Hey all, John Cartwright is looking at bringing Jock Madden over to Hull with him.
Anyone know what he's like? Ideally we'd get a running 6 to compliment Sezer, but I get the impression Madden isn't that....

He's trained and learned from some of the best. Whether he has picked up all their habits is not clear. He has a decent boot on him and is more a running5/8th but he's not known for having a great turn of speed.
He's brave and seems to stay calm under pressure. He'll go well for you guys.

I think he is perfect for super league.
Had his best game for us against Penrith last year then blew his hammy out late in that game.
He will be a very good pick up.
How many players do we need to cover hooker an halves?
We have Reynolds Mam, Black, Rogers Madden, Hunt, Walters, Paix, Mozer.
If we lose Paix and Madden do we replace them with players in other positions?
What's the ideal coverage for the 3 positions? Walters and Hunt offer flexibility but do we need a certain amount of bodies regardless?

If you want a running 6, then that's exactly what you'd be getting with Madden.
His running game is definitely his strongest attribute, I think he'll go really well in the Super League

He's a very good player, a Mikey Lewis lite. He is pretty quick, decent kicker and is calm under pressure. Its a bit of a shame he's never cracked consistent NRL, to me he looks good enough but has had injuries at the most inopportune times. He'll light up the Super League if he stays healthy and that's probably the biggest concern with him, he's become a bit injury prone.

Well at the moment we have 9-10 across those two spots, which is just ridiculous.
We need 2 hookers every week, if I was looking at squad depth I'd want at least 1 hooker that can play 80mins, if we dont have that then we probably need 2 back up hookers or someone that can play 20-30mins in a pinch... like Havili has been doing for souths.
It's why I liked Smoothy... he can play 80 if needed and can be a back up for the middle / lock rotation.
Halves you probably need 3 decent ones that your confident in, but also a plan if shit hits the fan.
Like Souths plan is play Wighton or Latrell at 6 if needed.
So at minimum I'd say you want 7 across the positions.
Bonus for us is that Billy and Bhunt cover both positions, but I dont think we have an 80min hooker once Smoothy goes.
They can probably all play 80mins, but the quality will drop away.
At the moment players on the books across those positions

Mozer
Madden
Coby
Bukowski
Rogers
So that's still 9 across the positions which is more than enough... we could afford to lose Madden and Rogers and not be affected all that much
