NEWS Big boots to fill for deputy Duffy in Cowboys derby debut

Former Cowboys halfback Tom Duffy will make his Broncos debut in his appearance of the year, deputising for injured skipper Adam Reynolds in the Round 6 derby against North Queensland.

Reynolds suffered a groin injury in last week’s match against the Titans – but had hoped to be fit to play and was named by the club to line up alongside Ezra Mam on ‘Team List Tuesday’.

However, while he was able to run, kicking proved an issue, handing the Townsville Centrals Rugby League club junior his chance to impress against his former club.

“Tommy will get his opportunity,” coach Michael Maguire said at the captains run media conference.

“Reyno kicked the ball and felt it probably wasn't right.

“He did all the running. He was okay with that, but he just felt the kicking part was something that wasn't where it needed to be. So we're fortunate to have Tommy ready to go.

“I'm really looking forward to seeing him get his opportunity.

“He’s fitted in really well. He came in on day one, ripped into the pre-season and he's earning everything he's doing.

“He's been able to sort of get himself around Reyno and Hunty [Ben Hunt] and those guys with experience and draw from that.

“We're all excited for Tommy because he deserves it.”

With not only Reynolds, but also utility Hunt and fullback Reece Walsh, sidelined with injury, the Broncos have had to shuffle the backs and the spine, calling in more reinforcements for the derby clash.

Last week, Jesse Arthars made his first NRL appearance since Round 27 last year and stepped in at fullback after Walsh suffered a fracture cheekbone just before the halftime break and has been named to retain the role.

Like Duffy, Arthars started the season playing in the Hostplus Cup with Souths Logan Magpies, as has hooker Blake Mozer, who has been named in 14 in place of Hunt.

“He’s just selfless and a great man, Jess, he just fits in wherever,” Maguire said.

“He’ll go out and work his backside off for his team-mates.

“I'm very confident using Moze, he's been very patient, but you've got to remember his career over the last two years has been hampered with a fair bit of injury along the way.

“So sometimes you can't get ahead as you like, but he's been patient and he's built his body up, so he's in really good shape at the moment.

“Looking forward to getting him out there when the time's right as well.”

As for playing their third Queensland derby in as many weeks, Maguire said the match against the Cowboys remained a special rivalry and a chance to continue improving their game.

“I've watched them for years, they're always great games,” Maguire said.

“We're pretty determined to keep building on what we're doing.

“We’re not happy with everything we're doing. We're chasing different parts of what we need to be better at.”

Duffy just has to do what he's been doing for four games for Souths, use his pass and kicking game to get it to the right spot and create opportunities. He's played smart football.

Excluding that short drop out I think he's taken the right option every time Souths have needed it. His judgement of situations has been outstanding, and I would say is at least on par with 2024.

Against the Bears down 28-6 with 24 minutes to go he identified passing and kicking isn't going to be enough to make up the gap and started running and got Souths a 28-28 draw.

He ran 17 times in that Bears game, Wynnum 7, Norths 8, Jets 8.

The diversity of the chances he creates has always stood out to me since Meninga and Colts.

That Bears comeback to draw- long pass Mano-Le-Mamea try, short kick Walters try, high kick Owen try, and long pass Mano-Le-Mamea- but he runs and turns Coburn under which Bears bite on and come in.

He's been influencing Souths results not just creating the tries, but he makes sure they go up in 6's too with 17/19 goals.

I think this stint in NRL will be different, he's at 7, he's settled and not moving around he's played 6, 7 and bench in six games at the Cowboys.

Duffy's mid-range bomb he's hit perfectly for Souths, doesn't try to Burton it just gives enough time for chases and enough height everyone arrives at once; it's really a strong chip kick will bring a try tonight. He runs towards the try line and just puts it halfway between the corner and posts- Staggs will score.

Do you think he will take over goal kicking duties tonight?
Madge has already confirmed he will.

He's a career >80% kicker.

Staggs is more of a 75% kicker or lower and his technique looks awful... stabs at it and relies on hooking it.

It's like if someone has a slice on the golf course so they aim way left to bring it back to the fairway... theyre just banking on the curve being consistent rather than controlling the shot

Do you think he will take over goal kicking duties tonight?

He's kicking tonight for sure.

He's had a strange goal kicking career, did it for Townsville Meninga side 2021- 33/44 goals and they made the Grand Final.

Then didn't do it for Townsville Colts in 22; Dylan White did it all and they made the Grand Final and won.

Then when he got to Cup, he's always done it. 70 goals in 23, 120 goals over his time at the Pride and now 17 goals for Souths- has 462 points now from 54 Cup games.

Didn't kick at Cowboys, 1/2 in six games but wasn't a lot of tries to convert. They lost 5 of his 6 games.
