Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2025

How many props do we need?

Haas
Jensen
Carrigan
Willison
Te Kura
Taupau
Baker
Hunt
Semu

We also have Koellner on T&T.

Baker and Semu are both injured and Te Kura is very green. I believe Powell can also play second row. I think he is the kind of player our club has undervalued - the guy that isn't afraid to do the grunt work.

My question is more how much cap can we afford to allocate to prop, given two of them are already on big money?

Train & Trial players yet to get a development or top 30 deal. Thoughts?

Does anyone know what Josiah Karapani's status is?
I liked the look of Powell so would consider him... I think Big Pete mentioned that Philitoga was a highly rated junior coming through??

If so then he might already be on the broncos books.

Just realised we didn't give any time to Trew over these trials... he's got a dev deal so is available round 1, but I believe he's been playing Meninga games.

I think he's super young still, but it could've been nice to see what he might have and whether he's moving to Qcup later this year for some games... maybe his trial days will be next year, but still interesting given he's on a dev deal

The latest I've heard is Black and Leota are in top 30 now, and these are on development. Perham is (probably) out for the season.

DEVELOPMENT (2025)
Bailey Trew: centre, wing
Cameron Bukowski: hooker
Gehamat Shibasaki: centre
Hayze Perham: fullback
Jett Bryce: second row
Va'a Semu: prop

To me it was more that he looked reasonable at second row... which we are in desperate need for... whether it holds up in actual NRL is another question.

It all comes down to Madge and the coaches though... they've seen these guys train, so it will be if they think they can step up to NRL.

The difference with Powell is that he got an NRL game for the Storm last year, so Bellamy thought he was good enough for an NRL game, which says to me he might have something there on top of passing the eye test in the trials.

It's also lock though... we only have 2 in the squad and both are in the starting 17... yet to be known if Kobe can play a full 80 if required as well.

Payne looks to be improving his ball playing and BTK looked like he had some great ball playing, but minutes would be the question.

I'm hoping Madge is doing some upskilling across the squad... we need versatility across the group to fill in if injuries occur (midgame as well as medium to long term) and mitigate the damage they can cause.

The more versatility you have in the squad the less catastrophic injuries become... there's calls that Souths season could be over due to one injury to Murray... that would be a whole season wasted.

Yet look at storm and penrith they were losing players in their spine, but were able to replace them and keep winning games... getting them to the GF.

If Ponga goes down in Newcastle... they're fucked for whichever games he misses.

Even restings... we basically couldn't rest Patty at all last year because he's the ONLY ball playing lock we've got across the whole squad

Yeah I'm just assuming that's a given at this point
If Walsh is out for a game or two, which is almost a certainty, Cobbo to fullback, Mariner/Leota to wing would be pretty reasonable. Hopefully Cobbo and Walsh will earn Origin spots this year, so we'll need to be able to cover fullback and wing for at least those games.

Yeah, I'm not as bullish on Kobe being the saviour back there as everyone else seems to think. He's still only a good fringe NRL player, who's decent enough off the bench, to me.

I would prefer if we can keep Cobbo in one spot for the year... poor bloke has had to move and learn new positions every season, because he's the versatile guy across our backline.

He's played every position of the back 5 at this point... including some games at right centre (epic shutdown of Bradman Best in his first season).

I also don't think Cobbo brings the same type of game that Walsh brings so it would require an entirely new gameplan for the team.

That might be OK now that we've got Bhunt and Reynolds in the team, but it would still be nice to minimise the moving parts across the team to plug holes.

Not saying Seigwalt as a qcup player can come in and be Walsh, but his type of game looks closer to Walsh than Cobbo's.

I might be tempted to see Arthars become our backup fullback this year as well.

His game is also different to Walsh's, but he's more experienced, so might be able to adapt better at moving if needed to move around... we also know that he will be here over origin... whereas Cobbo might be playing

If the fullback gameplan when Walsh is out, is to simply finish off 3v2's on the back of sweep plays, then he might be able to do it with Bhunt and Reynolds setting him up.

Whereas Cobbo's decision making and ball playing on those sweeps seems much lower.

Jesse could be a Edwards lite ball player... Edwards isn't usually asked to do too much... just sit on the right and finish it off when they come to you. He's been doing some off the cuff stuff last year, but is usually pretty basic out there.

Will Kennedy and other guys playing fullback aren't required to do too much across the league... just mostly be safe at the back, organise defence, defuse kicks and then finish off 3v2's.

Those defensive aspects and finishing off shape might be more important to Madge and Barrett when having to play without Reece this year... so whoever can do that the best might be the one elevated to Walsh's deputy

Powell is playing for Bears against Tweed.

Trew is playing Meninga again this year at Bears changing from Souths. Third year of Meninga and last. It's his second year out of school so he's not that young.

Trew played in the Academy side v Wynnum a few weeks ago and scored a try on the right wing from a kick. Played Souths BRL last year too. But no Cup start.

I was a Karapani apologist but after that bombed try, I’m happy to never see him again
