DARIUS Boyd is fast emerging as the favourite to be next Broncos captain after leading them to a much-needed victory on Saturday night.

The star fullback helped turn around Brisbane’s 2016 fortunes with a 30-10 win over the Rabbitohs in his debut as skipper.

Boyd has led the Broncos in trials but was given the responsibility with regular skipper Corey Parker suspended last weekend.

The 29-year-old was inspirational in his performance, which came just three days after Origin III, putting on an attacking masterclass with two try assists, two linebreak assists and 11 runs for 85m.

Coach Wayne Bennett confirmed that Boyd was a leading contender for the role once Parker retires at season’s end.

And his teammates are backing the move, with Jarrod Wallace revealing he already views Boyd as a leader.

Wallace admires the way the former Knight and Dragon has overcome plenty of obstacles to become a mentor.

“Whenever we’re on the field, he’s always a real leader for us,” Wallace said.

“He’s always the one talking from the back, he always acts like he’s part captain.

“Cozza has the C next to his name and he’s the rightful captain (this year) but when Darbs (Boyd) is there, he’s a real leader for us as well.”

Boyd was a favourite for the skipper role in the lead-up to this season, with the likes of Justin Hodges and Bennett endorsing him, before the job went to Parker.

The other major contender to lead next year is Adam Blair, with fellow veteran forward Sam Thaiday ruling himself out.

Wallace said Boyd, who went through a well-documented battle with depression, is already someone players feel they can turn to whenever they are down on confidence.

“If Wayne was to give Darbs that opportunity, I don’t think he would let us down,” Wallace said.

“Over the last couple of years, he’s really come out of his shell and is playing outstanding.

“A lot of the boys, if they’re ever down, they would always go to him. He’s a very approachable guy and always happy to talk to you about it.”

Boyd said after Saturday’s match it was an “honour” to have played as Broncos’ captain.

Yep Boyd gets my vote as well

He deserves a massive amount of credit for turning his life around.

And it is showing on the footy field. Not only in his individual performances but in the direction and leadership he is providing for his teammates.

I thought he was best choice for this year. Hope he is our skipper next year.

He's the best option and I hope he gets the gig.

The best thing to me is that although he is basically the only option all things considered, he is a great option as he has all the attributes of a great leader. What a great turn around of his life and what a wonderful role model for others that they can turn their life around he has become.
