Broncos on track to re-sign Oates

October 15, 2018

Corey Oates is one of a trio of big-name, off-contract stars the Broncos are keen to re-sign, with club powerbrokers confident the representative winger's club future will be in Brisbane.

Oates and forwards Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai jnr remain the off-contract stars the Broncos are yet to wrap up beyond this season.

Oates has only linked with leading player manager George Mimis in the last six weeks and negotiations with Broncos CEO Paul White are on track.

Oates was the club's leading try scorer for 2015 and is also a favourite with Brisbane supporters as evidenced by the 23-year-old winning the XXXX Player of the Year - voted on by the fans - at the club's presentation night.

The Maroons winger has attracted interest from other clubs but his preference is to stay in Brisbane and to play out his career at the club.

His next contract will be only one step in that direction. The signs are that Oates is likely to re-sign.

"Corey is developing into an iconic Queensland player and Brisbane is a great platform for him to continue to grow and develop his skills," Mimis told NRL.com.

"To that end, Paul White and I are having positive, ongoing negotiations."

Oates is also keen to further his media career in Brisbane and NRL.com understands a contract with a local radio station is also on his horizon.

Lodge and Pangai have both publicly stated that they intend to stay at Brisbane but both have also been targets of other clubs.

Newcastle Knights coach Nathan Brown recently confirmed to Fox Sports that the club tried to sign the pair of them but without success.

NRL.com understands Lodge has received some massive offers, including one of over $900,000. The Broncos are in negotiations with the prop forward's management with the length of his tenure still under discussion.

Due to a management issue, Pangai jnr's deal will not be finalised until November.

Both forwards are close to coach Wayne Bennett and the Bronco coach's future beyond 2019 may play into how long the duo re-sign with Brisbane.

The Broncos are confident that the Bennett factor will not prevent the club from settling on deals with the pair but there is still more to play out before their signatures are secured.

Hasn't Lodge already signed a contract but is waiting for the NRL to approve it? Could he even legally sign elsewhere if that is the case?

The contract isn't registered. He could sign anywhere he wants in the meantime. At the moment, it's just a useless piece of paper.

Isn’t lodge gonna do extra shifts at the clubs bar to pay his legal fees?
