Buzzed Rothfield says we’ve signed Te Maire Martin on a development deal.

wouldn't he be too old/eperienced for a development deal.

from memory he was highly rated before his health issues

*train and trial deal I’d imagine.

Good player but has been our a long time

If he recovers and captures his form this is an incredibly intelligent signing, would love to see him back playing he obviously has just bags and bags of ability. No risk, high reward
If he’s the same player he was pre-“retirement”, I think he is comfortably the 2nd best half at the club, and would suit Reynolds perfectly.

yeah definetly, most importantly i hope he just gets back to 100% with zero risk of any further injury, but if he does, that is absolutely huge for us

Provided he’s grown up off the field

Sort of out of the blue.

There you go - silly me.

I thought Te Maire was close to the most overrated player in the NRL at the Cowboys. The stats back that up for the most part.

2019 - 7 games, 3 tries, 1 try assist, 1 linebreak, 1 linebreak assist
2018 - 23 games, 1 try, 8 try assists, 6 linebreaks, 4 linebreak assists
2017 - 19 games, 8 tries, 3 try assists, 6 linebreaks, 8 linebreak assists

In his defence, he shifted around a lot between Five-Eighth & Fullback in those games, and spent about a quarter of 2018 as a bench utility. Still, I don't see a great deal to be excited about.

I'm not a huge fan of his, but Kevvie seems to want a fair bit of depth in the halves. Arey, Gamble, Kelly, Walters plus Roberts and Te Maire now on train and trials, plus Paix and Mam if needed, and who knows if Staggs is going to play 6 as well.

Worth the risk with the price he’s on. Not a long term option but if he hasn’t dropped off too much over the last 2 years he could potentially be pretty great outside Reynolds.

I just dont particularly rate him tbh. Its a decent deal price wise, but i think it probably shoes Staggs isnt going to be at 6.

I think paix will only be looked at as a 9 with that depth.
Locking in arey, all of those other players are capable of doing a job for 1 game, with surely 1 or 2 to hit a bit of a purple patch at some point throughout the season. I won't like if he changes them for no reason next year like he did this year, that was fair enough to sort out our options but now that we have plenty form and form alone should be the criteria to be picked.
With the depth we have my thinking with form is 1 good game should buy 1 bad game leeway, with OK games neutral.

I think he’s basically on the same level as Kelly, Gamble, and Roberts. They all have different strengths and weaknesses though all average at about a 5-6/10 player.

My only concern is that with all the options that Kev will fall into the trap of chopping and changing all season. Maybe after a preseason they’ll just let Adam chose the halves partner he wants. 🤷‍♂️

Im not upset about Staggs not moving to 6. He’s probably the best centre in the NRL (not including the guys playing fullback in the regular season). I think Mam has also put that option to rest.

I don't really recall what TMM's strengths are though...

For TMM I can recall him being talked up deluxe when he first came on the scene, but I don't recall him being electric fast, agile or having a step, or being some brilliant ball player with cut out passes.

Do recall he had a purple patch when he first went to cowboys, but pretty quickly fell into a support role to Morgan with most of his work coming off the back of others rather than him being the creator.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm in the same boat as @Wolfie on this one.

To me Reynold's partner in the halves needs to be the creative spark off the back of the room he creates. I've got Kelly as being the best placed to do that role so far followed by Gamble... but for us to bring anything next year we really need a fullback to step up.

I want Cobbo to play fullback in ISC next year, but we also need him on the wing in NRL. At the moment he is a beast ball runner, but he needs time in fullback to improve his ball playing.

For Tesi, excluding his defensive deficiencies, I can see glimpses in his game to provide that attacking spark from fullback, but hopefully he has grown into his body and improves his tackle busting.

We need him to be a threat running the ball, because at the moment I think he has a nice short kicking game and can ball play a little bit, but he gets rag dolled in tackles and doesn't seem to have the electric speed or tackle busting to threaten the line. If his running game becomes a threat then he will ask a lot of questions of the defence.

It could just be a time/duration thing with Tesi and his running game though... he's still only 20 and spent the last preseason planning for centre. If he spends all his time this year at fullback and adjusts his body shape to suit, his running game may develop.
