand the Herbie hate tonight. Other than the sin bin I can't think of anything he did wrong. Also made a thousand metres while the rest of the team went backwards.
He made a heap of meters because he is a selfish player who doesn't pass the ball. When he made them linebreaks he should look for support from his team. Herbie never looks for a pass or possibly the little grubber in behind like we see from nearly every other back in the NRL. The meters are all well and good but meters on paper is no where near as good as points on the board.

He’s just a kid
Is he able to play juniors?

I think Cobbo was good last night. But using someone's age to defend them is the weakest argument possible. If you are a professional sportsman being paid to do a job, age means nothing.

Just about being in objective and fair in assessing players. Doesn’t have to be all negative or positive
You’d love what I have to say about him then. Usually it’s pretty positive, just had to point out some flaws for a few weeks while others were hyping him up for his hit ups but forgetting everything else he did.

Also last night on his kick returns he often decided to turn into their forwards instead of the back or half standing in front of him

Won’t get any arguments from me that he has plenty to work on

Not sure why so many people thought Herbie had a bad game tonight. Admittedly I watched it live from the ground, and won't torture myself by watching the replay. But he was a constant threat all night (it also looked like a complete BS sin bin)

3 - Reyno
2 - Herbie
1 - Billy, because at least while he was on the floodgates remained close 😝

Herbie is normally great but in this game, he:
- Got sent to the bin for a ridiculous trip
- Dropped a ball that led directly to a Souths try
- Got SMASHED by his opposite number
- Made several crucial errors
- Got caught out defensively several times

Don't get me wrong, he really tried and sometimes these games just happen, so happy to write this one off as just one of those nights but he was really made to look second rate by Graham. In fairness to Herbie, he was massively let down defensively by Madden on his inside, so with Mam there, I don't think Graham has such an easy time of it.

Graham's first try was off a grubber, the second he ran straight through Madden and Capewell, not Herbie, and the third he wasn't even on the field for. The dropped kick was unfortunate, but it's an absolute lottery when the opposition are allowed to jump into you with no intention of catching the ball.

Yes, his opposite number had a good game, but that doesn't automatically make his game bad (apart from the sin bin, obviously).

Traits that are perfectly suited to the wing.

Herbie confirmed he is a gun winger elevated to centre, rather than a gun fullback being relegated to centre. The jury is still out on what Selwyn is.

That said, it's still possible the Herbie/Jesse combo might be better than switching them around.

I 100% agree with you and Herbie would make a top notch winger but it will never happen. Herbie will never wear the 1 on his back while he's with us or while at dolphins now with Hammers signing.

Herbie is pretty predictable: nine times out of ten he will do his little Barney Rubble step, and head back infield, whether he receives the ball at the end of a movement or from a kick. In the former, he will take on the sliding defence, usually beat his opposite centre but then face a wall of middles waiting for him. And that will be the end of the move. In the process he'll eat up a ton of metres but snuff out the momentum. His running metres stats will always look great.

If Herbie gets the ball 10 metres out, his go-to tactic can result in a try, but he does the same 30 metres out and it almost always ends the same way. Capewell has made a meal ticket of the same move, but he's just as likely to pass it on, and his passing game is one of the best in the NRL. He doesn't tend to tuck it and hog unless he's close to the line. Walsh holds the ball with both hands, out in front. You don't know which way he's going to go next.

The team compensates by cutting Herbie out of most backline plays - sending it directly to the wing (kick, cut out, harbour bridge, whatever) - which is working a treat, when it comes off. When it doesn't it's called a Hail Mary.

Anyone in denial of Herbie's reticence to pass need merely look at his stats in this game (he has fewer receipts because he was binned for 10 minutes):

Campbell Graham: 20 receipts, 7 passes, 3 tries
Isiah Tass: 19 receipts, 11 passes, 0 tries
Kotoni Staggs: 21 receipts, 8 passes, 0 tries
Herbie Farnworth: 17 receipts, 1 pass, 0 tries

Herbie rucks the ball out of the 40 . Into the teeth of the opposition forwards . You want him to pass in that situation ?
Kotoni tried that rubbish and was very fortunate Burgess knocked on trying to pilfer the ball on the ground .

Herbie has been consistently our best outside back this year and does a mountain of work, he is fine where he is, when ever we needed to get a pass out to the wing it's generally happened, and as stated before a cutout pass is much more effective, it's not a hail mary especially if it's from Walsh because it's only generally cutting 1 player.

Herbie without doubt is a powerful running centre with so much potential and a great career ahead of him. Such clubs as Storms, Souths, Roosters and the master himself Wayne endorse this by attempting to sign or having signed him. Since 19 years of age , Herbie has toughed it out in a young Broncos team which is gaining and developing in experience each game. Along this journey there may be highs and lows for each and every playing member of the team. Being an edge player, especially centre, you are out in the wilds, no man's land at times, you are reliant on the responsive actions of the players inside of you , their movements and decision making process throughout the game has a great bearing on how you actually respond and react. In this game alone there were two positional changes which had a bearing on Herbie's edge, yet Herbie still maintained a high 92%.3 tackle efficiency compared to Graham's 79.1%. When we speak about carries and meters, quite a lot of Herbie's receipts and carries are from a ruck area attack, either 1st or 2nd get out trouble, red area, tough hard meters carries , which Herbie relentlessly carries out in a very determined and brave manner. The 80 post contact meters Herbie gained in this game compared to Graham's 151m and 54 post contact meters having 4 ball receipts less than Graham and ten minutes less play time, could be converted into many different summaries as to who had the more influential game with regards to work effic and stats . The Souths couldn't contain Herbie in his attacking runs, even the naked eye could see this. When a member of this site clearly states in one of their posts how they discredit stats, then in another post produce stats as a means of discrediting a player. The wise ones of us can constantly read into this. What would Herbie have done with the good ball Graham received in order to score his tries? without doubt he would have finished them in a clinical manner giving as usual his all. When you receive the ball in limited space on the edge, especially if your feeders are running in a lateral direction and entering into your space, it becomes a reactive instinct to automatically attempt to try and find space yourself, you have a variety of options, if you attack the edge in such limited space you place yourself and fellow players in a more vulnerable attacking position. It all depends on the situation at the time and the circumstances. Like most of our young players Herbie will evolve and evolve. We have an exciting young team which is developing all the time. Of course there are certain areas they need to improve upon, this will come in time, after all Rome wasn't built in a day. As long as the effort is there and the boys keep their spirits up and working away, what more can we ask for? We should be proud and supportive of each and everyone.
