Brisbane Bombers NRL Bid

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

it goes hand in hand, the underperformance of the broncos at the moment and the untapped saturation of the brisbane market opens up the need that people like gyngell have been crying for.

like all startup operations, the goal won't be to conquer rome from day 1. it is to take up the natural market that is there as its foundation and work co-operatively with the broncos to penetrate the market that the broncos clearly can't by themselves at the moment (and for a long time)

Just stop with the calls mate, your on BroncosHQ so show some respect.

Competitiveness particularly early on is extremely vital in South East Queensland for a side to even survive otherwise the crowds will drop off quick and then the support, sponsers etc which has been proven to be true from history. It's no easy feat that is often made out to be, underestimating the competition for sponsers etc because they limit their perspective to it only being the Broncos which isn't the case and even the Titans are facing real issues off the field for their future that need to be addressed, they got a real tough fight with the way The Suns have gone here on the coast and unlike the Suns they don't have the sort of support the AFL gives them to develop, they may have done better this season, but it didn't reflect on their crowd figures and its only dropped off as the seasons have gone on.

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

I'll move this to league chat, and rename it, there is nothing official about a 'team' that isn't official. The only reason we will see the Bombers is because what Nine wants, Nine gets.

On topic, don't attack the bloke because he wants to see them included.

Agreed but he certainly could have announced himself less antagonistically, you'd have to agree.

I've come around to the idea of a second brisbane team. If it means less Friday night games for the Broncos then I'm all for it.

Who was the genius who thought it was a good idea to steal the emblem of an iconic australian club and incorporating the initials of their potential cross town rivals who are also an iconic sporting brand. The bid should be rejected on that basis alone.

Different footy clubs and different codes have shared team names before

AFL - Collingwood Magpies, NRL - Western Suburbs Magpies
AFL - West Coast Eagles, NRL - Northern Eagles
AFL - Brisbane Bears, - NRL - North Sydney Bears
AFL - North Melbourne Kangaroos, NRL - National team is called the Kangaroos
AFL - Richmond Tigers, NRL - Balmain Tigers and Wests Tigers

Do agree that the Bombers name isn't original and doesn't relate to the Brisbane and Queensland market in any way.

I see what you're saying , but the name the bombers is iconic and unusual. All of the clubs you've noted with the exception of the weagles have been around since, you know before media, this just seems like a dumb choice, and a confusing one considering the idea would be to build a brand. Name me two teams in the same city who share the name of the city in their title. Just lazy.

Re: Official Brisbane Bombers thread

Personally If I had to base a 2nd Brisbane team I would set them at QE2 and put temporary seating on the race track and behind the dead ball line on game day and give them the name of a past Brisbane team (Diehards came to mind).

1: The Brisbane river being the boundary like it was during the Crushers days making it a Northside V Southside rivalry
2: A name of a Brisbane local team would connect with Brisbane people a lot more and make the brand more appealing.
I hate it when this is brought up. The Broncos are not a North Brisbane side.

A Perth team would probably take more Friday night slots than a second Brisbane team, seeing as it would allow two live games to be broadcast.

we don't have our own site yet, so this will do.

cam smith inaugral captain 2015

what are your thoughts on this bid?

Out of interest, who do you currently support?

Cameron Smith as a player coach would be an excellent platform for a team to launch from, but it will still be a massive task to establish a second team in this city, IMO.

For me, the league should be expanded elsewhere.

Elsewhere he's said he's a Manly supporter...

Oh.. I was expecting a club with a bitter history with the Broncos. Then again, any league fan who lives in Brisbane and doesn't support the Broncos seems to be extremely butthurt about anything Bronco related.

Well, this happy meeting of fellow league fans has gone well...

I know BB2015 doesn't speak for the bid team, or even the majority of the potential fans, but if they're going to even have a chance they'll be better off not dumping on the history of the Broncos. The fact that we've missed the finals in 2 of the last 4 season (not 2/3 Mr Accurate) is a massive insult to the fans, but if they base the groundwork on the fact that they see the Broncos continue to fade while the Bombers take over the mantle as top team, it'll all end in tears. They'll do much better to play the underdog tag, because people who hate the Broncos hate their perceived snooty attitude and arrogant expectation of success.

Well said. Just look at how the Titans have gone with trying to proclaim themselves as "Queensland's best team" after their 2010 performance...what have they done since?

If your sole objective is to be better than the Broncos, you will fail. Don't define yourself based on what someone else has done.

Is there really a critical mass of Broncos-haters in Brisbane to support another club?

Surely ex-pats have their own Sydney teams that they follow and are happy to attend once a year when their club plays at Suncorp.

I wouldn't go to Bombers games if I was a Broncos member/fan, and not out of spite.

I doubt they'd steal existing Broncos fans, even if the Broncos are tanking.

Well well well. What a "surprise" to see so many well wishes from bronco diehards.

It's easier to respond generally here, the Crushers although having nothing to do with the Bombers bid, were a massive success in their early days posting crowds well over 25k regularly. It was only superleague that brought their undoing. This is enough proof that there is enough local interest to support 2 teams, regardless how you bronco fans want to spin their demise.

15 years on, the brisbane market has grown larger and wider, yet the broncos attendances and member counts has not risen to match it's exclusive demographic growth. Because of this the Broncos have every reason to co-operate with a rival local side, in a similar way that the Rabbitohs or the Bulldogs together with the Roosters collaborate in their marketing of their rivalies to achieve record numbers for both clubs.

The Bombers use of the Broncos brand as a strategy is different to the Titans as a key part of the Bombers bid is to create that local rivalry that is needed in Brisbane. In summary competition is a good thing, don't be a afraid of it. If you are you are only fearing what you have to lose.

But the question remains - where are they going to draw their members and regular punters from? Disgruntled Broncos members/supporters, other club supporters, people who at the moment have no interest in NRL?

Not to mention 15 years ago there was no support for the Roar or the lions or the Titans. Business plan Fail.
