Herbie won back of the year last year in the left centre position and also eases Cobbo into the side from the wing.
This year is Cobbo's first full year in the NRL
In response to the left hand/right hand carry discussion above, wouldn't having Oates on the right wing, and Cobbo on the left wing be the most logical option?
I know Oates has exclusively been a left winger, but I have always wondered what sort of difference having him on the right would make to his game, but also overall for the team. He would be able to use his left hand fend against the cover defence.
Like you guys have already pointed out, Cobbo will probably also be better suited to the left, so why not play him on the left next to Farnworth? If he eventually transitions to centre, he would already be familiar with the left side of the field.

I imagine a lot of this really hinges on getting Walsh back, which is unlikely. If we don't get Walsh back as expected, then who becomes our long term 1? If it is Cobbo, you could put him at centre next year and then use a stop gap again while Mariner gets up to speed and hope Cobbo can then transition to fullback some time next year.

Well I think the argument is you want to get Herbie out of the centres because he doesn't pass.
Herbie is also a right side player, playing left.
Cobbo is a left side centre playing right.
Oates is a left winger playing left winger and Staggs is a right centre playing right centre.
So half our outside backs are playing out of position (sort of)
BroncsFan made the argument about bringing Selwyn in slowly and Herbie being our best back last year, which is extremely fair. Probs why we haven't done it, but to me it seems obvious.

I think there were comments in the off season that Cobbo was playing left wing outside Herbie right up until the last trial match. I believe Pereira was on the right wing and Oates was in the renegades.
In that trial match Pereira completely shat the bed and Oates was reasonably solid... I'm not sure if that changed Kevvie's thoughts but Oates has been on the left since round 1 and has been one of our best each week.
Cobbo on the left with Herbie made sense and looked to be a succession plan if the Broncos were looking to move on from Oates.
Herbie played left wing almost exclusively in ISC... so if those two were on the same side there could've been opportunities for the pair to switch between center and wing throughout the game... whilst also getting Cobbo comfortable with playing on the left.
If Herbie leaves next year they'll have a full preseason to get Cobbo comfortable with left center

No he is not. Big difference to dominate in Mal meninga than Q-cup/NRL squad. Jye Grey has to physically develop heaps as well. Both promising and both will probably be our halves once Reynolds is done but Ezra is by far more valuable and ahead of Jye at this stage.

I wouldn't **** with either edge or fullback for the time being.
Te Maire isn't perfect at fullback but he's solid, he's elusive and he can chime into the backline. Leave him be.
Selwyn is growing in stature every week. Here's one reason he stays on right:
Kotoni is now rated the best centre in the NRL. Not shifting him anywhere.
Corey has scored 6 tries on the left, and he's done it outside a guy who won't pass to him. Leave him there.
Herbie is the only problem child. He can't pass, kick or dummy but he's not dropping balls or leaking tries. We can get around his inadequacies by cutting him out of backline movements. Which is essential. Moving him to another position will only weaken that position and potentially the left edge defence. Leave him be for now.
Capewell and Riki are for a different discussion but only Riki is under fire there, and I think unfairly. But he's easily interchanged.
We don't need to muck around with any of these players until Niu returns. That's going to be interesting.

Niue’s return shouldn’t be interesting. If I was at the Magpies wouldn’t even want him back in the team.

IMO for now, TMM. Hes going to grow and get more confidence. There will be some shockers in there, but hes light years ahead of current options.

I think Te Marie will only get better as the season goes on. He said it himself after his first game back that he'll probably need another 5 to 6 games before he'll feel comfortable.
Look out when he starts to find stamina fitness and re-discovers that wee bit of explosive power and speed he had from a standing start.

I actually think getting Walsh back while unlikely, is theoretically possible if we're clever about it. If the Warriors still want Arthars, we could use releasing him as a sweetener. And I think Lodge is opting out of there as well. So we do have the option of offering up one of our depth/bench/ development props if one of ours was looking for a
opportunity and was willing to go as well, if it came down to it. But i couldn't see the club doing something that extreme unless it was guaranteed to get Walsh over the line.
As for the long term 1, it's too early to call on it. Martin is a handy option to have, as it means we could prioritise trying to get one without going all out on both. Martin played 6 in the 2017 Cowboys GF team, so it's not like he's just a depth option, he does have experience in a finals team. So he could be the player we need at 6.
But if we miss out on Walsh and get Munster, Martin could just as easily retain the 1 jersey without the team losing too much. As much as this won't be popular, none of us here can rule Niu completely out of being in the spine line-up somewhere either. There was a reason the club had him at fullback. So that comes into it as well, depending on how he comes back from injury.
As for Cobbo, if Kevie an co. see him as a fullback long term, our left centre spot is about defence and setting up the winger from what I've seen with Bird, Boyd and Reed in the past. So it may not be the worst place for him. But I'd wait until next pre season to make that switch unless everything implodes during the current season.
